Yangge is an interesting folk dance. The performers dance to the music with handkerchiefs or fans in their hands. It’s the most popular festival performance in many places, especially in the countryside of northern China.

Many people love yangge very much. Most of them are young men and young women. But some are even old ladies. Nearly every village in northern Shaanxi Province has yangge groups. They begin to rehearse (排练) almost a month before the Lunar New Year’s Day. On that day, after eating jiaozi, the yangge group begins paying New Year calls from house to house.

They wish people a happy New Year, and then they do the yangge dance in the street. Some young men often play the drums, and the performers begin to wave red silk bands. The hosts set off firecrackers (鞭炮) to welcome the dancers and invite them to taste their home-made rice wine. The sounds of songs, drums and firecrackers blend, forming a festival atmosphere in the village.

Dear Peter,

My name is Bruce. I saw your information in Sydney Teenager magazine last week, and I would like to be your pen-friend.

Let me tell you a bit about myself. I am 13 years old and I live in Sydney, Australia. You’ve probably heard of the city. It is the one with the large beautiful opera house. Many people think Sydney is the capital city of Australia (I used to think so, too), but the capital city is actually Canberra (堪培拉).

I’m the only child in my family, so I don’t have to share a room with others. It’s great. I plaster (贴满) my room with posters of my favorite band, Coldplay. What is your favorite band?

I go to Sydney Boys Middle School. As you can tell from the name, we only have boy students in our school. I do not mind that there are no girls here because we have many great games like Ozzy rules football. Perhaps you don’t know what that is. It’s like rugby (橄榄球), but it’s far more exciting.

During the holiday, my dad and I like to go camping. He is really good at spotting wildlife, such as snakes, koalas and kangaroos. Christmas is one of the most important festivals here in Australia. But unlike people in many other countries, we usually celebrate Christmas on the beach because it falls in the middle of our summer. What do you do for Christmas?

Please tell me more about yourself and what you like to do when you are not in school.

Write soon.

Yours,

Bruce

The fourth Friday in November is super special, even more exciting than summer holidays or birthdays. Why? Because it’s Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days when you can find amazing deals on things you love. But what is Black Friday, and why is it so much fun?

It began in the US on the Friday after American Thanksgiving, which falls on the fourth Thursday in November. The first people to use “Black Friday” were the Philadelphia (费城) police in the 1960s. On the day large numbers of people traveled there for Christmas shopping as well as an annual Army-Navy football game. The day was “black” because the police couldn’t take a day off after Thanksgiving, and instead had to work extra hard to control the crowds. It was in Philadelphia that stores first began to use this Friday as a good day for shopping, with some trying to call it “Big Friday”. But later the name “Black Friday” was widely used among people. In the end of the 1980s, it became an important shopping day across the US and, in time, around the world!

While in the past, videos would show crowds of people running into shops and fighting for the best prices, a lot of the buying now takes place online. Many companies now even begin their sales long before Black Friday itself, starting as early as the beginning of November, meaning there’s no need to line up as people did before.

Whether in stores or online, enjoy your Black Friday adventure to find great deals and have fun!
