Have you wondered what your pets are feeling? When your dog wags (来回摇摆) its tail, does that mean it is happy? A new app called Happy Pets can tell you what’s going on.
The app uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze (分析) the facial expressions of cats and dogs. Then it can tell you what breed (品种) your pet is and how it is feeling. It can show the five most common feelings — happy, angry, neutral, sad and scared.
Researchers at the University of Melbourne in Australia developed the app. The key technology used in the app is facial recognition, a common use of AI. We can unlock our mobile phones or enter train stations with facial recognition readers. But this is the first time that the tech has been used with animals.
The app’s AI was first taught to recognize a picture of an animal. Then, it was taught to recognize the facial features (特征) of cats and dogs. Next came the most important step — teaching it to detect emotions based on certain facial features. For instance, if a dog tightens up its eyes and mouth while changing the position of its ears, this means the dog is scared. To master this skill, the AI program “saw” and “read” thousands of example images.
How accurate are the results? The researchers think they are trustworthy since the app has been tested many times. Interestingly, they have found that cats are harder to read than dogs. In the future, the app might also be able to analyze a pet’s body to make its readings more accurate.

Penguin (企鹅) Swims 5000 Miles Every Year
Joao, 71, lives on an island near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He has retired (退休) but still works as a part-time fisherman. One day, about five years ago, when he was fishing, he found a tiny, sick penguin on the beach near his home. The penguin’s feathers (羽毛) were covered in oil. The poor bird was dying. Joao felt sorry for the sick, little bird, and so he took him back to his home. He cleaned him and fed him fish, and he gave him the name Dindim. The penguin soon became strong and healthy again. After a week or two, Joao went down to the coast and tried to put Dindim back into the water. The penguin didn’t want to go. He stayed with Joao, getting bigger and bigger — beautiful new feathers grew on his back. Eight months passed. Joao was very happy because he was enjoying the company of his new friend. Then suddenly, one day in February Dindim disappeared. Joao was sad to lose him, but hoped that the bird just wanted to return to his penguin family. Four more months passed, Joao was walking sadly home from the beach, when suddenly he heard a familiar (熟悉的) “honking” sound — Dindim was back.
Every year since then, Dindim spends eight months with Joao and then disappears for four months. Where does he go? It is thought that he swims 2500 miles to the coast of Argentina or Chile to start a penguin family and then swims 2500 miles to Joao. That’s 5000 miles a year to be with the man who saved his life.

In October 2009, a wildlife rescue (援助) group found a 4-week-old dying squirrel (松鼠) and took her in and then placed her with Brantley and her family. The Harrisons named the squirrel Bella. The little squirrel, together with three other ones, lived outside of the Harrisons’ home in an outdoor cage. They stayed in the Harrisons’ care until spring.
In April 2010, the Harrisons sent the squirrels back into the wild. The other squirrels soon got used to the wild life. But Bella didn’t. The squirrel wasn’t ready to leave her human family. “Bella usually sits at the front door, waiting for someone to notice her,” Brantley said. Her husband John often brought Bella food, as she was waiting by the door for him. Bella had become a member of the family.
Although the Harrisons had said their goodbyes, Bella had other plans in mind. She refused to leave the family and would not like to go very far into the wild. For eleven years, she has continued to visit them.

Luckily, there’s a new way to do it now. A Dutch group has made a special bag. It has a camera and a two-way microphone. They train (训练) African giant pouched rats (非洲巨颊囊鼠) and wear the bag on their backs, and then the rats can search for people in the rubble with the backpack.
The idea is that the rats can get into small places. When the rat is searching a place with the bag, human rescuers can watch a live feed (现场直播). The live feed lets rescuers see if someone needs help.
Donna Kean is working on the project. She says that rats are perfect (完美的) for the job because they are usually quite interested in new things, and they like to run everywhere. Together with the bag and the training, the rats are very useful for search and rescue.

Now science fiction has become science fact. For the first time, scientists have made a robot that can take a beating and keep on going. Scientists from Cornell University made the robot, which looks like a spider (蜘蛛) with four legs.
Until now, even the most advanced robot was almost certain to break down when it was broken. That is because its computer inside simply doesn’t know how to make the machine work after its shape has changed.
To deal with this problem, the scientists put eight motors (发动机) and two sensors (传感器) that read how the machine is working. They all give signals (信号) to the machine’s software. Using this information, the computer can then work out the machine’s shape at any moment.
The new technology is a big advance in robot-making, scientists say, and it’s far from scary. It may someday help scientists create better man-made (人造的) arms and legs and give new freedom to people who lose them. It might also help scientists understand how people and animals work out their own sense of place in space.
“It has been difficult to design robots that can work well when the environment changes or when it’s damaged,” says Olaf Sporns of Indiana University in the US. “With this work, we are nearer to solving this problem.”

● Spark
Spark is a new type of drones (飞行器) made by a Chinese company (公司) in Shenzhen called DJI. It can help people take photos and videos. Spark might be the smallest drone ever made. When folded, it is as small as a can of cola (可乐罐). The coolest part is that users can control the small drone just by using hand gestures(手势). For example, if you wave (挥动) your hand from left to right, the drone will fly in the same direction. When you want it to land, you just put your hand out. The drone will come to you and land on your hand.
● Social Robot
Robots may not be good communicators. But Jibo, made by US company Jibo Inc, may be different. With a big, round head and round, fat body, Jibo looks like a cartoon character. As soon as you say, "Hey, Jibo." It will giggle(咯咯地笑), dance and turn to face you. When it talks to you, it moves its head and body naturally to communicate with you. Although it has no eyes or mouth, Jibo uses animated icons (生动的表情), such as a smile icon, to show emotions. Right now Jibo can only do some basic things, like taking photos or reading the news to you. But it may learn to do more in the future.

Most people believe that it was invented in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell. He was a 29-year-old Scotsman living in the US. In 2002 the US Congress agreed that Antonio Meucci developed and patented (取得专利) a working telephone in the US in 1871. This was five years earlier than Bell. Meucci was unable to find someone to provide him with the money to finance (筹集资金) his project. His wife was sick and had to stay in bed. Meucci invented his “teletrofono” to talk to her while he worked in his workshop.
There are many types of telephone. A telephone that you can carry around with you is called a mobile phone. These became popular in the late 1980s.

【推荐1】NASA (美国国家航天局) itself was formed in 1958. It discovers new worlds, studies Earth, Mars and all the other things in the space. But not many people outside NASA understand the science of space travel. But the inventions that made space travel possible are used every day in the modern world. One example is clothing. Astronauts’ boots are specially designed to keep their feet warm or cool in extreme temperatures. Ski boots use the same design. People who climb mountains or work in cold places wear special gloves and jackets. These use space technology, too, and so do the special suits that firefighters wear.
Space technology is also seen in sports. The helmets that football players wear use materials that were made for astronauts. Also, the world’s fastest bicycles are designed using NASA technology: the wheels are very light and strong.
Space technology has also been important for health development. These days, doctors can take clear pictures of the inside of patients’ body to see how an illness is developing. This technology was invented to take pictures from space. All over the world, cardiac monitors (心脏监测) are used in hospitals to check that heart is working correctly.
Space technology is more common to be used in our daily lives now. NASA’s work brings out more excellent satellite TV pictures and sounds than before. NASA also improved frozen and dried foods which are favorites with spacemen as well as people on earth.
根据短文,判断正(T) 误(F)1. Space technology is better used in our daily lives than before.
2. Ski boots and Astronauts’ boots are used the same design.
3. The wheels of the world’s fastest bicycles are light and easy-broken.
4. Space technology can make doctors look over patients much more clearly.

The possibilities of 3-D printing seem endless. All the user has to do is to design an object on the computer and choose a material to print in. The printers print in hundreds of different materials including glass, sugar and even skin! When the user presses “print”, the 3-D printer spreads the material layer(层)by layer and like magic the object is produced.
The first 3-D printer was invented in 1986 by an American, Charles Hull. But 3-D printing has only become cheap enough recently for most people to use. Designers now use 3-D printing to create unusual things. The Dutch artist Dirk Vander Kooj prints furniture made from old fridges. And doctors have used 3-D printing to print human body parts! The Telegraph reported in February that scientists from Cornell Medical College even printed a man-made ear.
But like a lot of new technologies, if 3-D printing gets into the wrong hands, it can be dangerous. In 2011 a group of four men in the US used 3-D printing to produce ATM skimmers(提款机盗刷器). These were placed on an ATM and stole over $400,000 from users of the ATM. It is terrible to think that criminals like them might one day use a 3-D printer to print a gun.
But for better or for worse, 3-D printing has been put into use. In a few years, you’ll probably be wondering how you could ever live without your 3-D printer!
1. What is the correct order for people to use a 3-D printer?a. Choose a proper material.
b. Press the print button.
c. The 3-D printer spreads the material.
d. Use a computer to design an object.
A.a-b-c-d | B.d-a-b-c | C.a-c-d-b | D.d-c-b-a |
A.a gun | B.some furniture | C.a man-made ear | D.ATM skimmers |
A.It is useless in our daily life. | B.It is helpful but dangerous. |
C.It is necessary only for our work. | D.It is too expensive for most people. |

When asked a question, ChatGPT uses this training to produce detailed answers that often seem like they were written by a human. You can ask it anything and it will give you answers to not only follow-up questions but also professional questions (although it does sometimes make mistakes). You can also ask it to write text, such as short stories or essays. The technology is so promising (有前途的) that some people believe it will overtake (超过) Google in the near future.
For many years it has been expected that AI will become an important part of our lives, and for just as long there have been concerns (忧虑) of the trouble that AI could cause. In the 20th century, scientists, philosophers and writers sometimes worried that AI would become too powerful. In the short story I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, a giant supercomputer has killed every human on earth except five people it keeps to torture (折磨). And in the 1984 film The Terminator, a powerful AI called Skynet uses time travel to send a robot into the past to try and kill the mother of a brave and strong fighter. On the other hand, some people were optimistic of advanced technologies’ potential (潜力) to build a better world. In the 1960s TV show Lost in Space, a family of humans were helped by a friendly robot named Robby.
Nowadays, there is less concern of an all-powerful AI trying to destroy the world, and we are not expecting friendly robots just yet. That doesn’t mean there is not a lot of excitement and concern being felt towards new technologies like AI, though. ChatGPT is a great example of a modern technology that is causing mixed feelings.
It’s too soon to say what kind of influence ChatGPT will have on our lives. Let’s hope that, if ChatGPT does become bigger and more popular, its effects are mostly positive. So, what do you think? Will ChatGPT be good, bad, or somewhere in between for humankind?
1. Why can ChatGPT produce detailed answers like they are from a human?A.Scientists teach ChatGPT to talk like a human. | B.ChatGPT has looked at over 8 million web pages. |
C.ChatGPT depends on Google’s basic information. | D.Many people answer the question on the Internet. |
