Much of what we know and believe has been taught to us by others, and we often accept this information without spending much time thinking it over for ourselves.
In today's world, we are being presented with information, ideas and beliefs, but many of them are against each other. Psychology(心理学)tells us that if we hear an idea enough times, or心t comes from someone we respect(尊敬), we will probably believe that idea. In these cases, we base our opinions on the opinions of others. If each of us does not think about this information for ourselves and come to our own conclusions , we will become nothing more than parrots(鹦鹉) quoting the opinions of others.
Examples of spreading fake news without thought can be seen on the Internet. Some people believe whatever they read and then share the story without thinking about the facts. All it takes is one quick click(点击)of the "share" button, and the story travels on its way to influence even more unthinking readers. This can cause serious problems.
If we just stop for a moment to think about what we read and hear, and form our own opinions, we will be more thoughtful, more independent, and more creative people, but few take that time. Yet we need not lose heart over this bad habit. In fact, simply becoming aware (意识到) of it is the first step towards correcting it. Once we become aware that we tend(趋向)to hold opinions and beliefs without thinking them through, we can change that pattern of behavior. Hopefully, we can learn to experience and enjoy the "discomfort of thought" and form our own opinions.

During an earthquake, the shakings make rocks rise suddenly and even crack(断裂) open. Houses fall, people are killed or hurt, and sometimes the whole villages or cities are destroyed.
Can we do something to keep ourselves safe from earthquakes? Scientists have studied earthquakes and make maps that show the “earthquake belts”. In areas in these belts, it’s possible for earthquakes to happen. In these areas we should build strong house to fight against earthquakes.
In the future, scientists will be able to tell when and where an earthquake will be before they happen. They can also tell people what to do and how to do it.

Little was understood about earthquakes before the 20th century. However, they have been responsible for millions of deaths and a huge amount of damage to humans over centuries. Earthquakes usually happen on the edges of large sections of the Earth's plates. These plates slowly move over a long period of time. Sometimes the edges, which are called fault lines. can get stuck, but the plates keep moving. Pressure slowly starts to build up where the-edges are stuck and, once the pressure gets strong enough, the-plates will suddenly move causing an earthquake.
Generally before and after a large earthquake there will be smaller earthquakes. The ones that happen before are called foreshocks. The ones that happen after are called aftershocks. Scientists don't really know if an earthquake is a foreshock until the bigger earthquake occurs.
Shock waves from an earthquake that travel through the ground are called seismic wave*. They are most powerful at the center of the earthquake, but they travel through much of the earth and back to the surface. They move quickly at 20 times the speed of sound.
Scientists use seismic waves to measure how big an earthquake is. They use a device* called seismograph to measure the size of the waves. The size of the wave is called magnitude.
To tell the strength of an earthquake, scientists use a scale* called the Moment Magnitude Scale or MMS(it used to be called the Richter scale). The larger the number on the MMS scale, the larger the earthquake.
You usually won't even notice an earthquake unless it measures at least a 3.5 on the MMS scale. The picture on the right shows some examples of what may happen depending on the scale.

Last term, some firefighters came to our school and talked to us about something important: fire safety!
The firefighters told us all about how fires start and what we can do to stop them. They showed us the cool clothes and hats that firefighters wear, and they even let us try them on! We looked just like real firefighters!
However, the most important thing they wanted us to remember was what we must do in the middle of a fire. They told us to always stay low to the ground and crawl (爬行) to the nearest door. They also showed us how to use a fire extinguisher (灭火器) and call for help.
At the end of the visit, the firefighters gave us a test to see how much we learned. I was so proud of myself because I got all the answers right!
Several weeks later, we had a fire drill (消防演习) at school. The alarm went off, and we had to leave our classroom quickly. At first, I felt a little nervous, but I remembered everything the firefighters taught us. I stayed low to the ground, crawled to the door, and got outside. After the drill, our teacher told us that all the safety rules we learned are there to protect us and that we must take them seriously.
Now, whenever I hear the sound of a fire alarm, instead of being nervous, I feel prepared. To me, fire safety is not just a school lesson for a young student. Instead, it’s a lifelong skill that will always keep me safe.

When your birthday comes, you may have a party(派对)with your friends. Some of them bring gifts for you. Do you know how to give and get gifts in other countries?

Because recovering a stolen identity can be a hard process. Imagine that someone opens a credit card in your name, gets a cell phone number in your name, or buys things using a credit card that has your name on it.
ID thieves can be creative about getting your information. There are some low-tech ways they get it: sometimes they steal rubbish, going through it to find personal information, or they steal mail.
There are high-tech ways, too: ID thieves might put software onto your computer secretly. The software, called badware, let a thief see everything on your computer, and record everything you type on your computer. Unluckily, even if you’re really careful with your personal information, thieves can still get your personal information. Sometimes, they get into computer systems at shops, schools, hospitals or businesses. They look for personal information to use or sell to other thieves.
It’s pretty easy for you and your family to stop a thief stealing your identity. You can start with the low-tech defenses (防御). Be careful with your mail and rubbish. And be sure to take care of your wallet, or your backpack. It’s especially important not to carry your Social Security card with you. Keep it in a safe place at home.
Practice some higher-tech defenses, too: protect your computer by turning on an up-to-date firewall (防火墙). Once you’re online, be careful with your personal information. When you get emails or pop-ups on your computer, don’t respond automatically (自动响应). Stop and think before you click—it could help keep your information private, and keep badware off your computer.
