We hear a lot about how we should change our lives to help save our planet. Jim Barnes, 15, from Oxford, talks about what his family does every day to save the planet.

A common UK family produces more than one ton of rubbish a year. Some of this waste takes hundreds of years to decay. We also spend lots of money buying new things to replace the things we throw away.

So to help save the planet and save money, our family has decided to recycle everything. We collect used things, such as paper and bottles, and put them into different bins. After they are treated in the recycling place they can be used again. This will help reduce (减少) a lot of waste. We’re also going to grow our own vegetables and we already keep hens. Soon, we can eat our own eggs for breakfast.

In a year, a family like ours uses about 4,800 kWh (4,800度电) for watching television, taking showers, using the dishwasher and the washing machine, and more. This is a lot. To produce this much energy, a lot of pollution is created. This pollution can cause health problems and global warming.

Because of all this, . We stopped using the dishwasher. We watch less TV and use low energy light bulbs now. Mom also tries to save energy while cooking.

What’s more, we try to use our car less to cut down on air pollution. My dad organizes a car pool (拼车) with our neighbors and they take turns driving to work. And I ride my bicycle to school. How cool is that?!

If we cut down our forests, a lot of plants and animals will disappear from the world, in a lot of places the new farmland will soon look like the old deserts, for example, crops will not grow there. What's worse, it will not rain very often, and the weather will get very hot.Perhaps the climate of the world will change, which will be dangerous for everyone in the world. That is why we must take care of our forests.

【推荐2】Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost mention recycling. Recycling in the homes is very important. However, having to recycle often means we already have more products than we need. We are just dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way, but it would be much better if we did not bring so many goods home.
The total amount of packaging(外包装) has increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It is 1/3 of a home’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets, food products are packaged twice with plastic and paper. Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of land because of this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Besides, the plastic from the package puts some creatures in danger, especially birds and fish.
Recycling helps, but the recycling itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such waste in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, few of them have the idea that this cannot continue. For example, supermarkets should encourage customers to reuse their plastic bags.
But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have been used to the idea that packaging means excellence while anything unpackaged is of poor condition. This is especially true of food. But this idea has spread to other products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.
There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize just how many unnecessary goods are collected. We need to face the waste of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了德国的氢动力火车以及它的优点,德国将会逐步使用氢动力火车代替柴油火车。

【推荐3】Last Wednesday, five hydrogen-powered(氢动力) trains began to make the 62 mile (100 kilometer) trip between Cuxhaven and Buxtehude in Germany. It’s the world’s first fully hydrogen-powered train line. The new trains are part of a $92.5 million project by LNVG (Regional Transport Society of Lower Saxony).

At present, most trains run on diesel(柴油) power. When diesel is burned, it creates CO2 and other polluting gases (气体). That’s the main reason many countries are trying to find energy choices that pollute less.

Now the LNVG has decided that all the trains on the route will run on hydrogen. The trains, called Coradia iLint trains, are built by the French company, Alstom. LNVG has ordered a total of 14 of the hydrogen-powered trains, which are expected to replace 15 diesel-powered trains by the end of the year. “We will not buy any more diesel trains,” said Carmen Schwable, speaking for LNVG.

Hydrogen is very common in the universe(宇宙). It can be used to create electricity by combining it with oxygen(氧) in a “fuel cell(燃料电池)”. The oxygen comes from the air around the train. The best part is, when a fuel cell creates electricity, it doesn’t create pollution.

The Coradia iLint trains run on electricity created by hydrogen fuel cells. Because the motor is electric, the trains run almost silently. That’s good for people both inside and outside the train.

There’s a hydrogen station on the line to refuel the trains. But since the trains can go about 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) before they need more fuel, they only need to fill up once a day. The trains can go as fast as 90 mph (140 kph)-about the same as the diesel trains they are replacing.

Stefan Schrank, who works for Alstom, believes that Germany could replace up to 3,000 of its diesel trains with hydrogen-powered trains.

1. Many countries are trying to replace diesel-powered trains mainly because diesel-powered trains ________.
A.are only built in FranceB.cause pollution to the earth
C.can easily break downD.won’t be produced anymore
2. According to Paragraph 4, we can learn ________.
A.how much hydrogen is needed when creating energy
B.why hydrogen is very common in the universe
C.what hydrogen is like when creating energy
D.how hydrogen can be used to create energy
3. What do we know about Coradia iLint trains?
A.They run on electricity.B.They run quite slowly.
C.They make much noise.D.They need more fuel.
4. How might Carmen Schwable and Stefan Schrank feel about the future of the hydrogen-powered trains?
A.Unsure.B.Bored.C.Certain.D.Worried.
