In general, laws for children are a good thing.
One hundred years ago in industrial countries, children worked 18 hours a day in a factory at age seven. The factory owner could beat a child who fell asleep or was not fast enough. Both parents and teachers could do the same.
Today, there are many laws about children all over the world. Some people think children must obey (遵守) rules or they should be punished (惩罚), others do not agree. The Intuits or Eskimos in Alaska almost never punish their children. The parents don’t hit them. If the children go too far, the parents punish them by making fun of them.
Children in other parts of the world are not as lucky as Eskimo children. American parents can spank (打臀部) their children at home, but a teacher cannot hit a child in a public school. This is also true in Germany. In contrast (对比), it is against the law for anyone to hit a child in Sweden. Swedish parents cannot spank their children. The children also have a special government official who works for their rights. There is even a plan for children to divorce (分离) from their parents though this is not a law yet!
1. What would the teachers do if a child in industrial countries fell asleep in class 100 years ago?2. What does “go too far” mean in Chinese?
3. Can a teacher in Germany hit his students in public school?
4. In which country can parents spank children at home?

If you go to a fast food restaurant, you will probably see a lot of teenagers(青少年). Today, many teenagers are fat, and some of this is because of their bad eating habits. Most teenagers love food with a lot of fat, oil, salt and sugar. People often call this kind of food “junk food”. But bad eating habits are worse than fast food. We find many teenagers have bad eating habits. Some don’t have breakfast before they go to school. During the day, some don’t have a right meal for lunch. In a recent study at one school, scientists find that more than two-thirds of the students don’t have a healthy diet. They don’t like vegetables, and many of them don’t like to eat fruits. They like to eat food with a lot of salt, sugar, or fat(脂肪)better.
Parents today also worry about their children’s diet. Some doctors give the following advice:
★ Teenagers shouldn’t eat too much junk food.
★ Teenagers shouldn’t eat food with too much salt. Salt can cause high blood pressure(高血压)in the future.
★ Teenagers should eat food with less fat, oil and sugar.

“Come and have a look. My things are really good and cheap!” The sounds are from a middle school in Hunan. It is the school’s flea market(跳蚤市场). Students like it very much. And they have it on the fourth Friday every month.
At the market, the buyers and sellers are the students of the school. There are books, bags, clothes and many other things on sale. Many students like to go to the market to buy what they need.
The organizers(组织者)think it can help students learn how to get on well with other students. One of the organizers of the activity(活动)says, “On the one hand, our school is a closed-in(封闭的) school. Students at school don’t have what they need sometimes. On the other hand, some students have some things that they don’t need any more. So we want to open this market.”

People say that family is the first school of life, and parents are a child’s first teachers. On October 23, the Law on Family Education Promotion (《家庭教育促进法》) was passed by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (全国人大常委会). It was carried out on January 1, 2022.
The law says that parents should be responsible (负责的) for family education. For example, the law prevents parents from placing too much stress on their children. Parents should carefully organize time for children to study, rest, play and exercise, and make sure children don’t become addicted to (沉迷于) the Internet.
Also, it says that society should provide guidance, support and services for family education. In fact, 50 percent of parents said they did not know how to educate their children, according to a survey by All-China Women’s Federation.
The law encourages schools to organize family education guidance and practice activities. Local governments are asked to help schools and families to better communicate with each other.
The law also gives special mention to children of migrant workers (外出务工人员) in the countryside. They may be alone when their parents have left to work in cities. And it asks the local governments to keep a close eye on such families, and help the parents get jobs locally so that they can be responsible for their children’s education.

Trees are important in our life. However, the Philippines, China’s neighbor, is facing a serious problem — the loss of forest cover. In fact, the Philippines is one of the world’s most deforested (滥伐的) countries with total forest cover dropping from 70% to just 20% during the 20th century. Luckily, a new law may help the country to solve the problem because it requires students to plant at least 10 trees each before they graduate.
Congressman (国会议员) Gary Alejano introduced the bill (议案) first and later the Philippine Congress passed it. The bill states that this requirement applies to (适用于) all students in order to graduate from primary school, high school and college. If the students want to graduate, each of them must plant no fewer than 10 trees. Every year, there are over 12 million students graduating from primary school, nearly 5 million students graduating from high school and almost 500,000 students graduating from college in this country. If the law is carried out properly and completely, at least 175 million new trees will be planted each year. “Even if only 10% of all the planted trees are able to stay alive, it will still result in 525 million trees in the course of one generation (一代人).”
Mr. Alejano points out this law will do more than help make our earth a greener place. His main goal is to help bring environmental understanding to future generations.
1. What problem is the Philippines facing now?2. Why can the new law solve the problem?
3. Who introduced the bill first?
4. How many tees will be planted in the Philippines every year thanks to the law?
5. Can the law help make our earth clean?
