Which arts were Chinese ancient scholars (学者) expected to learn? According to UNESCO, they were calligraphy (书法), painting, chess and the guqin.
The guqin, one of the oldest Chinese traditional musical instruments, could date back to over 3,000 years ago. With longer strings (弦) than many other musical instruments, the guqin can produce rich tones (音调).
Bringing traditional musical instruments to life is a tradition in Wu Wenguang’s family. Wu Wenguang is a 78-year-old inheritor (继承者) of the guqin. He not only perfects his own musical skills but also works hard to keep guqin music alive. Wu said guqin music was often written in simple words. Although some words were given to describe how to use the hands and play the seven strings, there were no instructions on how fast or slow to play it. So even if there were about 3,000 ancient songs for guqin music, different musicians had different understandings, according to Wu.
To keep guqin music alive, Wu and his father Wu Jinglue (1907-1987), who was also good at playing the guqin, re-created more than 100 ancient pieces. Besides ancient guqin songs, Wu has also changed music works from today and put them into his performances to increase the popularity of guqin music.
“More and more young people grow to love guqin playing with a new wave of interest in the nation’s traditional culture,” said Wu Ye, Wu’s daughter, also an inheritor of the guqin.
To attract young people, Wu and other inheritors also organize a series of guqin concerts with different themes.

The hot pot has a long history of about 2, 000 years. The hot pot used to be preferred in winter, but recently it has been appearing on tables all year round.
Apart from (除了) its delicious taste, there are two other important reasons for the Chinese to like the hot pot. The first one is that the hot pot is considered a great way to make new friends. People gather around the pot, chatting, eating, drinking and having fun. The other is that the hot pot is a “healthy meal”. Eating the hot pot can warm the body and improve circulation (血液循环) in winter, and increase perspiration to help cool the body in summer.
There are several kinds of hot pots in China with different soup. Two of the most popular hot pots are Sichuan hot pot and Beijing mutton hot pot.
Sichuan hot pot is famous for its numbing and spicy (又麻又辣的) taste, due to the addition of a special food material—Sichuan pepper—and other spicy things like chili, which makes it different from other hot pots. Beijing mutton hot pot is regarded as the typical of the northern China hot pots. Mutton is its main part, and the soup is made from lamb bones.
When you eat a hot pot in a restaurant, generally, there are two kinds of soup bases spicy and clear. A clear soup base has quite a mild (温和的) taste, which is made from seafood or meat bones. A spicy soup base usually has Sichuan pepper, which is spicy and salty.
If you have a mixed group with some who don’t eat spicy food, there is a special pot with a divider in the middle between the spicy and clear soup, which is called a double-flavor hot pot (鸳鸯锅).

When you are talking to a friend, you sometimes try to change his or her mind ( 想 法 ) . But it is very possible that you find it hard. Here are some tips you can try.
First of all, please don’t change your talk into a quarrel (吵架) at any time. It is better to show the ideas and facts. By showing facts, you show that you are right.
Secondly, don’t say “You’re wrong”. If you think someone is wrong, a better way to point it out is to use “may/might be wrong”, not “you are wrong”. This opens up the door for both of you to talk about your ideas. It shows that you’re open to new ideas.
Thirdly, get the other person to say yes. You may begin talking about the hobbies he or she has. A small talk like this will make it easier for your friend to accept (接受) you and then they will be more open to your ideas. It makes you two trust each other.
And don’t forget to let the other person talk enough. By listening to them talk patiently, you show that you really care about what they think. This will earn respect (赢得尊重) and trust. So when it’s your turn to talk, they’ll listen.
In a word, you should respect others all the time when you don’t agree with each other. And, don’t feel down if your friend isn’t willing to change. A gentleman gets along with others, but doesn’t necessarily ( 必 要 地 ) agree with them, right?

In some areas of the countryside of Chongqing and Yunnan, people can see colorful wall paintings like a flying ship and a dragon. Behind these paintings are two volunteer painters, 26-year-old Liu Zhicheng and 22-year-old, Xu Fengkai. They come from small villages in Yunnan and have a deep love for the countryside. They want people in the countryside to enjoy a colorful life.
In June last year, the two young men spent their holidays in a town called Anju in Chongqing. They noticed some old walls and decided to stay longer to make the walls look better. They painted seven murals(壁画): four on the walls of a factory and three on the walls of villagers’ houses. Each took between two and four days to finish. The villagers liked their paintings a lot. Last September, the pair went to Liu’s hometown in Yongsheng County in Lijiang to paint more murals.
Liu often shares short videos of his murals online. So far, he has over 293,000 fans, and his videos have gotten nearly 3 million likes. He and Xu got many high-paying job offers(工作机会) from all over the country. However, they said no to them. They say that they want to continue to beautify(美化) villages and add a touch of color to cultural life in the countryside.

【推荐3】Steve came to China from England when he was fourteen years old. At his new school, he fell in love with traditional Chinese painting. One day he saw a painting by Mr. Chang, his art teacher. He believed that he could be a good painter with Mr. Chang’s help.
He still remembered clearly that his first homework was to paint a picture called Old and Young. He thought about it for a while and decided to paint his grandpa and his little sister. But Mr. Chang said: “Don’t put any people in your painting.” Steve was confused(困惑的). “What should I do?” Steve asked. “You should decide by yourself.” Mr. Chang has said. Steve went for a walk in the park to get some new ideas. He looked around and thought for what Mr. Chang said, “A good painter needs sharp(敏锐的)eyes and a creative(有创造性的) mind.” Then he got an idea. He painted a huge tree with strong branches(树枝)and a young tree that was growing. His painting satisfied Mr. Chang.
One year after he arrived in China, he won the first prize in an art competition. It’s easier to be successful for those who have sharp eyes and a creative mind.
