Body image—the way people feel about their appearance—is a big problem for many young people today. According to two different studies, more than half teenage girls in the United States think they should be on diet, and almost one in five teenage boys are worried about their bodies and their weight.
But what’s the cause? Many complain about the media. Turn on the TV, and you’ll likely see beautiful models, handsome actors, and fit sports stars. Open a magazine or newspaper, search the Internet, and it’s unlikely to be any different.
Many young people feel stressed to look like these “perfect” people. But for most, this is just not possible. In the United States, for example, the average woman is 163 centimeters tall and weighs 64 kilograms. The average model is 180 centimeters tall and weighs 53 kilograms.
When people don’t match up to these standards, many may develop low self-esteem. Some stop eating properly in order to lose weight. Others lose so much confidence that they start to run away from classroom activities at school.
Body image problems do not disappear as we get older, either. In the United Kingdom, for example, women over 50 spend more money on cosmetics(化妆品)than any other age group. Older men spend large amounts of money trying to avoid hair loss.
Is there a solution to the problem? A 2013 study in the United Kingdom recommended that body image lessons should be provided in schools. Others believe it’s a problem that all of society needs to face. As self-esteem advocate Meaghan Ramsy says, “we need to start deciding people by what they do, not what they look like.”

With the efforts of China’s government and its people, the rate of forest coverage (森林覆盖率) in China has reached 22.96%, compared to 5.05% forty years ago, according to a recent report from the State Forestry and Grassland Administration(SFGA).
Over the past forty years, China planted billions of trees as part of its fight against expanding(延伸的) deserts, mostly in its north. Each year, people sow seedlings(播种) over an area nearly the size of Ireland, according to Nature.
In 1978, China began a nationwide tree-planting program known as the Three North Shelter belt Forest Program, also known as “the Great Green Wall”. It has helped to plant more than 66 billion trees across 13 provinces in the country’s north to act as windbreaks(防风林), according to China Daily.
Since 2018, SFGA has made more efforts to build a greener country. Its purpose is to grow at least 6.7 million hectares(公项) of forest every year in the next 15 years. Besides planting more trees, China has tried to bring back grasslands. It has also used strict forest protection methods and banned(禁止) all commercial logging(商业伐木) since last August.
The high-speed growth of forest cannot happen without public participation(参与). For example, Ant Forest, an Alipay mobile payment app, plants real trees for users who get “green energy” by taking part in low-carbon(低碳) activities. Since 2016, it has helped to plant about 122 million trees in China’s driest areas. China was praised as “one of the most successful countries worldwide in greening the desert” by United Nations Environment Program Executive Director Erik Solheim.

Why are many students so easy to break down? Parents and schools are a main reason. Parents do almost everything for them in their daily life, while schools care more about their grades instead of developing their personality (个性).
Liu Yue, 13, is from Fujian. His mom hardly criticizes (批评) him and he always feels good about himself. When a teacher criticized him strictly, he felt surprised and sad. He began to doubt his ability.
Students should do something to make themselves mentally (心理上) strong. An expert said, “When you are in trouble, don’t ask for help too quickly. You should try to deal with problems first by yourself. I also advise you to take an active part in sports and social activities. That can make you mentally strong.”
Growing up is not just a happy process. Pains also go along with it. The most important thing is to face the pains bravely and learn from them.
