Is there something in your community (社区) that could be changed? Is there a person in your neighborhood who needs help? If you’re hoping for someone to make a difference, that someone could be you!
Volunteering your time is a great way to make a difference in your community. And you’ll feel good about doing something that helps people or improves the places around you.
This past summer, my friends and I noticed how messy our neighborhood park was. We wanted it to be different. We worked without parents and teachers to clean up the park. We had a great time making the park even better than before, and now the whole neighborhood is able to share and enjoy it again.
Maybe cleaning up a park isn’t your choice, though. It doesn’t matter! You can turn anything that matters to you into a volunteer project. You can volunteer to do what you love to do. For example, you could help at an old people’s center, simply by talking or playing games with them to make their days better. If you’re great at math or English. You could volunteer to be a homework helper at your school.
You see, there is something for everyone. Whatever you do as a volunteer, your time will be enjoyed and that always feels good. Kids everywhere are making a difference by volunteering. You can make it, too!

Her family is quite small and kind of poor so there wouldn't be any birthday visitors. I wanted to send her a card and maybe a small gift to make her happy.
I told some of my friends I would like to have a birthday party for the girl. I asked them for help. Then I bought some small presents, a cake and something else.
When the day came, my friends and I went to her house. When she got home after school, we gave the presents to her and wished her a happy birthday.

At the same time, a boy, in old and small clothes, was looking at some video games. He, too, had money in his hand, but it looked no more than five dollars. Each time he picked up one of the video games and looked at his father, he shook his head.
The little girl had chosen her doll, a very beautiful one. However, she noticed the boy and his father. She saw the boy give up a video game with disappointment and walk to another corner of the store.
The little girl put her doll back to the shelf and ran over to the video game. After she talked to her father, she paid for the video game and whispered to the shop assistant. So the boy got the video game which he wanted for free — he was told it was a prize from the store. He smiled happily, although it was hard to believe it. The girl saw all this happen. She smiled, too.
When I walked out of the store to my car. I heard the father ask his daughter why she had done that. I would never forget their short talk.
“Daddy, didn’t Grandma want me to buy something that would make me happy?” He said, “Of course.”
“Well, I just did!” With that, the little girl ran to their car happily.

Logan was wearing noise canceling head-phones (降噪耳机) just before the crash. He said he heard a couple of thumps (重击声) and looked up just in time to see the helicopter falling straight to him. He hardly had time to think before a fire broke out. As he tried to make his way out, he heard the pilot Cori Johnson shouting for help.
“I heard him shouting.” Logan said. “I looked around and saw him upside down hanging. Fire was everywhere. When I was in the moment I really wasn’t thinking. I was just doing.”
Logan reached Cori through the fire and brought him away from the fire. Once Cori was on his feet, Logan helped him get away just seconds before flames burst (爆炸) 30 feet into the air.
Firefighters arrived and put out the fire. Both Cori and Logan were taken to the hospital. Logan suffered second-degree burns on his arms and got hurt in his back, while Cori had a broken arm and several burns.
“I don’t know how we both got out. I’m lucky to be alive,” Logan said. “The craziest thing about the whole situation is the pilot and I share the same birthday.”
Sounds like it was meant to be, right? Well, this story gets even more coincidental (巧合的), Logan has always planned to enter college to learn about planes so he can become a pilot.

Because of their SMA, the twins only spent two years in the school. However, they didn’t think of this as a big problem. Since they had each other as study partners (伙伴) at home, it wasn’t lonely.
The twins’ father encouraged them in reading and travelling. He believed that reading and experiencing the world were more important than grades. From 2017 to 2019, the family went on trips across China. Their vehicle was modified (改进) so that they could lie down and sleep during the long trips.
During the family’s trips, they gave away books to children living in poor areas. They hope to share their love for reading. But they felt it wasn’t enough and wanted to do more and do it better.
The twins had been thinking about opening their own library for several years. Recently, the twins decided to put their plans into action, changing their living room into a mini-library.
Two years ago, the twins’ father passed away and they have been carrying on with his words and memories. “Living with SMA hasn’t been easy, but we are full of hope and never give up when facing any difficulties in life. We want to pass this hope on to others,” said Zhao Wenjing.

Homework is a problem for students all over the world. As a student, you have lots of homework to do every day.
Be sure you understand the homework.
Write your homework down in your notebook if you need to.
Many schools have a study hall. It is designed to allow students to study on their own. It’s more interesting to play with friends. But the more homework you finish at school, the less you’ll have to do that night.
Take a break.
It’s difficult to hold your attention for too long. So take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without relaxing will make you feel very tired.
Make a plan.
If you don’t finish your homework at school, think about how much you have left so you can plan your time. Most students have between 1 hour and 3 hours of homework at night. If it’s a heavy homework day, you’ll need to spend more time on it.

You’re not alone
Remember everybody else in your year is in the same boat. They may not realize it, but they’re just as nervous as you are. Moving to senior high school is a chance, not a problem. Things are different and all you need to do is to be polite and learn the new rules.
Teachers are ready to help
Teachers are probably the best people to turn to as they’re experienced in helping new students. Some senior high schools also have a “friends system”. If your school has this, then you will be paired with older students. They will help you if you have any problems.
Other points
If you’ve got an older brother or sister at the school, ask them for advice. Be yourself! It sounds simple, but people will know you much better if you just act naturally. Besides, having early nights makes a difference and you’ll find it easier to get up in the morning!
