According to a new study, good friends are actually the next closest thing to family in genes(基因).
U. S. researchers have found that we are more genetically similar to our friends than to any stranger. The study suggested that genes may influence how we choose our friends.
The study looked at the gene information of nearly 2,000 people, who were chosen from a small U.S. town as part of a larger heart study. The study showed that friends share about 0.1 percent more DNA than strangers do.
Besides providing DNA information, participants(参与者)in the study were also asked who their closest friends were. Because all of the participants came from such a small community, it made this group suitable for such studies. It has also led to argument. Friendships in small communities are more probably genetically connected, because such communities usually have fewer kinds of genes.
“I wonder whether the ways used in the study can fully explain the known causes which drive friendships,” said Oxford’s Dr. Rory Bowden.
There was one interesting finding from the study. Some of the genes that friends are most likely to have in common are about smell. “You may really love the smell of coffee. And you’re drawn to a place where other people have been drawn because they love the smell of coffee too,” Fowler explained. “And so that might be the possible place for you to make friends.”

While we were writing the invitations, my mom came in and asked, “Nancy, what about inviting John?” John had been in our class for only a few months, but he was already getting better grades in math than anyone else in our class. “Mom, he wears the same pants to school every day. How could he even afford a costurne?” Mom said nothing.
The next day, mom gave me an envelope(信封) with a shopping card in it. “I thought it would be nice for you to give this to John.” Mom said. But how? We didn’t want to make John embarrassed. We discussed it for a long time. Finally, Betty and I had a good idea.
On the day of our party, John arrived, in an old sheet(床单),but still in the same brown pants as usual. Before eating the birthday cake, Betty said in a loud voice, “Now it’s time for the great prize game.” It was a math game. The Chang’e 5 lunar probe plans to return with samples (样品) of the moon. The whole mission (任务) will last about 23 days, according to the China National Space Administration. If this mission is successful, Chang’e 5 will be the first lunar sample-return spacecraft since 1976, when the former Soviet Union’s unmanned Luna 24 brought 170.1 grams of lunar samples back.
As one of the most difficult missions, the Chang’e 5 mission aims to bring back a larger sample and explore a new area of the moon.
“The three unmanned lunar probes of the former Soviet Union—Lunar 16, Lunar 20 and Lunar 24—carried out three lunar samplings and return missions, and the lunar soil samples brought back were only about 330 grams, while Chang’e 5 plans to bring back 2 kilograms of lunar samples,” Pang Zhihao, a space activity researcher and author in Beijing, told Science and Technology Daily. The great increase in sample weight can play a key role in Chang’e 5’s lunar orbit unmanned docking program (月球轨道无人对接计划). With the program, the ascender (上升器) only requires a small amount of fuel (燃料), so even a heavier sampling will not influence the normal return of the spacecraft.
The best part of the journey is Chang’e 5’s lunar landing site—the northwest part of Oceanus Procellarum, also known as the Ocean of Storms—on the near side of the moon, where no probes have visited before.

A.The ascender can normally return to the earth with a little fuel. |
B.The ascender doesn’t need to bring back lunar samples any more. |
C.The ascender is only able to carry lunar samples that are not very heavy. |
D.The ascender no longer needs fuel to be back to the earth. |
A.Upset but romantic. | B.Scientific and informative. |
C.Proud but unclear. | D.Doubtful and disappointed. |

When a second child arrives, parents are more relaxed. The second child is allowed to be more independent. But he also has to compete with the first—born for the parents’ attention and love. These children often choose different sports and hobbies to show independence.
The youngest child is the happiest. He has fewer responsibilities and more freedom. These children do not feel pressure to do well at school and work, but have to be creative to get their family’s attention.

This is the fifth rover that NASA has sent to Mars and it is full of firsts. It will be the first rover to search for signs of ancient life. A helicopter will fly on the planet for the first time as well. The rover is also better at solving problems on its own than previous rovers.
Landing a spacecraft on Mars isn’t easy. It had to go through the “seven minutes of terror”(惊险七分钟) all by itself. Since it takes 11 minutes for a radio signal to travel from Earth to Mars, NASA couldn’t control the craft during the process.
The spacecraft hit the top of the Martian atmosphere(大气层) moving at 12,000 miles per hour and had to slow down to 1.7 miles per hour within seven minutes before landing. At the same time, the surface of the craft is heated up to about 1,300 ℃. This high temperature could destroy the rover! But since the craft’s heat shield(抗热涂层) was able to take in most of this heat. Perseverance itself only reached room temperature.
The craft then used a parachute(降落伞) and a sky crane(空中吊车) to slow itself down for its final landing on Mars. A video of the landing was shared online later, at lowing people all over the world to see the amazing moment for themselves. The rover even recorded he sound of the wind on Mars for the first time.
