Bear and Hare Warm Up
One cold frosty morning, Bear woke up from the middle of his long winter sleep. He walked around outside his home and noticed that the water in the lake had frozen over.
“Good thing I’m not made of water,” he said, “or I’d turn to ice.”
“But you are made of water,” said Hare, who was turnbling around on a snow bank beside him. “Over half your body is water.”
“You must be fooling,” said Bear. He looked at his body. His arms didn’t look like water. His legs didn’t look like water. His paws didn’t look like water.
“Think of all your blood,” said Hare. “Your blood’s made of water. In fact, all your parts are made of cells, and cells are made of water.”
Bear rubbed his paws together and blew on them to keep them warm. “I don’t want to freeze like the lake,” he said.
“Don’t worry,” Hare giggled. “We’re warm-blooded animals. That means our body temperature stays the same, even when it’s cold outside. Besides, our body water isn’t pure water. It contains organic molecules (分子) like sodium (钠) and potassium (钾) that make its freezing point lower than regular. We can only freeze in very extreme conditions.”
“Brrrrrr.” Bear shook because of the cold.
“See, when you shake like that, your body’s using energy to make more heat and warm you up.”
“I know a better way to warm up,” said Bear. “Let’s go inside.”
They walked into Hare’s house. Bear relaxed by the fireplace. A few minutes later, the snow on his fur melted and dripped into puddles on the floor.
A teapot whistled on the store. Bear looked at the teapot and saw a thick stream of steam shooting into the air.
“How are you feeling now?” Hare asked as he brought Bear a cup of black tea.
“I’m still afraid,” Bear said as he touched the steaming teacup in his paws.
“Don’t be silly,” Hare told him. “Even though you’re made of water, you know you aren’t going to turn to ice.”
“I know,” Bear said. “But now I’m afraid I’ll evaporate.”

Ants can discover the cancerous cells which are different from healthy cells. Thanks to their sense of smell, the study also added, ants could turn out to be better at locating(定位)cancerous cells in humans than dogs.
To improve their research, the scientists had tests with 36 ants, smelling cells under an experiment with a lower cost and efficient study. First, they exposed(暴露)the ants to the smell of a sample of cancerous human cells, then they were given sugar for a prize. In a second step, the scientists exposed the ants to two different smells. One was a new smell and the second was the smell of the cancerous cells. Finally, the ants followed the cancerous cells directly with the smell they had smelt in the first step. This test shows that ants can tell the differences between the cancerous cells and healthy cells with high talent, capability to learn quickly, points out CNRS in a news.
This isn’t the first time that scientists have used the animal sense of smell to find cancerous cells. For example, dogs’ noses are fit for medical diagnosis and used for the detection of cancer, which can offer the proper medical treatment, the scientists explained. However, training them to do so requires several months to a year.
The test could be used in various of other smell tasks, such as finding the differences among the drugs, explosives(炸药), spoiled food, or other diseases.

Researchers from University College London studied data from 35,000 people in the UK between the ages of 40 and 69. They compared the brain scans of nappers and non-nappers and found some key differences. The results showed that those who liked to nap had larger brains than those who didn’t. This meant that the brains of nappers aged more slowly.
Dr. Victoria Garfield, who worked on the study, said the research could help scientists understand how people can keep their brains healthy as they get older. She added, “I hope studies like this can help to change the bad impression (印象) people have about daytime napping.”
In Spain, the tradition of an afternoon nap, called a siesta, has been around for thousands of years. Most likely it was started to allow farmers time to cool off during the hottest part of the day. Today, office workers take a break and shops close from about 2 to 4 p.m. Because they rest during the day, people in Spain usually stay up until midnight. And in some parts of Italy, people take a post-lunch nap called a riposo. In China, a short nap in the office is used to help improve work performance in the afternoon. Some workplaces even have nap rooms where workers can go to rest.

The boy and his father pulled up to a farm where a very poor family lived. They spent several days on the farm, helping the family work for their food and take care of their land. When they left the farm, his dad asked his son if he enjoyed their trip and if he had learned anything during the time they spent with this other family.
The boy quickly replied, “It was fantastic. That family is so lucky!” Confused, his father asked what he meant by that. We have a pool in our yard, but they have a river running through their farm that is endless. We have lanterns outside so we can see at night, but they have the wide open sky and the beautiful stars to give them wonder and light.
We have a patio (露台), but they have the whole horizon (地平线) to enjoy—they have endless fields to run around in and play. We have to go to the store for food, but they are able to grow their own food.
