When things aren’t going so great, there’s a saying to encourage us: when life gives you lemons, make lemonade (柠檬饮料).
That’s what 15-year-old Zack Francom has been doing in the past nine years. He does that to improve the lives of people in developing countries. They need wheelchairs but don’t have money for them.
It all started in 2010. His school held a fundraiser (募捐会) to raise $86 to buy a wheel-chair for a charity. Although Zack was only 6 years old then, he wanted to keep the fundraising going.
“I thought, ‘What if I couldn’t walk or run or ride my bike? What would that be like?” I wanted to help make life easier for those who couldn’t walk or run and didn’t have money for a wheelchair to help them get around,” he said.
Now hundreds of people line up in April to buy lemonade from Zack’s store. In 2014, he sold a lot of lemonade; raising $5,300. With that money he was able to buy 37 wheelchairs at a cost of $143 each and ship them to places like Guam and Guatemala, where a wheelchair can cost more than a person would make in one year!
Lots of people in poor countries have to pull themselves around with their hands and crawl (爬行) to get around, because wheelchairs are too expensive for them.
“We helped one lady in Guatemala who crawled for 10 miles with her baby on her back,” said Zack’s mom. “What a difference it has made in her life! Stories like this are what keeps Zack going.”
Zack has no plan to slow down any time soon. In fact, he hopes other kids will follow him.

We hear a lot about how we should change our lives to help save our planet. Jim Barnes, 15, from Oxford, talks about what his family does every day to save the planet.
A common UK family produces more than one ton of rubbish a year. Some of this waste takes hundreds of years to decay. We also spend lots of money buying new things to replace the things we throw away.
So to help save the planet and save money, our family has decided to recycle everything. We collect used things, such as paper and bottles, and put them into different bins. After they are treated in the recycling place they can be used again. This will help reduce (减少) a lot of waste. We’re also going to grow our own vegetables and we already keep hens. Soon, we can eat our own eggs for breakfast.
In a year, a family like ours uses about 4,800 kWh (4,800度电) for watching television, taking showers, using the dishwasher and the washing machine, and more. This is a lot. To produce this much energy, a lot of pollution is created. This pollution can cause health problems and global warming.
Because of all this, ▲ . We stopped using the dishwasher. We watch less TV and use low energy light bulbs now. Mom also tries to save energy while cooking.
What’s more, we try to use our car less to cut down on air pollution. My dad organizes a car pool (拼车) with our neighbors and they take turns driving to work. And I ride my bicycle to school. How cool is that?!

Weddings (婚礼) create a lot of leftover flowers. To Eleanor Love, that means more chances to collect after-wedding bouquets (花束) and give them to her lonely hospital patients, many of whom don’t often get visitors, let alone expensive flowers.
The flowers are still in good shape, and the patients are overjoyed to have them.
“I broke down and cried,” recalled patient Connie Melzer, who was recovering (康复) from a heart problem at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Medical Center in Richmond when Love walked into her room with a bouquet in early 2020.
“When you’re in hospital for six to eight weeks, it really means a lot,” said Melzer.
Love worked at the VCU Hospital as a medical student. She wanted to help ease the suffering of patients as well as learning to treat them as a student doctor.
“One of the challenges of being a medical student is that it can be very difficult to help.” said Love. “You are there as a leaner, but you don’t have the same knowledge as doctors. How can I at this stage help patients?”
So in 2019, she started The Simple Sunflower Project in Richmond, and so far has delivered (递送) more than 760 bouquets to patients. She brought her schoolmates into her project. People beyond (在……之外) the VCU community who heard about the project also joined. Now Love has more than 200 volunteers on the email list.
For each wedding, Love would organize a team of eight volunteers to help pick up the flowers when the party was over and then delivered them to patients. “It’s so satisfying to see the patients who receive our bouquets and it reminds me why we do what we do,” she said.
