A new research suggests that children who are brought up on healthy diets are more intelligent compared with those junk food eaters. It was found toddlers (蹒跚学步的孩子) who are fed a diet high in fats, sugars, and processed foods had lower IQs than those fed pasta, salads and fruit. The effect is so great that researchers from the University of Bristol said those children with a “healthier” diet may get an IQ improvement. Scientists stressed a good diet was vital in a child’s early life as the brain grows at its fastest rate during the first three years of life. This indicated head growth at this time is linked to intellectual ability and it is possible that good nutrition during this period may encourage the best brain growth.
Scientists followed the long-term health and happiness of around 14, 000 children born in 1991 and 1992 as part of the West Country’s Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Parents were quizzed about the types and frequency of the food and drink their children consumed when they were three, four, seven and eight and a half years old. Their answers were marked on a sliding scale (浮动计算表). Minus two is for the healthiest while ten is for the unhealthiest. IQ was measured by a test—the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (韦氏儿童智力量表) —of 4, 000 children when they were eight and a half years old. The results found after considering some other factors, a mainly processed food diet at the age of three was connected with a lower IQ at the age of eight and a half, but whether the diet was improved after that age would never influence the result. Every one point increase in dietary score was connected with a 1.67 fall in IQ.

Then the good feeling goes away, leaving us wanting more. All delicious food do this, but sugar has a specially strong effect.
"It seems like every time I study an illness and trace a path to the first cause, I find my way back to sugar," says scientist Richard Johnson. One-third of adults in the world have high blood pressure and up to 347 million have too much sugar in their blood. Why? "Sugar, we believe, is one of the culprits, if not the main culprit," says Johnson.
Early humans often had very little food, so our bodies learned to be very good at storing sugar as fat. In this way, we had energy stored for when there was no food. But today, most people have more than enough. So the very thing that once saved us may now be killing us.
So what is the solution? It’s easy to see that we need to eat less sugar. The trouble is, in today's world, it's very difficult to avoid. More and more foods are filled with it. Some producers even use sugar to replace taste in foods that are advertised as low in fat. This may make the food appear as healthier, but large amount of sugar are often added.
But there are those who are fighting back against sugar. Many schools are replacing sugary desserts with healthier food like fruit. Other schools are growing their own food in gardens, or building places for students and others in the community to exercise. The battle has not yet been lost.

“It’s the first research to show that dogs are sensitive(敏感) to our facial expressions,” says the author Ludwig Huber at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna.
In the Austrian study, 20 different kinds of pet dogs were taught to play a computer game through a series of exercises. In the first step, the dogs were shown two touch screens, one with a circle and the other with a square. Through the exercises, they learned that a treat would appear if they chose the right one.
Eleven of the 20 dogs were able to catch on to rules of the game and make it to the next test, where they were shown photos of happy and angry faces. The dogs were rewarded if they picked certain expression correctly. During the test, the dogs were shown only the upper half or the lower half of a face.
“It was easier to teach the dogs to choose a happy expression than an angry one, suggesting the dogs do understand the meaning behind the expression,” Huber says.
As a test, the dogs were then presented with:
the same half of the faces they saw during the training, but from different people,
the other half of the faces used in training,
the other half of new faces,
the left half of the faces used in training.
In the cases, the dogs chose the right answer 70 to 100 per cent of the time.
Dogs who had been trained to recognize an expression of anger happiness on the upper part of a face could find the same expression when they were shown only the lower part. Huber says, “The only possible explanation is that they recall from the memory of everyday life how a whole human face looks when happy or angry.”
Dog owners know their pets not only recognize emotions but also understand the feelings.

Metal braces are still used, but you might get braces that are the same color as your teeth instead. There are even braces that go behind your teeth where no one can see them. The wires (金属线) used in braces today are also smaller, but they can straighten your teeth faster and more easily.
Braces straighten teeth by putting pressure on your teeth over a period of time. The wires on your braces help to move your teeth, and the rubber bands (橡皮筋) help to correct the way your teeth line up. People wear braces for different lengths of time, but for most people it’s usually about two years.
Food stays on the braces easily, so you need to keep your teeth clean. You’ll have to stay away from some foods that are problems for braces, such as popcorn and candy. Soft drinks and juice can cause a problem, too, because the sugar on braces may cause toothache. Be sure to brush your teeth after meals.

① The Secret Garden first appeared in episodes (片段;集) in an American magazine in 1910. It was called Mistress Mary. It was published as a book with the title The Secret Garden in 1911. At that time, it was not as popular as Little Lord Fauntleroy. However today, it is one of the most popular children’s books of the 21st century.

But with the help of Mary, Dickon and the secret garden, he gets well.
③ Both had to move to a strange new country because of the deaths of their parents, both loved reading and had lively imaginations. When she wrote the book, Frances was interested in new religious (宗教的) ideas. She believed God was in everything, but especially in nature.

Objects under water will appear larger than they would on the surface, too. Be careful not to tell any stories about the big fish that got away. That fish might not be so big after all! It's just because sometimes things can seem to be as much as about 33 percent bigger in water!
What's more, in deeper water, colors just don't seem as bright. In fact, it looks as if some colors are missing. Remember the color of an object results from the wavelengths(波长)of light that are reflected(反射)from its surface. And light is taken in as it moves down through the water.
Swimmers wear wet suits to keep warm underwater. Let's take a bright red, yellow, and blue wet suit as an example. These colors are hard to miss on the surface of water. Watch carefully the changes in color as you descend in the water. The red part now looks almost black because the red light wavelengths, the longest among these three colors, are missing. As you go down deeper, the same thing will happen to the yellow part and in the end to the blue part. Even at a place of about 6 to 9 meters underwater, you will look terrible, like a ghost! And you have to wait for your return to the surface to enjoy the bright colors again!
