Weddings (婚礼) create a lot of leftover flowers. To Eleanor Love, that means more chances to collect after-wedding bouquets (花束) and give them to her lonely hospital patients, many of whom don’t often get visitors, let alone expensive flowers.
The flowers are still in good shape, and the patients are overjoyed to have them.
“I broke down and cried,” recalled patient Connie Melzer, who was recovering (康复) from a heart problem at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Medical Center in Richmond when Love walked into her room with a bouquet in early 2020.
“When you’re in hospital for six to eight weeks, it really means a lot,” said Melzer.
Love worked at the VCU Hospital as a medical student. She wanted to help ease the suffering of patients as well as learning to treat them as a student doctor.
“One of the challenges of being a medical student is that it can be very difficult to help.” said Love. “You are there as a leaner, but you don’t have the same knowledge as doctors. How can I at this stage help patients?”
So in 2019, she started The Simple Sunflower Project in Richmond, and so far has delivered (递送) more than 760 bouquets to patients. She brought her schoolmates into her project. People beyond (在……之外) the VCU community who heard about the project also joined. Now Love has more than 200 volunteers on the email list.
For each wedding, Love would organize a team of eight volunteers to help pick up the flowers when the party was over and then delivered them to patients. “It’s so satisfying to see the patients who receive our bouquets and it reminds me why we do what we do,” she said.

Look around our school. Do you think it is beautiful and clean? Sometimes the school isn’t beautiful. Some students drop litter around the school. The litter makes the school dirty. We can see paper, bags or bottles here and there. Those things should be in dustbins. Our club doesn’t want to see a dirty school, so every day, ten members of the club pick litter after school.
The school sports meeting starts next week. It is from Thursday to Friday. Can you not drop litter then? Our club hopes to pick all of the litter. And, can you help us?
We really need your help.

At my old school, I used to help my classmates. It was really fun to help with their studies. I wasn’t really a top student who always got the highest grades, but I could explain to them clearly.
Now, when I’m free, I often volunteer on my town’s main street. Every weekend, other volunteers and I make a lot of dishes to feed everyone who passes by the street. There are always about 400~550 people. The long day makes me tired, but it also brings me great joy. The looks of joy on those people’s faces would make my weary day into a good day.
From my volunteering, I learned that helping others doesn’t only make others happy but makes myself happy too. It creates great memories(回忆). And maybe one day, people once you helped would help you back.

Mengxin beavers are a first-class state-protected animal in China. They are only found along the Ulungur River in Xinjiang. When Chu went there, she was shocked by what she saw. “Many beavers die fighting for a habitat(栖息地). Willow shrubs(灌木柳)are their most important food source, but they were disappearing in the area,” she said. “I decided to do something.”
In 2018, Chu started the “beaver canteen” program and made a plan to plant shrubs for the beavers. It might cost more than 2 million yuan. To raise money, she posted videos on the Internet, showing how beavers build dams and how she saved wild animals. She also livestreamed(直播)to show the beavers eating the shrubs she planted. Through her work, about 400,000 willow shrubs were planted with money from Internet users.
Because of Chu’s efforts, the number of beaver nests(窝)has increased from 162 to 190 over the past four years. Chu said, “We will continue to encourage more people, especially the youth, to take part in nature conservation.”
Now, she is working on a new program called the “beaver ark”. It’s a hospital for injured wild animals. She also runs a “beaver guardian” program. It trains local people to patrol(巡护)along the river.

As one of the best-selling books in history, it has been sold as many as 200 million copies in 253 languages and dialects(方言). Now, around seventy years after the birth of the book, an American director has found a way to make it into a 3D animated film(动画片).
The book tells the story of a pilot, called The Aviator, who crashes into the desert and meets a young prince there. However, in the film, the story starts years after the crash when The Aviator is much older. He has got a new neighbor called The Little Girl, whose mother wants her to get ready to enter the grown-up world. Slowly The Aviator shares his story with The Little Girl by writing it down and sending her a page at a time. The pages are complete with the pictures in the book, speaking about his time in the desert and taking The Little Girl to an amazing world where anything is possible.
China is the first country in the world to see the film in two versions-in Chinese and English. The film shows The Little Girl’s life and tells The Little Prince’s story at the same time in a beautiful way.
Huang Lei, who voices the film together with his 9-year-old daughter, says the film is like a childhood dream, and the dream is lost by most adults in this stressed-out society.
“The most touching part is that every one of us was a good-natured kid like the Little Prince, and it’s a pity that this good characteristic(品质) goes away as time flies,” he says.

There are, of course, advantages to these modern ways of communicating. However, do we ever think about what we are losing? As someone who likes writing and receiving letters, I often feel sad that so few people now give letter writing a fair chance.
While you might call letter writing old-fashioned, I believe we should all write and send letters more often.
To begin with, there’s lots of love in a handwritten letter. This is why texting or calling doesn’t feel as special as letter — it’s more rushed. These days, we want to get things done in the quickest way. To save time, we often use shortened sentences.
Handwritten letters, however, pass much more warmth because we take the time. Writing letters allows us to express to someone how much we care about him in a detailed way.
So when we receive a letter, we feel we are loved, remembered and missed. In fact, the process(过程) of writing a letter can make us feel happy too. When we sit down and put our heart into what we are writing, we allow ourselves to a break from the stress of our lives.
Moreover, while texts come and go, letters can be kept forever. We can always go back and read them again. By keeping a letter, we keep a part of that person and his relationship with us.
Now, pick up your pen! Write to your cousins about your school. Let your friends know how much you miss them. Let’s bring back the art of letter writing.
