One day, I picked up my daughter Lingling from school and went to the supermarket for a few things. I was hoping to be in and out quickly.
I found a short line with just one person in front of me. It was an old woman, and she was paying for her things with only coins. After a long day at work, I thought the woman was very terrible.
But then I watched a young salesman. He helped her count her coins, ever so kindly taking them from her shaking hands. I listened to him repeatedly say to her: “ Yes, ma’am (女士). ” When she asked if she had enough money to buy a bag, he told her she did. Then he walked over two lines and got one for her. This salesman wasn’t angry at all. He was patient and kind.
As I was watching him, I saw Lingling was too. I realised my daughter was learning an important lesson from a stranger.
When the woman was finished, the salesman began ringing up my things and thanked me for my patience (耐心). I thanked him too. I found the manager and told him about the salesman’s kindness and patience.
Then we left the supermarket with a full basket, but also with a heart full of thankfulness for such an important lesson.

“Isn’t it beautiful?” said my seven-year-old daughter.
I opened my eyes widely and looked at the snake skin in fear. I didn’t think it was beautiful, but I learned never to appear nonchalant(冷漠的)with children. Everything they see for the first time is important to their sense of beauty; they see only excellence in the world.
“Why does it do this?” Sarah asked.
“Snakes shed(蜕) their skins because they need to renew themselves,” I explained.
“Why do they need to
“We often need to shed our skins, those coatings that we cover ourselves with,” I said to my daughter. “We leave some things and find other thing unwanted or unnecessary. This snake no longer needs this skin. It is probably too little for him, and he probably doesn’t think he looks as smart in it as he once did. “
As we talked, I knew that she began to understand. Although she couldn’t understand clearly, she would know that renewal is part of progress; that we need to take a good look at ourselves, our rooms, schoolwork and spirit, and see what we need to keep and what we need to leave. I was careful to tell that this is a natural way, not one to be forced.
“Snakes don’t peel off their skins when they like them. “I explained. “It happens as a natural thing of their growth. “
“I see, Dad,” said Sarah as she held the snake skin, and then ran off.
I hoped she would remember this; we need to throw some away because they are worthless or unnecessary. Then we can store them as memories m our deep hearts.

To make the book more friendly to older readers, Liu also made the pages light yellow and the Chinese characters big. “The old people can look in the book any time they need, just like using a dictionary,” said Liu.
The SilverHair members have printed out 500 copies of the guidebook using their own money and handed them out. They’ll soon work on the second book, which will have more guidance. But they hope that people can give money to them so that they can print more copies and help more old people.

What can you do to help out?
Are there any environmental problems in your city? What causes them? Are there ways to stop them?
One winter morning, Tapiwa Chiwewe was driving to work in Johannesburg, South Africa. He noticed a haze (薄雾) hanging over the city and it didn’t take long for him to realize that it was an enormous cloud of air pollution.
At that moment, Chiwewe felt an urge to do something about it, but didn’t know what. He was a computer engineer and knew little about environmental science.
He first did research on air pollution and found that it is the world’s biggest environmental health risk. He decided to work on it in a cooperative (合作的) way. He talked to scientists, officials, and engineers who helped him develop a deeper understanding of the situation, as well as an idea to improve it.
Through years of work, Chiwewe and his coworkers from South Africa and China created an online air quality decision support system (系统). Based on historical and real-time data, the system can accurately (精确地) predict air pollution and air quality, which can help people make better decisions about their daily movements, as well as help officials better manage their operations.
Chiwewe learned an important lesson –“a lesson we all need to take into heart if we are to work towards a better future. Even if you’re not an expert in a particular field, your outside expertise (专业知识) may hold the key to solving problems within that field,” he said.
What if Chiwewe hadn’t bothered to research the problem and do something about it? What if he had just hoped that someone, somewhere, was taking care of the matter?
As Chiwewe said: “Why not just go ahead and deal with the problem as well as you can, in your own way? You may be pleasantly surprised.”

David said that it all came from an experience with his mother that happened when he was about four years old. He tried to remove a bottle of milk from the fridge and it fell, spilling the milk all over the kitchen floor - a real sea of milk!
Instead of shouting at him, giving him a lecture or punishing him, his mother said, “What a great and wonderful mess you have made! Well, the damage has already been done. Would you like to get down and play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?”
Indeed, he did. After a few minutes, his mother said, “David, whenever you make a mess like this, which do you prefer to use, a sponge, or a mop?” He chose the sponge and together they cleaned up the floor.
His mother then said, “You have a failed experiment in how to successfully carry a big milk bottle with two tiny hands. Let’s go out in the back yard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can discover a way to carry it without dropping it.” The little boy then learned that if he held the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it.

My grandfather loves fishing. When we were younger, he tried to get my brother and I excited about it. “It’s a wonderful way to spend the afternoon together,” he told us. Every Saturday he asked us to go with him. At first we would, but fishing seemed so boring to us. At last we told him that fishing wasn’t our thing.
One Saturday afternoon not long ago, I changed my mind and decided to go with him. I thought that maybe I would enjoy fishing more now that a few years have passed. So down to the water we went. We got in the water, threw the line, and waited, and waited. After three hours all we had was a single tiny fish.
“Grandpa, why do you like standing out here for hours like this?” I asked. “You’ve done nothing all afternoon!”
“Well” he said. “When I was a boy, fishing wasn’t ‘nothing’. In fact, it was everything. I didn’t have TV, or video games, or smart phones. So I fished. Now, when I fish, I go back to being that boy. It was a happy time.”
This photo really changed how I see my grandfather. He is the man who has seen many changes and has had many experiences. Looking at the photo also reminds me that opinion of fishing changed that afternoon. Right after I took the picture, Grandpa felt a strong pull on his line. In a few seconds the two of us were struggling to bring in the biggest fish I had ever seen! It was really exciting. From then on I went fishing with him whenever I could.
