Archer is a seven-year-old boy in Australia. One day last year, he woke up in the middle of the night and walked into his mum’s bedroom. What he saw really frightened him: His mum was lying on the floor. Archer tried to wake her up, but he couldn’t. Anastasia Barros, Archer’s mum, has diabetes (糖尿病). Her blood sugar level had dropped so low that night that she had passed out.
Fortunately, Ms. Barros had spoken to Archer about calling Triple Zero (0-0-0). In Australia, people dial this emergency number to call for police, fire or emergency (突发事件), medical services. Archer’s father was away on business, so it was up to the boy to save his mum. Archer immediately reached for his mum’s phone. He tried to be calm and dialed “0-0-0.”
“Hi, it’s just me and mum,” Archer told the call-taker. “Mum has passed out and is now lying on the floor!” The boy listened carefully to the call-taker’s instructions. He turned his mum’s head back to open her airway (气道). Soon, the ambulance arrived and sent Ms. Barros to the hospital.
Archer is not just his mum’s hero; he has also been named a Triple-Zero Hero by the local emergency services. The boy said he was very proud to be awarded for his clear thinking during the emergency.
Marty Smyth, the manager of the local emergency services, said it was very important to teach children when and how to call Triple Zero. Archer agreed. “By knowing how to get help in an emergency, all kids can help their mothers,” he said.

As if understanding my confusion (困惑), Ms. Whitney began to explain in her gentle but authoritative (温柔却威严的) voice, “Homework sometimes needs cooperation. When others can’t solve a problem, and you can do it, you can help them. It provides you with the chance to grow and learn.”
It was at that moment I heard a pop in my head, a feeling as if the confusion around the two words had disappeared. Homework brings out kindness, and kindness in turn creates an environment that encourages everyone to practice.
Ms. Whitney proved the truth behind those words during the following days. Every day, we were divided into groups and made to stand next to each other, working on problems that came like a never-ending flood (洪水). The first day, I was a bit uncomfortable working with another person. But soon, as we discussed questions and helped each other, that uncomfortable feeling began to disappear.
In a classroom filled with friendly discussion and Ms. Whitney’s happy voice calling out, “Kindness and Homework!” whenever she saw one of us sitting alone or in need of help, math class was never as boring as it had been before. It was hard to believe that homework problems could change the way people think. In the past, I could only think of one way to solve a problem, but now I can think of more than two ways. Learning in Ms. Whitney’s class has helped me find the reason to learn, which will help me for the rest of my journey abroad.

A.By explaining her words over and over again. |
B.By discussing with her students. |

He lived in a small house, but he had a large garden. He kept many animals in his garden. His favorite animals were Dab-Dab, a duck; Jip, a dog; Gub-Gub, a baby pig and Polynesia, a parrot. He also kept some fish, rabbits, cats, a squirrel, a cow and a baby cow, a horse, chickens and so on.
Dr. Dolittle didn’t have many patients. Most people didn’t like all of his animals, so when they were ill, they went to a doctor in another town.
“But you don’t have any money,” his sister told him. “You need patients.”
“I have a patient,” Dr. Dolittle answered, “The cat’s-meat-man. He’s the man who sells me meat for the cat.”
“He doesn’t pay you enough to live on,” his sister told him.
“Then I’ll sell everything I have,” he said.
And he did. He sold most of his furniture. He also sold most of his clothes. Then he had enough money to buy food for himself and his animals.
One day, the cat’s-meat-man said to him, “Why don’t you stop being a doctor for people and become a doctor for animals instead? I’m sure that you know a lot about animals-more than most vets. You wrote a wonderful book about cats. I’d send all the people with sick dogs or cats to you.”
When the cat’s-meat-man left, Polynesia, the parrot, flew onto the table. “He’s right, Doctor,” Polynesia said. “You should become an animal doctor.”
“There are a lot of vets,” Dr. Dolittle said.
“Perhaps there are a lot of vets. But you’d be the best vet of all. I’m not the only animal that can talk. All the animals can talk. Each kind of animal has its own language. I’ll teach you mine if you like.”
“Yes, please,” Dr. Dolittle said. He opened a drawer (抽屉) and took out a notebook and pencil. “Will you teach me the parrot’s ABCs first?” he asked.
Polynesia agreed to teach Dr. Dolittle parrot language. Later that day, Jip came into the room. Polynesia said, “He’s talking to you, Doctor.”
“I don’t think he is,” Dr. Dolittle said. “He’s just scratching (挠) himself.”
“Dogs talk with their ears, their noses, and their tails,” Polynesia told him. They don’t always make a noise. Do you see how he is moving his nose now?”
“Yes.”
“He is telling us that it has stopped raining, and he wants to ask you a question.”
Every day, Dr. Dolittle learned the languages of the animals. When people found out he was now an animal doctor, they brought their sick pets to him.
One day, a horse said to him, “You’re a much better animal doctor than the vet. You knew I couldn’t see well, and you made glasses for me.”
The horse was very pleased. He could see very well. He told all his friends how clever Dr. Dolittle was, and they told all their friends. Soon, many animals came to see him. He had a different door for each animal, and he wrote the name of each kind of animal above each door. HORSES, COWS,...
Before long, every animal that lived in or near the town became the doctor’s patient. He was very happy, and he liked his life very much.

When Emily handed Ms. Miller her homework, she couldn’t imagine how writing a short story would lead to more than a grade.
Emily, who was shy, had few close friends. In her art class, when other students discussed painting skills, she usually kept quiet. No one except Sofia seemed to notice her at all.
Emily wanted to invite Sofia to see the art show at the local museum. Every time she had an opportunity to bring it up, she would start by talking about her own painting. She wasn’t sure where else to begin and she never got to the invitation before the bell rang.
When Emily received an A+ on her story, she was excited. She knew that writing was fun and came easily to her, but she didn’t realize she was good at it. Ms. Miller’s opinion about her story made her think she had a special talent, kind of like Sofia’s for painting. Ms. Miller encouraged her to enter an upcoming national writing competition.
At the beginning, Emily didn’t want to enter the competition. She was worried about losing her new pride in herself if she didn’t win. But Ms. Miller insisted that taking risks was part of knowing who you were and what you could do.
Emily finally agreed to enter the competition. When she won second place, she was still proud of herself to be brave enough to enter the competition. She felt so good when she took the risk of asking Sofia to the art show, and Sofia said yes.
