【推荐1】Lunch or Junk?
It’s lunch time at Hall Memorial School in Connecticut, and 10-year-old Haley is making her way through the food line. Many of her friends are pleased with the day’s lunch selections: pizza and French fries and hot dogs. But Haley feels discouraged. “I use four or five napkins just trying to get the grease off the pizza,” she says. “Where are the healthy choices?”
Health experts are asking the same question. They say foods high in fat, salt, and sugar should be banned from school lunch programs. This includes some items you might not suspect (怀疑), like fruit punch, which is loaded with sugar, and macaroni and cheese, which is sky-high in fat and salt. “Children are already having too much junk food,” says Jen Keller, a dietitian at the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine. “It’s important to offer them only healthy items in school.”
It’s not that health experts want to take foods kids like best from them. They just want to help kids avoid many of the health problems that come with eating large quantities of unhealthy food. Today, 15 percent of children ages 6 to 11 are obese, or seriously overweight. That’s up from just 6. 5 percent in the late 1970s. Poor diet and obesity can cause diseases like type-2 diabetes (糖尿病), which can lead to blindness and kidney problems. As of a few years ago, this disease didn’t happen so often to children that it was called “adult onset diabetes.” “Many foods that are offered in cafeterias (自助食堂) are linked to these problems,” Keller says.
Most schools do offer some healthful foods, but experts say that doesn’t solve the problem. “Given a choice, most kids are going to choose junk over something healthy,” says Pat Thorton, a psychologist who studies obesity in children.
Thorton and other experts agree that schools and parents need to educate kids about making good food choices, both in and out of school. For example, few kids understand that many popular candies, chips, and sodas come in containers (容器) that actually have two or even three servings. And kids need to become skeptical about food advertisements they see on TV and in magazines. “Just because Beyonce sells Pepsi doesn’t mean it’s a good product for your body,” Thorton says.
Of course some kids already seem to know all of this. “The junk food is tempting (引诱),” says 10-year-old Tim. “But my parents tell me that if I eat healthy now, I’ll have strong bones when I get older. “

The store was opened on May 17th, 2022. It’s part of the “Know Your Food” program of the UNICEF. The purpose of the program is to make children and young people know more about foods, and help them make healthy choices about their diet.
Instead of real foods, many imitation (仿制) snacks are put on the shelves in the store, including candies, sugary drinks and many packets of latiao. People can take them to the self-service counter (柜台) to see how many calories they have. In addition, the store offers many models and cartoons to help people understand which foods are very good for them and which foods they should eat less often.
At present, obesity (肥胖症) has become a serious problem among children. It is shown that nearly 20% of children between 6 and 17 years of age, and over 10% of children under the age of 6 in China are overweight. Experts also point out that the increasing availability (可用性) of cheap, highly processed foods and drinks can lead to the rapid growth of children who are overweight.
Being overweight is known to have many bad influences. Such a store helps to remind children to care about what they eat. At the same time, similar stores are opened in other cities, such as Weihai in Shandong Province and Enshi in Hubei Province.

②According to a recent study, not being able to smell our food before eating it may cause us to lose weight.
③A team of scientists at the University of California Berkeley, US, came to their conclusion (结论) after studying the result of smell and diet (饮食) on a group of mice. Henry, the lead of the study, said he first believed that mice with no sense of smell didn’t feel like eating as much food as the normal mice and end up eating less and became thinner. However, it was discovered that if the mice were unable to smell their food, they didn’t put on weight.
④To reach this conclusion, they did an experiment (实验). The first group of the mice was in normal condition. But in the second group, they broke some smelling neuron (神经元) of several mice by using virus (病毒), so their ability to smell was “switched off (关掉)”. Both of the two groups were fed the same amounts (数量) of fatty food. At the end of the experiment, those with their smelling ability switched off had not put on weight, while the first group had put on the pounds. The researches also showed that “supersmellers” mice put on the most weight.
⑤That is to say, even if the mice were given the same amount of food, the ones with smelling problems put on less weight. In fact, “Sensory systems (感官系统) play a role in metabolism (新陈代谢). Weight gain (增加)isn’t only about the calories (卡路里) taken in; it also has something to do with how those calories are perceived (识别).” Henry told the news.
⑥If it is true in humans, perhaps we can actually make a kind of medicine that doesn’t change the smell of people but still stops that metabolic circuitry (线路). That will be amazing. In the future, the findings could play a role in solving health problems such as overweight. In the meantime, however, getting plenty of physical exercise and eating the right foods are still important ways to keep our bodies in shape.

The right way to breathe (呼吸) during exercise
Exercising is great for your health—everyone knows this. However, simply exercising isn’t enough. It needs to be done properly.
While exercising, making sure your breathing is correct is very important. Naturally, we breathe through our nose.
Breathing through your nose has its advantages. Your nose hair acts like an air filter (过滤器). Breathing through your nose also warms and moistens (使……湿润) the air. However, when you exercise, you should always make sure that you are taking in enough oxygen (氧气).
However, most people usually take quicker breaths while doing any heavy exercise. This is one of the most common mistakes that people make while exercising.
In fact, while doing exercise like running, one should breathe in a 3:2 ratio (比率). This means that for the first three steps, the person should be inhaling (吸气) deeply. For the next two steps, the person should be exhaling (呼气) fully. In this way you can take in the largest amount of oxygen.
A.Let’s go over the basic points one more time. |
B.You can breathe through your nose while doing lighter exercise like yoga. |
C.Quicker breathing is not a proper way of breathing. |
D.However, do you know the right way to breathe during exercise? |

【推荐1】 Most of us are used to using jet hand dryers (喷射式干手器) in public restrooms. They are surely very convenient—all we need to do is to hold up our hands for a few seconds until they are dry. And more importantly, they’re supposed to be hygienic (卫生的).
However, a new study published in the journal Hospital Infection found that jet hand dryers actually spread more dangerous bacteria (细菌) than paper towels.
In the study, two restrooms in each of three different hospitals in the UK, France and Italy were required to provide both jet air dryers and paper towels for people to use. But on certain days, only either the hand dryer or the paper towel dispenser (自动出纸机) was available to use.
The scientists found that when only the hand dryer was available, the amount of bacteria in the restrooms was 27 times higher than on other days.
According to study leader Mark Wilcox, an expert in medical microbiology at Leeds University, UK, air dryers spread harmful bacteria all over the room. This means that if people use these dryers, they’re more likely to pick up bacteria.
At the same time, however, this raises the question — why the bacteria exists(存在) if people wash their hands after using the restroom.
“The problem starts because some people do not wash their hands properly,” Wilcox told The Telegraph. In other words, poor hand-washing leads to a large amount of bacteria being left on your hands.

Bad breath, or halitosis(口臭), can be a serious problem.
Bad breath is caused by some germs(细菌) that grow in the mouth. When you don’t brush in a right way, germs will leave between your teeth and make your breath smell bad. Certain foods, especially ones like garlic and onions can cause bad breath. Smoking can also make bad breath.
Some people say that mouthwash(漱口水) will make bad breath go away, but it isn’t true. It only stops bad breath for a short time.
Some people also say that if you brush your teeth, you will not have bad breath. But the truth is that most people only brush their teeth for 30 to 45 seconds. It just doesn’t work. To clean all your teeth, you should brush for at least 2 minutes and at least twice a day. Remember to b rush your tongue, too—germs love to stay there.
If you do brush properly, but your bad breath still exists, visit your dentist for cleanings. You may have a medical problem like germ disease.
If you don’t want to have bad breath, make sure you’re taking care of your teeth and month well.

Elephant rides used to be very popular at Angkor Wat(吴哥窟), a famous tourist attraction(观光胜地) in Cambodia(柬埔寨). Millions of international tourists went to ride elephants there each year. However, things began to be different early this year. Tourists were not allowed to ride elephants at Angkor Wat any longer. Why?
Riding elephants is fun, but at the same time, it is cruel. Elephants need to be “broken” in order to be ridden. They often develop health problems. The growing calls for not riding elephants started back in 2016 when news came out that an elephant named Sambo died carrying tourists to Angkor Wat in hot weather. In 2018, after another elephant died from overwork, over 14 000 people started to call for ending this cruel practice.
Finally, the Angkor Elephant Group Committee made a wise decision. “We plan to end the use of elephants to carry tourists in 2022. Visitors can still watch the elephants and take photos of them in our conservation area(保护区).” To make sure the elephants can live in peace, they began sending them from the Angkor area to the nearby forest.
Many locals(当地人) welcomed the change as they believe animals should live happily and freely in nature. “I support the decision because the elephants are working so hard. I feel sorry for them,” said one of them.

But why do people say it in the first place? In Western culture, people think burping is a bit rude (粗鲁的). Burping loudly in public is especially rude. So when we burp, we say “excuse me”.
However, when we sneeze, we don’t say “excuse me”. In fact, it is polite for other people to say “bless you (保佑你)” when you sneeze. You don’t have to say anything yourself. This is partly because sneezing is hard to stop.
However, you can usually stop your burps—or at least try to burp quietly.
In fact, it can be bad for your health to try to “hold in” your sneezes. Just make sure you cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze so you don’t spread (传播) any germs (细菌).

Silver first started working on the notes in 1968, when he was working for technology company 3M. He discovered a kind of weak glue (胶) that didn’t leave behind any residue (残留物) when it was taken off. ★ But he and his partner Art Fry came up with the idea of putting the glue on small pieces of paper to create notes that could be easily moved from one place to another. They borrowed some yellow paper and went to work on their creation. The Post-it Note was finally born in 1974.
However, it wasn’t brought to market until 1977 and didn’t really take off until 1980. Today, it is one of 3M’s best-selling things. The company makes more than 50 million Post-it Notes every year.
