Do you know your phone number well? Your number has 11 digits (数字). You may sometimes find it hard to remember your number. That is because China has the longest mobile phone numbers in the world. Why is that?
The 11 digits include three parts. Each part has a different meaning. The first three numbers tell you the mobile phone service provider you are using. For example, 135 is for the China Mobile Communication Corporation (中国移动) and 188 is for China Unicom (中国联通). The fourth to the seventh digits tell you where the number is from. And the last four digits are random (随机的).
The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population in the world. We once had 10 numbers. But as our population grew, there were not enough numbers for us to use. So we began to use 11 digits from 1999.
Eleven digits can make tens of billions of mobile phone numbers. That’s enough for each person to have seven or eight phone numbers to use in China. Also, we can use the mobile phone numbers again. Usually, the service provider will use a canceled number again after three to six months. If you call a number that you haven’t called for a long time, you may find its owner has changed.
Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11-digit mobile phone numbers. But their numbers always start with 0. So they cannot make as many numbers as we can. Countries like the United States, Australia and India use phone numbers with 10 digits. Canada’s mobile phone numbers are perhaps the world’s shortest: they use seven digits.

Lions are hunters. They depend on their ability to catch other animals. Lions must be fast in order to catch their prey(猎物). The powerful muscles in their back legs allow them to run at the speed of more than 30 miles per hour. They can also jump a distance of more than 35 feet. The strong muscles in their front legs help them catch their prey.
Snakes also use their muscles for hunting prey and for movement, but their muscles work in very different ways than lion's do. Because snakes do not have any legs, they use their muscles to push against the ground or other objects to move themselves forward. Their muscles also allow them to eat things that seem much too large. For example, a snake may eat an egg that is larger than the width of its body. How does this happen? The snake's strong neck muscles work together to push the egg down the mouth.
The elephant's long nose has a lot of muscles. Scientists believe that the nose alone has more than 100000 muscles! This is because the elephant uses its nose much in the same way that people use their hands and fingers. Even though the nose is large, it can perform surprisingly tasks. For example, an elephant can pick up a small leaf from the ground. The nose can also be a powerful tool. An elephant can use its nose to pick up a tree by its roots or even to lift a baby elephant.
The great muscles of these animals seem pretty unbelievable. But the muscles in your body work exactly the way you need them to. After all, it might be fun to be able to jump a distance of 30 feet, but as a human being, there is just not much need of it.

Is it autumn or fall? The third season of a year has two names, autumn and fall. Both of them were born in Britain. What exactly you should call that season depends on where you are in the world and whom you talk to. In Great Britain, it usually has only one name: autumn. But if you come to the US you’ll find that American people use both fall and autumn when referring to this time of a year.
Why do leaves turn yellow? In autumn, leaves go, from green to orange, red, yellow or brown. A chemical substance (物质) called chlorophyll (叶绿素) plays a role. Chlorophyll helps trees make sugar from sunlight. This feeds the tree and keeps the leaves green. But as autumn comes, the chlorophyll becomes less. The green color goes away, and now we can see the other colors in the leaves.
What is the special food in autumn? In autumn, apples are good for you and there is lots of other anti-inflammatory (抗炎的) food to try as well, such as cabbage, cauliflower (花椰菜), garlic (蒜), peas, and all kinds of lettuce (生菜).
Do some outdoor activities! Autumn is a perfect season, with a comfortable temperature for people to do some outdoor activities. Go hiking up the mountain or biking down the road in the countryside. Just give yourself a break to enjoy nature.

Ant Forest is a feature (功能) in the Alipay mobile payment app. It records users' low-carbon activities—taking a bus to work instead of driving, for example—and gives users “green energy". When the user's green energy gets high enough? Ant Forest and its partners will plant a real tree for that person.
Last month, Ant Forest received the 2019 Champions of the Earth award, the UN's highest environmental honor. It won the award by encouraging people to live greener lifestyles and protect the environment.
By the end of August, 2019, about 500,000,000 people had used Ant Forest since it came out in August 2016. Ant Forest and its partners have planted 122,000,000 trees in China's driest areas, including parts of Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Qinghai and Shanxi. The government of this Asian nation has developed an app called Smart Sheriff that lets parents know about the websites their kids visit or the apps they use. South Korea has required that kids 18 and under install this app, or another one like it, on their smartphones.

Others disagree. Teens complain that the app encroaches(侵犯) on their right to privacy. Some parents feel that they should be the ones in control of their kids’ smartphone use. They argue that children should be taught how to safely use the web instead.

For example, you must say Mr or Mrs when you meet someone for the first time. When you get to know each other better or when they ask you to, you can just use their first names.
One day, we visited some friends and had afternoon tea together. Afternoon tea is not just a drink but a light meal at around 4 pm. We ate sandwiches and a large fruit cake. In England, you usually drink tea with milk. So I tried to drink tea with milk, too.
Fish and chips is traditional food in England. You can buy it and eat it in special fish and chip shops on the high street, or you can take it away and eat it with your fingers! It is delicious.
At the bus stop, you must not push your way onto the bus. You need to stand in a line and wait your turn. Sometimes people are slow to get on a bus.

Two adults are walking by. They hear what the teenagers are saying, but they don’t understand a word. What the teenager said was, “I’m tired of hanging around after school. We do this all the time. Let’s go and get some food.”
This is nothing new. Teenagers always invent new words and phrases. They create words for everyday things, such as words that mean good or parents or bad or good-looking, and so on. Look at these different ways of saying good in recent decades (十年):
1960s-groovy | 1970s-fab | 1980s-wicked | 1990s-sweet | 2000s-tight |
But, of course, the words you use depend on your interests, your friends, the music you listen to and the part of the country you live in. Different groups of teenagers have different likes and dislikes, and so they also have different expressions.
________ Many people think it’s because they don’t want adults to understand, but that probably isn’t true. The real reason is that teenagers want to feel that they’re part of a group that speaks the same language, a language that is different from the one their parents and other adults speak. And also teenagers like to be creative and play with language, so they have fun creating new words.
And what do the parents think about it all? Most of them don’t worry about it. After all, they had their own special words when they were teenagers, too. But some adults complain about “teen talk” and get very annoyed by it. But that’s all part of the fun for the teenagers!

The Silk Road is the name of different roads that long ago connected Europe, Africa and Asia. People reached these different places along these roads. Scientists believe people began to travel the Silk Road about 3,000 years ago. By the time the Chinese silk trade became important in the world, the Silk Road had covered almost 6,500 kilometers. It went from Rome to China, which is from the West to the Far East.

It included people and trading goods from different areas. All these peoples travelled the Silk Road, and they shared goods, stories, languages, and cultures.
In modern times, the old Silk Road routes(路线) are still used, but now they are crossed by trains instead of camels and horses. There is even a Silk Route Museum in Jiuquan in China. That's why I think you should give up your phone. Not forever, just for a week. I'm warned that you are developing some bad habits.
