The Palace Museum, known as the Forbidden City, was built in the early 15th century and it took 100,000 common people 14 years to finish it. Twenty-four emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties lived in the Forbidden City. In 1925, it was changed into a museum. Since then, the palace has been open to the public.
The Palace Museum is about 960 meters long from north to south and 750 meters wide from west to east. There is a 10-meter-high wall, encircled(环绕) by a 52-meter-wide moat(护城河).
The palace is the largest piece of ancient Chinese architecture(建筑物). So it is under special protection by the Chinese government.

The most famous embroidery styles are Su embroidery from Suzhou, Shu embroidery from Sichuan, Xiang embroidery from Hunan, and Yue embroidery from Guangdong.
Among them, Shu embroidery is the oldest. People sold it to other countries through the South Silk Road. It is known for its smooth needlework (针线活) and beautiful colors. Up till present today, Shu embroidery has formed its own style: smooth and bright. This art form is also deeply influenced by the geographical environment, customs and cultures. Shu embroidery shows the creativity of the Sichuan people for its beautiful designs and great needlework.
Embroidery takes time and patience. It might take as long as a whole day to finish just 10cm of embroidery. By the 1970s, Sichuan had as many as 5,000 embroiderers. But since modern machines can make cheaper embroidery products today, fewer people buy hand-made Shu embroidery products. There are also very few young embroiderers, so the skill is in danger of dying out. To protect the skill, Shu embroidery was added to China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List (非物质文化遗产名录) in 2006.

Jiaozi, also known as Chinese dumplings, is a popular food during holidays in Northern China. It has a long history in China.
Jiaozi is one of the most important foods in Chinese New Year. Since jiaozi is in the shape of old Chinese silver ingots(银锭), it symbolizes wealth(象征着财富). Traditionally, the members of a family get together to make dumplings on New Year’s evenings. They may hide something in one of the dumplings. They think it will bring good luck to the person who finds it.
As the Spring Festival means the start of a new year, people choose to eat jiaozi in the hope of having a good future in the coming new year.

Now, calling someone is an art too. First, give a call to your friend, and then begin the talk by asking them about their life and family. Ask them about their schedules on the day of the party . If they say they are free, you can ask them to the party derectly (直接地). If the friend is not free, then ask him to try to find time for your party.
If you’re going to have a big party, and need to ask lots of people to your party, you must decide how many people you want at your party. Then you can write a list of them and send them beautiful invitation cards, because you may not have so much time to give them a call each . You must send the cards a few days before the party so that they can have enough time to prepaer for it.

Many people use their mobile phones as an alarm clock and more are used to returning messages before sleeping. However. these habits are becoming sleeping problems.
Several years ago, my boss used to stay up working on her mobile phone and got badly ill because of that. Now she always leaves her phone in another room at night. And she encourages friends to do so. “I sent each of my friends the same Christmas gift—an alarm clock so that they could stop using their phones as the alarm clock,” she said.
If your mobile phone wakes you up in the morning, it may also keep you up at night. A study in 2015 showed that people in mobile phone radiation (辐射) mostly had sleeping problems. And according to a Swedish study, more than half of young people feel like there must be phones around them. Most of them feel sorry for not returning messages. So they even have to reply to their friends before sleeping.
So what kind of people prefer to use mobile phones in their bedrooms? A recent study has shown that threequarter of people aged between 18 and 34 prefer to sleep with their phones near them. That number falls off a little in middle age, but only people aged 65 and the older are used to leaving the phone in another room while sleeping.

Look at the picture! Nothing is wrong with your eyes. There is something wrong with the tower. It’s the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is in Pisa, a city in Italy.
In 1173, people in Pisa began to build the tower. They wanted it to be round and tall, taller than any tower in Italy. In 1178, when the tower was just three stories tall, it began to lean. There was a war in Pisa at the time. So construction (建造) on the tower stopped for years. After about 200 years, in 1370, the construction was finished. The tower has eight stories. It is 55.86 meters tall.
But why does it lean? There are different opinions about this. Some people have pointed out that while the tower is very tall and heavy, the ground is made of soft sand and clay. The tower leans because it is sinking (下沉) into the soft ground.
The tower is famous not only because of what it looks like, but also because of a famous experiment. The great scientist Galileo did this experiment around 1590. He dropped two iron balls from the top of the tower—one weighing 8 kg and the other weighing 4 kg. Both balls landed on the ground at the same time. Most people thought the heavier ball would land first.

It’s only good for keeping sheep. The winters are long, cold, and wet. It’s hard to make a living on the Hebrides, but for a visitor, these islands can be very special.
They’re not for everyone, however. Even summer days are cool and often windy. The water is too cold for swimming. There are no forests, and there are only a few trees and green fields. Instead of fields, there are just rocks and small plants. The hills, too, are just piles of rocks. Sometimes the view looks like pictures of the moon.
But there is beauty in this place. From the beach you can often see all the way to the rocky hills. From the hills you can see far out to other islands and the open ocean. The colors, too, are special. Blue is everywhere. It’s in the sky and in the ocean. It is in the tiny flowers that grow on the hills. In the spring there is also green in the hills. In the summer and fall the hills are more purple. Often the air is soft and gray with clouds and rain.
On these islands you can forget about the rest of the world. The evenings are quiet. The restaurants close early, and there isn’t any nightlife. Visitors stay at a guest house or a Bed and Breakfast. This is the best way to learn about life on the islands. The islanders are often friendly, and they like to talk.
If you want to meet islanders, you can also try the pubs(酒吧)or even the shops. People are in no hurry here. They like to chat about the weather or the fishing. There are also some tourist shops, but not many. They sell the usual tourist things. They also sell some beautiful clothes made of wool from the islands. Do not come to the Hebrides for shopping. Come to walk in the clean, cool air. Come for the quiet beauty and for the views.

Hi, Weiwei, How are you? You know I am going to China soon for a two-week holiday. Of course, I really want to see some of the famous places there, like the Great Wall. And I know that there are a lot of other ancient buildings and beautiful places to see. I recently read about the big changes in China over the past few years. The new cities have grown so quickly and the old cities have changed so much, so I am sure there will be a lot to see. ①Can you suggest some places to go so that I can have a perfect holiday? Lots of love, Tina |
Hello Tina, What good news! At last you are coming to visit us here in China. I know you are really interested in animals, so I suggest that we visit Chengdu, a beautiful city in Sichuan Province. We can see pandas in the park near Chengdu. We can also visit Du Fu’s Thatched Cottage (Du Fu Caotang), one of my favourite places there. Du Fu was one of the most famous poets in Chinese history. He lived there for some years. After he died, it became a place for people to remember him. It is a traditional Chinese garden as well as a beautiful and quiet place, excellent for reading and thinking. ②我希望你喜欢我的建议。 Love, Weiwei |
