After all, you probably sing when you are happy.

Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.

Do you know what a “territory” is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims (声称) as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.

If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting (筑巢) season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.

Birds sing loudest in spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs.

You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.

【推荐1】It was a dark evening in 1999. Song Yang, a 19-year-old student, lost his way in west London. This was only his third day in the UK. He saw an old man carrying heavy bags on the side of the road, unable to move. Song helped him home. The old man, named Hans, was born in Switzerland. He lived by the River Thames alone(单独). Hans always said, “China is my home because Song is my family.” In 2013, the 81-year-old died in Zhengzhou and Song held a traditional Chinese funeral(葬礼) for Hans. For more than 4,700 days, both the young and the old had kept their promise of caring for each other.

Hawking was born in England on January 8th,1942. When he was a child,he was interested in science. In 1959,he entered Oxford University to study natural science. However,he got a very serious illness in 1963. After that,he couldn't move or speak. He had to sit in a wheelchair and he could only communicate with others by using a computer.

In the face of these difficulties,Hawking didn't give up. He went on to study at Cambridge University and did research（研究）on space and time. He wrote many great books. The most famous one is A Brief History of Time.
