Many beautiful birds live in the wild. They are our friends. Do you know how birds keep warm in winter? People used to thinktheykeep warm by shaking and using their feathers as our woolen clothes. Few people would think heat might come from inside birds.
This year, researchers at Lund University in Sweden have found that birds’ blood produces more heat in winter, when it is colder than in autumn. The secret is the energy factories of cells, the mitochondria (线粒体). Many animals have no mitochondria in their red blood cells, but birds do.
“In winter, instead of producing more energy, the mitochondria seem to produce more heat.” says Andreas Nord, the study researcher at Lund University.
Then how do the mitochondria work? The researchers examined different birds on two different seasons: early autumn and late winter. The researchers took bloodsamples (样品) from the birds and got the red blood cells. By using a scientific tool, the researchers then were able to know how much oxygen was spent on producing energy, and how much was spent on creating heat. Finally, they also got the amount of mitochondria in each blood sample.
The results are as follows. The blood samples taken in winter had more mitochondria. Besides, the mitochondria worked harder. However, the work was not to produce more energy. The researchers had no idea that the birds could change their blood as a heating system in this way, so they were surprised.
The birds’ bloods produce more heat in winter! Why? Is cold weather the main reason? The researchers will do more study to find it. Among other things, they will also study whether the food that the birds eat in winter affects the mitochondria.

We all know that animals are better at some things and we can usually explain (解释) why animals can do them better than us. One of the skills which many animals have is homing instinct (本能). These animals such as pigeons, bees, salmons, frogs and cats can find their way home, sometimes making trips of hundreds of kilometers back home. In our daily life, we can make use of an animal’s homing instinct. Pigeons, for examples have been used to carry messages or letters in times of war. Nowadays some people join in the Pigeon Association (协会) with the pigeons they have trained because they look on pigeon racing as a hobby.
There are many interesting stories of the homing instinct at work. In the USA a cat travelled (旅行) 1, 360 kilometers back to its old home after the owners moved, taking nearly a year over the trip. When we lose our kitten, we usually find her again near the house where she was born. We have a pond (水塘) in the garden where the frogs come back every year. I even heard a dog which was injured (受伤) by a car managed (设法) to take itself to the vet (兽医)! There are other wonderful stories about the homing instinct. But how do these animals find their way home? They don’t have satellite navigation (导航) with them, they can’t read maps and, as far as we know, they can’t ask each other for directions. It seems (似乎) that some animals, such as salmons, use their sense of smell to take them back to the place where they were born. Other animals such as birds and bees may use the sun, the stars and the moon to help them find their way. There is a theory (理论) that some animals have magnetic cells (磁细胞) in their brains (大脑) which help them to find their way. As far as cats are concerned, nobody really knows how their homing instinct works and I am sure cats are never going to give away their secrets (秘密).

You don't have enough room. Turtles need a lot of room to live happily. But this doesn't mean you should let them play freely across your house.
You can't give your turtle enough food. Most turtles eat both meat and plants. Whatever you do, don't think you can feed your pet the only food from a pet store, which is a death sentence(死刑).
If you own a dog or a cat, don't risk buying the turtle unless you can keep them 100% separate(分开的)! One day, my dog ate a box turtle and about a month later the dog died. I've read that many box turtles carry toxins(毒素) in their bodies.
You can't offer right temperature. Once, I bought a turtle that was not put into a box. It died a few days later. In fact, the box can give it a good temperature.
You want an expensive pet for a status(身份) symbol. This may be the worst reason to buy a turtle. It means your heart is not on it, and you will not be taking all the steps necessary to care for the pet.
You will find different information in some books. You need to read more books to begin to understand the high level of care needed.
1. The reason why people should separate a dog from a turtle is that ________.

A.Putting turtles in a fit-sized box. |
B.Putting turtles and cats in the same box. |
C.Letting turtles play freely across the house. |
D.Buying an expensive turtle for a status symbol. |

What has happened? These are just the types of problems a solar storm (太阳风暴) might cause.
You may not think of storms as putting our society in danger. But today, a solar storm is as serious as other bad events, such as earthquakes.
A solar storm is caused by solar flares (太阳耀斑) large explosions (爆炸) near the sun that can give off lots of energy. The strong energy can stop the satellite systems (卫星系统) that control our computers, telecom networks and so on. These storms can even cause the power to go out for weeks or months.
In the past few months, scientists have recorded some of the strongest sun flares in years. The most recent one happened around Valentine’s Day, 2011. It caused radio and satellite signals to go down in some northern cities in China.
“Solar flare activity is going to be much worse than what we’ve seen in the past. We’re not talking about a few cities losing power, it could be half of the country, maybe more. ”SolarStormWarning.com, a US website about space weather, warned. Scientists say that little can be done to predict such a storm.
Governments around the world are trying to work together before the next storm, although they are not sure when that may happen.

Next time, when you get stuck(堵塞) behind a slow driver, look at the colour of his car. It will probably be green. American researchers have found that green cars are chosen by stubborn(固执的) drivers who dislike to get out of the way for anybody. They also complain about the way others drive.
The study also shows that bright red cars are usually driven by outgoing people who hate being overtaken(赶超). And, it is said that yellow cars are always in a hurry. Drivers of yellow cars will not wait when they get stuck. They will turn off the road and try to find another way.
Blue is the colour chosen by the relaxed drivers. It’s hardly possible for them to get angry with other drivers and they will almost certainly stop before the red light.
Black was the only colour available when cars were first sold. Many people remember that Henry Ford, the producer of the first cars, once said “Any colour—so long as (只要)it’s black” when someone asked about what colour car he could have. Now black has become a popular colour in some countries.

When you think of mushrooms, the image that comes to your mind is probably the delicious food in cream soup and pizza. You are not alone. Most of us think that mushrooms are just a kind of nutritious food. In fact, mycelium, the bottom part of mushrooms, is not used in our dishes but used to make handbags or build houses.
Mycelium, a newly developed material, has become more and more important in industry since a company called Ecovative Design produced mycelium bags in 2007. People are trying to make more mycelium-based products because mycelium grows fast and doesn’t take up farming land. Besides, it has very low environment footprint. It can even break down waste. It’s also useful for creating new materials. For example, mycelium can reuse waste to create packaging materials by weaving its network through the waste.
Mycelium has already been put into use in many parts of daily life. In the project “The Growing Pavillion”, scientists from the Netherlands used mycelium as one of the materials to build a house. This material can keep the house cool. Another project is “Myceli-yum”. It produces mycelium-based meat which looks nearly 100% like real meat! Producing the meat uses much less energy than producing common meat. Its high nutrition and low cholesterol make it a popular choice for people who want to lose weight. Max Justice, an expert in space, uses mycelium as one of the most important materials for a new satellite. He hopes when the satellite finishes its work, it can break down itself instead of becoming space junk.
However, mycelium has its limits. Buildings made from mycelium are easy to get wet inside, as the material itself isn’t resistant to water. Compared with common houses, mycelium-based houses are not strong enough against natural disasters like earthquakes.
Scientists are working hard to improve the quality of mycelium and experimenting with new uses of it. So keep an eye out, because over the next few years, you’re likely to find more mycelium-based products all around you.

With low temperatures and a lack of food, winter is a hard season for animals. Many animals enter hibernation, a period of going into a state of inactivity, to get through it.
While hibernating, animals hide away from their enemies. Their metabolism (新陈代谢) will slow to less than a quarter of its normal rate. This cools the creature’s body and slows its heartbeat to just a few times per minute, for up to months at a time.
But why don’t humans hibernate? Human hibernation doesn’t exist for many reasons. Our body is not designed for hibernation. Our fathers were tropical (热带的) animals with no history of hibernating: Humans have only moved to temperate and subarctic latitudes (温带和靠近北极地区) in the last hundred thousand years or so. That’s not quite long enough to develop our metabolism into what we would need to be able to hibernate, according to the BBC Science Focus Magazine.
For example, waste management is a huge challenge for human hibernation. Animals that hibernate are able to essentially stop their urination (排尿) and defecation (排便) during hibernation. Unfortunately, humans can’t do this.
There are other challenges. Body temperatures below 2.8 ℃ lead to throw the human digestive tract (消化道) into disorder and may cause pain. Cold Temperatures can also reduce or even stop the immune system, the complex operation within our bodies that keeps us healthy and disease-free. As a result, it’s much easier for people to be ill, according to Smithsonian Magazine.
In fact, humans don’t need to sleep through winter. We have discovered fire, clothes, shelter, hunting and agriculture, all of which are much more effective ways of surviving the cold.
Could humans hibernate in the future? For long-distance space travel, it’s likely. A journey to Mars would take around months using current technology. If we hope to visit another star system, even if we could travel at the speed of light, the journey would take years. Being able to hibernate would make such distances considerably less boring for the astronauts and save important resources, according to University of Oxford in the UK.
NASA is treating this question seriously. Beginning in 2014, the agency funded research on long-term hibernation as a way to make long-term space travel easier, according to The Atlantic magazine.

Scientists, however, continue to discover that bilingualism, the ability to speak two languages fluently, has more benefits than many realize.
First, it’s good for a child’s brain. Learning a second language improves their academic achievements. Many studies have shown that children who learn a foreign language get better grades at school. Bilingual children also show a better ability in their native language. Their grammar, vocabulary and spelling skills are stronger than those of single-language speakers. Children who learn a second language become expert problem-solvers and creative thinkers. That’s because their brains are constantly working to sort out which language to speak and when. Studies further show that bilingual teens are better at multitasking.
Multilingual parents understand the benefits of learning more than one language. Ben Mazor of Montreal speaks English, French and Hebrew. He says, “Kids’ brains are like a sponge. They absorb everything. It comes to them so easily while they’re young. So why not give them the chance to learn another language?”
A number of studies show that _______. Scottish researchers did a study using data from 835 native English speakers, who took an IQ test at the age of 11. They were tested again in their 70s. Researchers then compared the tests. Those who spoke two or more languages had obviously better cognitive abilities (认知能力). Dr. Thomas Baka, co-author of the study, concluded, “Our results suggest a protective effect of bilingualism against age-related cognitive weakening.”
So, who would refuse the benefits of learning a second language?
