【推荐2】Embroidery (刺绣) is an important art form in Chinese culture. In the past, people embroidered on bed covers, tablecloths and dresses. Girls would embroider on sachet (香囊). The most famous embroidery styles are Su embroidery from Suzhou, Shu embroidery from Sichuan, Xiang embroidery from Hunan, and Yue embroidery from Guangdong.

Among them, Shu embroidery is the oldest. People sold it to other countries through the South Silk Road. It is known for its smooth needlework (针线活) and beautiful colors. Up till present today, Shu embroidery has formed its own style: smooth and bright. This art form is also deeply influenced by the geographical environment, customs and cultures. Shu embroidery shows the creativity of the Sichuan people for its beautiful designs and great needlework.

Embroidery takes time and patience. It might take as long as a whole day to finish just 10cm of embroidery. By the 1970s, Sichuan had as many as 5,000 embroiderers. But since modern machines can make cheaper embroidery products today, fewer people buy hand-made Shu embroidery products. There are also very few young embroiderers, so the skill is in danger of dying out. To protect the skill, Shu embroidery was added to China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List (非物质文化遗产名录) in 2006.

Jiaozi, also known as Chinese dumplings, is a popular food during holidays in Northern China. It has a long history in China.

Jiaozi is one of the most important foods in Chinese New Year. Since jiaozi is in the shape of old Chinese silver ingots(银锭), it symbolizes wealth(象征着财富). Traditionally, the members of a family get together to make dumplings on New Year’s evenings. They may hide something in one of the dumplings. They think it will bring good luck to the person who finds it.

As the Spring Festival means the start of a new year, people choose to eat jiaozi in the hope of having a good future in the coming new year.

When you have dumplings, you can make different kinds of Chinese jiaozi using different fillings(馅料). There is no rule as to what makes dumpling fillings. They can be anything from vegetables, meat or seafood. Whatever the fillings are, the wrapping(包)skill needs to be exquisite(精美的)to make jiaozi good-looking.
