These days schools don’t allow students to bring mobile phones to schools. Many parents are worried. How can they connect with their kids at school? Well, smart watches may be the answer to their worries. Smart watches are like small computers. They usually tell time and count a person’s steps(步数). Most smart watches connect with smartphones and they let the users make calls, and send and receive messages. Often smart watches have microphones and speakers. Some even have cameras.
Many parents buy smart watches for their children because they are too young to have a mobile phone. They are less worried because they can call their children at any time through smart watches. Also, many smart watches have GPS trackers(追踪器). These trackers allow parents to know where their children are, so they know if everything is OK.
But now some groups in Europe say many smart watches are not as safe as what we think. Some watches allow more than parents to track where the children are. They also allow anyone to send the children a message. People can also control the watches from far away to watch and listen to the children. To be safe, any time a smart watch makes a call or sends a message or GPS information-the information should be processed(数据处理) so no one else can get the information.

When Claire Vlases of Montana was in Grade 7, she learned about plans to modernize her middle school. Claire asked the school board(董事会) to add solar panels(太阳电池板) to the project because, she believed, clean energy would be helpful to a really modern school.
The board liked the idea but said it could offer just $25,000. It was only one-fifth of the cost of the solar panels. So Claire organized a group of kids and grown-ups to try to get the rest(剩余部分). They sold their second-hand books, put on talent shows and asked for donations(捐赠), even going door-to-door for them. One donated more than half the cost! After two years of hard work, the group paid for the solar panels, which now provide one-fourth of the school’s electricity needs—saving thousands of dollars for the neighborhood.
“My favorite part about this project was that one person could start something small and then the project could grow and have a big influence on the community,” Claire said. “There are always going to be hard parts. When there’s a challenge in front of you, you can learn from it and use it as chance to overcome it.”

Do you know your phone number well? Your number has 11 digits (数字). You may sometimes find it hard to remember your number. That is because China has the longest mobile phone numbers in the world. Why is that?
The 11 digits include three parts. Each part has a different meaning. The first three numbers tell you the mobile phone service provider you are using. For example, 135 is for the China Mobile Communication Corporation (中国移动) and 188 is for China Unicom (中国联通). The fourth to the seventh digits tell you where the number is from. And the last four digits are random (随机的).
The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population in the world. We once had 10 numbers. But as our population grew, there were not enough numbers for us to use. So we began to use 11 digits from 1999.
Eleven digits can make tens of billions of mobile phone numbers. That’s enough for each person to have seven or eight phone numbers to use in China. Also, we can use the mobile phone numbers again. Usually, the service provider will use a canceled number again after three to six months. If you call a number that you haven’t called for a long time, you may find its owner has changed.
Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11-digit mobile phone numbers. But their numbers always start with 0. So they cannot make as many numbers as we can. Countries like the United States, Australia and India use phone numbers with 10 digits. Canada’s mobile phone numbers are perhaps the world’s shortest: they use seven digits.
37. What can we learn from the mobile phone number 188-4792--8343? ________
