The View Outside My Window
From the window of my room, I could see a tall hibiscus. In spring, when green leaves were half hidden by mist, the tree looked very pleasant dotted with red flowers. I gradually regarded it as my best friend.
However, when I opened the window one morning, to my surprise, there were almost no leaves or flowers left on the hibiscus(木槿) because of the strong wind the night before. I could not help feeling sad. I thought to myself that life never runs well, for there are so many ups and downs, twists (薄雾)and turns. Just at that time, some of my good friends moved to other cities. Isn’t it similar to the tree shedding(脱落) its flowers in the wind?
I nearly forgot this as time went by. One day after I came home from the countryside, I found the room stuffy, so I opened the window. Something outside caught my eye. A plum(李子) tree with all red flowers shone beautifully in the sunset. The surprising discovery filled me with pleasure. I wondered why I couldn’t feel the strong life over the fallen flowers when I was sorry for the hibiscus.
Standing by the window, lost in thought for a long time, I realized that nothing in the world is unchanged. As long as you keep enjoying the sun, each new morning will be beautiful and the world will always fill with new hopes.

The young people thought the fisherman was silly. How could he catch fish in such big waves (波浪)? It was wishful thinking. They thought the old man would leave in a few days, but a month later, the old man was still fishing in the rapid river.
One day, one of the young men asked the fisherman, “It’s impossible to catch fish in these rapid waters. Why are you still here?” the fisherman said nothing, but picked up his basket and put it upside down. Suddenly a number of fish fell off the basket. These fish that were jumping up and down on the ground were so big and fat.
The young man was very surprised. Why did the fisherman catch such big fish in such a turbulent (湍急的) water?
The fisherman smiled and said, “The low oxygen (氧气) in the lake is enough for small fish. But these big fish need to have more oxygen in water. They can only go somewhere with big waves. “The bigger the waves, the more oxygen in the water, and the more big fish.” Again the fisherman said, “Many people think that the places with big waves are not right for fish to live, so they choose to fish in a quiet deep lake. But they are just wrong. Strong winds and waves seem to be the suffering (折磨) for fish, but these sufferings are the natural oxygen feeder for fish. Only through these hardships can fish grow well.”

Ilan, a food shop owner, said that he was refusing to take money today because it was Buy Nothing Day. To increase awareness(意识) of the strange over spending nature of our society, Ilan suggested a trade for food today. He simply asked that you offer something of equal personal value for the meal you received.
At first I was really uncomfortable, wondering if it would be fair to exchange a yet to be determined “I Owe You” (IOU) for food? What could I give him of equal value? After all, his food is the best in the town!
We ended up writing our IOU’s with promises of a book, some paintings and the offer of work in a variety of ways if he needs it.
I think the idea isn’t that the trade is “equal” so much as the importance of the kind of transaction. We put thought into our offer and we had an even greater understanding for the meals we ate.
We don’t buy a lot, especially at this upcoming time of year. We don’t give gifts at all in fact. The holiday time is spent enjoying each other’s company and doing things together with family and friends. This is what seems most sensible.
Ilan is a good person. We are all lucky to have someone like this in our community.

At the beginning, the vegetables and the tree couldn’t get on well with each other. The vegetables disliked the tree because they thought the tree didn’t leave them enough light by covering them with its thick leaves, while the tree thought that the vegetables drank nearly all the water before it could reach him.
The situation became worse and worse. One day, the vegetables decided to use up all the water in the ground so that the tree would dry up. The tree fought back by refusing to offer the vegetables shade. Soon they both began to become weaker and weaker under the hot sun.
Neither of them expected that the gardener would stop watering his vegetable field. When the gardener did that, the tree and the vegetables really felt how thirsty they were. But there seemed to be no way to solve the problem. Then a small pumpkin(南瓜)decided to do something to change the situation. The small pumpkin did what he could to grow though there was little water and it was too hot.

After dinner, Dad would often ask me to sing. He always said I sang I Will Always Love You much better than Whitney Houston!
At every school concert he cheered me on. The look of pride on his face made me happy.
My life was full of concerts, singing lessons and laughter. Though my mum and brothers helped me, they did not share our love for music.

In my first literature (文学) class, Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said, “Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to do it.”
She looked at me through her glasses, “You are not different from your classmates, young man.”
I tried, but I didn’t finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.
In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn’t get much education. But Louis didn’t give up. Instead, he made a great invention and invented a reading system of raised dots (凸起的点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.
Wasn’t I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students? Thinking about this, I started to write smoothly. I completed the task within 40 minutes. In fact, I was not different from others. I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up?
I didn’t expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs. Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day—with an “A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words: “See what you can do when you keep trying.”

The first animal I brought home was a pigeon (鸽子). I found it while walking to school. It was in the street and his wing was broken. I hid it in the woods and when I went home, it was still there and I decided to bring it home. My father made a box for it and I fed it bread and water every day. The next animal I found was a black dog, and she was about to have puppies. My father found the dog tied outside of our house and decided to take it in. The dog was very delighted and you couldn’t imagine how terrible this dog was before. We kept him in a box. A few days later, the dog had seven puppies. No one wanted them, so I had them too. The animals grew to be large. Finally, we had dogs, cats, birds and rabbits.
As time went by, my mum felt better. To everyone’s joy, she could come back home. At that time, we had at least twenty animals in our house, but my mum couldn’t stand (忍受) their smell. She wanted them to go. In order to help my mum stay healthy, we had to let them go. One of the animals, a German shepherd (牧羊犬), was given away to a family with three boys. They were our neighbors, so I visited it whenever I could. The dog remembered me and every time he was happy to see me. Animals are our friends, and I will try to help them whenever I can.

“Happy birthday,” Dad said. I watched him leave, carrying his briefcase (公文包). I played with my neighbor Jacob for a while, and then Jacob said, “Let’s take a walk outside.” We passed a woman selling apples. I gave her my dime and bought two apples for Jacob and me. After a while, I saw Dad selling apples. Suddenly, I couldn’t move. I wished so much some-one would buy an apple from him. But nobody did. I realized how he had earned my birthday dime and thought I shouldn’t have spent it. I pretended not to see Dad and walked past him.
When Dad came home, he gave Mom a bag of apples and said. “I bought the apples from an unemployed man.” “Dad,” I said, “That man is not unemployed. Selling apples is a job.” It was a difficult time for my Dad. I realized how important it was for him to keep his secret.
That night Dad asked me to walk with him. We walked quietly and tears were rolling down his cheeks. “I won’t tell Mom,” I said. Then Dad didn’t say anything and I didn’t, either.
Though I didn’t get what I wanted on this birthday, I got the best gift in the world.
