The pilot whale(座头鲸)is one of the largest sea animals in the world. Some of them can be 7 meters long and 3000 kilos heavy. There are about 4000 pilot whales in the world. Most of them live in the Pacific and the Atlantic. A few of them can be seen in Bohai and other big seas in China.

In September, a tragedy happened on the west coast of Tasmania,

Australia. As many as 380 pilot whales became stranded(搁浅)and died. It may be the largest stranding happened in Australia on record, the BBC reported.

For centuries, the whales stranding happened all over the world. Why do pilot whales do this? Scientists did a lot of studies, but they say the reason about that is often unknown. Instead, they offered some different guesses.

Some scientists say the whales catch small fish for food and get stranded because they are not noticing where they are going. Others think that the earth has a geomagnetic field(地磁场), which makes the whales change their ways of travelling into the wrong place.

There is another guess. Pilot whales travel in large groups. “If one head whale wrongly takes the whole group far away the deep sea, the others will not leave. ” said Shery Gibney, a great scientist from New Zealand. “Some will come in and try to help, they get stranded on the beach, then more will come. ”

Pilot whales can float (漂浮)in the deep water easily although they have a very large body. If they get stranded, their heavy body can slowly kill themselves. More than 90% of all the stranded whales will die, according to the NOAA of the US.

【推荐1】Dolphins (海豚) are very beautiful and very nice animals. There are 17 different kinds of dolphins. Small dolphins, like Maui’s dolphins, are only 1.2 meters long and 40 kilograms. The biggest dolphin, called an Orca, can be 9.5 meters long and 10 tons. It doesn’t matter the size, though. All dolphins can talk. Maybe they cannot talk with words, but they can talk with sounds.

Dolphins like to swim beside each other. They travel in a group. We call a group of fish a “school”. They do not study, but they travel together. Dolphins are mammals (哺乳动物), not fish, but they swim together in a school. Dolphins talk to the other dolphins in the school. They give information and they show their feelings. They tell when they are happy or sad or afraid. They say “Welcome” when a dolphin comes back to the school. They talk when they play.

They make few sounds above water. They come up out of the water because they need to breathe (呼吸) air. They make many more sounds under water. People cannot hear these sounds because the sounds are very, very high. Scientists make tapes of the sounds and study them.

Sometimes people catch dolphins for a large aquarium which is a zoo for fish. People can watch the dolphins in a show there. Dolphins do not like to be away from their school. They feel sad and lonely.

【推荐2】The Mogo Wildlife Park, an Australian zoo, saved all of its animals facing danger from bush fires (林区大火), thanks to a zookeeper, who brought monkeys, pandas, and even a tiger to his home. The Mogo Wildlife Park is located in the South coast. It is just 10 kilometers from Bateman’s Bay, a popular tourist place that has been seriously influenced by the fires, The fires have made thousands of people leave their homes and at least eight people die.

The zoo houses nearly 200 animals, including Sumatran tigers and southern white rhinos. Chad Staples, the director of the zoo, told the Broadcasting Company that zookeepers were well-prepared to protect the animals as bush fires broke out over the New Year’s Eve. “Thanks to the amazing staff here and a plan, no one is hurt, not a single animal,” Sara Ang from the wildlife park told BBC Radio 5 that some of the smaller monkeys and red pandas were moved into Staples’ home. Staples told the ABC that zookeepers felt it was safer to keep larger and more dangerous animals including lions and gorillas in their night enclosures (圈地) where they would feel more comfortable as bush fires burned around them.

Staples told The Times that the team on-site fought against fires at the 65-acre park for several hours. 【推荐3】In many places, people build roads through animals’ habitats (栖息地). All day long, cars and trucks pass by. The animals can’t always stay away from the road. They may need to cross it to get their food and water. The road is dangerous. If a car hits an animal, the animal would be badly hurt or even killed. The people in the car would get hurt, too. Animals need a way to get around their habitat without having to walk across the road. But how?

Some people have thought of a solution (方法). They build wildlife corridors (走廊) that let animals cross roads safely. Some wildlife corridors are bridges that go over roads. People plant trees and grass on these bridges so they look like the natural habitat. Other wildlife corridors are tunnels (隧道) that go under the roads. Animals can look through them and see the habitat on the other side.

Different animals like to use different kinds of corridors. Some animals, such as moose and deer, like open spaces. They like bridge corridors better. Other animals, like black bears, like the tunnel corridors.

Wildlife corridors help animals get around their habitats to find food. They also keep people from getting into dangerous accidents. They are a great way for animals and people to live in the same area safely.
