Qian Xuesen was born in Shanghai on December 11th, 1911. He is known as “the father of China’s space program” and “the king of the rocket”.
When he was 24 years old, Qian went to America for further study. After graduation, he worked in America for a few years, where his working conditions were better. In the early 1950s, he heard New China had been founded and decided not to stay in America any longer. He succeeded in coming back to his motherland in 1955 though the American government tried to stop him.
In 1956, Qian Xuesen suggested setting up a special organization, which later became the leading organization for China’s rocket and air travel programs. In June 1964, China successfully created its first medium rocket. Qian also played an important role in developing China’s first man made satellite (卫星). On April 24th, 1970, “Dong fanghong-Ⅰ” was successfully sent into the air.
Zhu Yilin, who was said to be the last student of Qian Xuesen, once said, I learned a lot of professional knowledge as well as the spirit and attitude that a scientist should have from Mr. Qian, especially his deep love for the motherland. Without that, he couldn’t have helped to develop science and technology when New China was badly in need of scientists for its development. Without that, he would not have made the great contributions(贡献)to rocket industry in the late 1950s and early 1960s when conditions in China were too hard.”
Mr. Qian has been dead for few years, but he will live in the memory of Chinese people forever.

At 6:30 every morning, while half of Beijing is still in sleeping dreams in bed or enjoying a delicious breakfast, Wang rushes through her busiest hours in the day. She gets up, gives her face a quick wash, takes a simple breakfast and rushes to the four rubbish dustbins beside the gate of her living area. There she checks the waste left by her neighbors to make sure it is sorted correctly.
“Sorting rubbish will improve the environment for all of us and it only takes a minute,” Wang said. “I want to help my neighbors develop good habits.”
As Wang spoke, an old man came by and threw a plastic bag full of rubbish into the dustbin marked “recyclable”
“Hey, please, there are some orange peels (皮) and fish bones in your bag, so they are supposed to be put into the dustbin marked ‘kitchen waste’,” Wang told him.
Learning the old man was in a hurry, Wang let him go, opened the bag herself, picked out the kitchen waste and threw it in the right dustbin.
Wang has been doing this every day from 7:30 a. m. to 9 a. m. and from 6 p. m. to 8 p. m. since March 10. She says people usually go downstairs and throw out rubbish at this time.

Robert with his family lived on a farm in a small village. They grew corns to make a living. Robert was really interested in machines. He liked to find out how they worked. Robert wanted to go to high school to learn how to help his family. It was his dream.
One year, there was no rain for long. The people didn’t have much food. Robert and his family could have only one meal a day. Sometimes his father went without a meal to leave more food to his family. Although Robert’s parents knew how important the school was and how good it would be for Robert, they didn’t have enough money to send him to high school.
Robert couldn’t go to school. However, he could read books in the library. Robert was at the library one day when he saw a book with windmills (风车) on the cover. He knew that a windmill used wind to make electricity (电). The book gave Robert an idea. There was a lot of wind in his village. He would build a windmill!
Robert used a dictionary to help him understand and follow the diagrams in the book. He went out to look for what he needed and made all the parts himself. Some kids laughed at him because they thought he wouldn’t be successful. But that didn’t stop Robert.
At last, Robert found an old broken bicycle and some other old things he needed. Then he began to make a windmill. Many villagers laughed at him when he tried to put it up. However, the wind caught the blades (叶片). The blades ran faster and faster. Then the bicycle light he attached (链接) to the windmill came on. The laughing became cheering (欢呼). Nikola Tesla is known for many inventions. One is the alternating-current(AC) electricity(交流电). While inventing, Tesla was good at keeping things in mind, because he used picture thinking and imagined every step in his mind before even picking up a pencil. Tesla said he wanted to do it because of his mother, who invented small electrical machines when he was a child.
In his later years, Tesla had many strange habits. He slept only two hours every night and dined at exactly 8:10 p. m. After dinner, he’d often work until 3 a. m. Before bed, Tesla curled(卷曲)each foot 100 times, saying it was good for his brain.
Another scientist encouraged by his mother was Albert Einstein, though what he got from his mother was a love of music. In fact, Einstein often played music on the piano and violin to help him brainstorm.
Einstein’s great works include the most famous E = mc2 and his theory of relativity. However, thanks to his wild hair, he is also well-known for the looks of a “mad scientist” and you can tell that he had some interesting quirks. For example, he had a strong dislike of wearing socks. And Einstein was so withdrawn(内向的)as a boy that he couldn’t speak until he was three.
Sometimes, the smartest of us are also the strangest. That quiet child in the corner may one day be the next Tesla or Einstein.

At the age of eleven, Hawking went to St. Albans School and then went to University of Oxford in 1959, where his father once studied. Hawking wanted to study maths although his father asked him to learn medicine. Since maths was not a choice at that university, he chose to study physics instead. Three years later, he won a very important prize in natural science. In 1963, Hawking suffered from a serious disease and was told that he couldn’t live more than two years. In fact, he lived for another fifty-five years, until he died in March, 2018, but he had to use a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
Hawking was also a famous writer. His first book, A Brief History of Time, came out in 1988 and became an international best seller. He also wrote a children’s book, George and the Big Bang, with his daughter, while he was on a visit to Hong Kong for the first time over 10 years ago. Hawking said the book would be a bit like Harry Potter but without the magic. “It explains the wonderful universe (宇宙),” said Hawking.
In 2014, a movie called The Theory of Everything was shown in cinemas. It was based on (以……为根据) Hawking’s life.
