Cicadas (蝉) are natural part of summer, singing loudly and proudly. They are harmless to humans, but can damage (毁坏) trees. “Cicadas are harmful to cherry trees and sweet osmanthus trees,” said Ruan Wangzhou, chief of the Hangzhou Greening Management Station, which is in charge of the gardens and greenery throughout Zhejiang’s provincial capital.
Take cherry trees for example. Each July and August, the juice in their buds (花蕾) makes them the favorite food and egg-laying places for cicadas. The insects’ laying eggs in the buds can cause the trees to die.
To solve the problem, the station invited people to catch cicadas in a park in Hangzhou this August. Over 50 people showed up, far more than the expected number 20. The station also invited Jin Sucui, a 62-year-old expert from Lishui, Zhejiang, to teach people how to catch cicadas.
“Catching cicadas is actually quite simple,” Jin said. “All you need is a long stick, a piece of sticky paper and a bag to hold the cicadas. Just keep your hands steady (平稳的) and your eyes on the sticky paper.” Jin caught hundreds of cicadas within two hours.
Ruan said he hoped more people could take part in the activity. “Parents can bring their children along to catch cicadas during summer as a way to get in touch with Mother Nature and develop their awareness of protecting the environment,” Ruan added.

A study, published in The Plant Journal, shows that plants don’t like to be touched. That’s because touching changes their genes(基因) and, even worse, can slow their growth. Professor Jim Whelan in Australia gave an explanation. The lightest touch from a human, animal, insect, or even plants touching each other in the wind, leads to a huge gene change in the plant.
In order to test the theory, the scientists did an experiment on plants. They grew a number of plants to the age of four weeks. Then they touched them with a paintbrush every 12 hours over a 36-hour period. They found that as the result of the touch, the mitochondria(线粒体) in the plants had been partly destroyed. The mitochondria are the “power-house” of the cell(细胞). The mitochondria produce energy for the cells in both animals and plants. If this “power-house” is weakened, the plants will lose a large amount of energy that should have supported their growth.
Whelan further explained, “If the touching is repeated, then plant growth is reduced by 30 percent.” Although the touching does have a strong influence on plants, usually the plants can still be alive. Touching changes the plants, but it’s not always a bad change. Continually touching or moving plants will make them grow shorter than other ones. However, in some ways, this change could be helpful. It may help plants fight threats to their health such as insects and bad weather.
The new research findings have led to a deeper understanding of the plants. And the research might help with the growth of plants.

Recycling is a way to reduce the amount of dust. It processes(处理)old and discarded items. These items are then made into new products. The program was successful.
But should governments give rewards for recycling, too? We did a survey with some kids. Some people say no, others say yes.
Yes
Conor Maples, 11: People should be rewarded for recycling. San Francisco rewards recycling. The city has one of the highest recycling rates in the country. Meanwhile, Chicago doesn’t reward recycling. Its recycling rate is very low. Rewards help people recycle. Many cities would be cleaner and have less waste.

Elizabeth Card, 10: Rewards help people recycle. One example is a deposit-return scheme(存款返还方案). Customers can pay a small deposit fee on an item. They later return the item when it is empty. They then get their deposit back. And then the item gets recycled. Countries with deposit-return schemes have a higher rate of recycling.
No
Ruhi Patel, 9: People who recycle already have their reward: A cleaner environment for future generations. Rewards only encourage people to buy more things. They will not be reducing the amount of waste.

Pingwu, about 4,200 meters above the sea level, is famous for being home to a large number of wild pandas. The fourth national survey of pandas in 2015 found that there were 1,864 wild pandas in China, including 335 in Pingwu. As a result, over half of Pingwu’s land area has become part of the Panda National Park, which has a planned area of 22,000 square kilometers across Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. It is among five national parks China named in October, 2021.
Through shutting down mines (煤矿), planting more trees and other measures, protection efforts in the park have not only made pandas less endangered, but also are offering safety and protection for other rare species (珍稀物种). About 87% of the Panda National Park lies in Sichuan. It’s the home of more than 8,000 species of animals and plants.
The province has used special cameras and forest protectors as a closely connected protection system. Thousands of forest protectors have been working year-round on more than 900 routes. Over the past four years, they have met rare animals for about 1,600 times. In Pingwu alone, more than 4,100 species of plants and 1,900 species of animals have benefited from the protection of pandas. For example, the number of takin, a rare animal, has increased by 10% over the past ten years. Meanwhile, the protection of pandas causes the development of human society, too.
