The oil paper umbrella is a traditional Chinese handicraft(手工艺品). It has a history of over 1,000 years in China. In early Tang Dynasty, it was introduced to Japan and Korea, so it was called the “Tang Umbrella”. Later oil paper umbrellas were spread to other Asian countries, such as Vietnam, Thailand and Laos, and each had its own style. However, as steel-ribbed(钢骨的)umbrellas appeared in the last century, the hand-made oil paper umbrellas became less used in daily life. They were turned into decorative artifacts(装饰性工艺品).
Yuhang in Hangzhou is known for making oil paper umbrellas for more than 230 years. They are mainly made of skin paper(皮纸), bamboo, a coating of Tung oil(桐油). They need to take more than 70 steps to make, including making bamboo ribs, pesting papers(糊纸)and painting patterns(图案). It takes at least a week to make per umbrella. In 2008, these umbrellas were added to Intangible Cultural Heritage List(非物质文化遗产名录)of China.
A young man called Liu Weixue learned the traditional art of making Yuhang oil paper umbrellas from his grandfather. “I want to bring the art to life.” Liu said. He improved the umbrellas to win the hearts of young people. As the traditional paper was easy to break, he started to use a kind of thicker paper. In a test, his umbrellas were opened and closed for 1,000 times without breaking. He used a kind of lighter bamboo to make the umbrellas weigh less.
Now Liu hopes the art can be passed on. He goes to local schools to teach students. He also goes to events in different places to promote(推广)the art.

Tourist maps, for example, have signs to show places of interest in an area. When tourists read these maps, it is easy for them to find where to go and what to see in a place and it is easy for them to go and find their ways to these places. | Distribution maps(分布图) use colors or signs to show facts about an area. For example, where different languages are spoken, how many people live in an area, how cold and hot some places are, or if a place is short of water. |
Road maps show large areas so that people can plan long journeys. Different types of roads are given different numbers. For example, if you want to go to Wood Green, you just follow No. 621 Road and keep looking at the road signs. | Some maps, such as railway maps, use straight lines to show everything. No, it’s not laziness—it could be because we need more sleep during the cold months. A team of scientists studied the sleeping habits of almost 200 people. During the study, the participants (参与者) had been asked to go to sleep at the same time as usual, but they were told not to use alarms. The participants were tested for several days each month over a year.
The results showed that people got more REM sleep in winter than in spring—about 30 minutes more on average. REM, which means rapid eye movement, is important for brain development. Dreams usually happen during REM sleep. And we’re more likely to remember these dreams.
There are different stages of our sleep, and REM usually starts 60 to 90 minutes after we go to sleep. However, we leave this stage several times, and most of our REM sleep actually happens in the second half of the night. The body tries to get as much REM sleep as it needs—so if you’re getting more, then it’s for a good reason, say experts.
All those who took part in the German study had sleep problems, and similar studies will need to be done on people who don’t have problems sleeping, say the researchers.
However, they think their results might show it could be a good idea for us to change our sleeping habits at different times of year.

For school students, making a homework plan (计划) is important. It can help you do your homework well.
First, be sure to understand what your teachers want you to do. Write it down in your notebook or planner if you need to, and be sure to ask questions about your homework if you really don’t understand. It’s much easier to take a minute to ask the teacher in or after class than to think hard all the night!
Second, use any free time in your classroom to work on your homework. Many schools have study halls. It’s interesting to play with your friends and classmates after class at school, but the more work you do in school, the less you’ll have to do that night.
Third, pace(调整节奏) yourself. If you don’t finish your homework at school, think about how much you have and what else is going on that day, and then plan your time. Eat less salt(盐). Foods like hot dogs have a lot of salt in them. So eat less or give them up. Stay away from foods with too much fat(脂肪). You can eat vegetables, fruits, fish and chicken. They are healthy for you. For example, you can eat chicken hamburgers instead of(而不是)beef hamburgers.

In Mandarin, "I love you" translates as “我爱你”, but the way it's used in China might be a little different, and Chinese are wondering why.
The Global Times reports that two online videos showing children telling their parents "I love you" have been widely spread in China. The first, filmed by an Anhui TV station, shows a number of college students telling their parents they love them. The answers are mixed. "Are you drunk?" asked one parent. In another similar video, a father even said— "I am going to a meeting, so cut the crap."
Even the positive attitudes make it clear that the words are expressed rarely. "I am so happy you called to say that. It is the happiest thing that happened to me in 2014," one parent answered.
However, Chinese families hardly use those words. "The parents' answers show that many Chinese are not good at expressing positive feelings," Xia Xueluan, a Sociologist from Peking University, told the Global Times. "They are used to educating children with negative language."
This isn't the first time that China has done some soul-searching about familial love — last year China Daily asked a lot of people if they said 'I love you' to their parents, lovers, and children. "I have never said 'I love you' to my family, and I don't think I will in the future," one 56-year-old told the paper, "Saying it aloud is embarrassing for me."
Still, that doesn't mean that love can't be expressed. In another article, China Daily spoke to Zhao Mengmeng, a 31-year-old woman who said she had never told her father she loved him face-to-face. Sometimes actions speak louder than words, however — Zhao gave her father, a photo album featuring photographs of them together on every one of her birthdays in June 2012. The pictures were popular online, being forwarded hundreds of thousands of times on Weibo. Her father was very excited when he heard about it.

Shadow puppetry is a form of theater that uses puppets made from leather or paper, accompanied by music and singing. Invented during the Western Han Dynasty, it tells us about folk and historical stories, passing down culture and customs over thousands of years.
Shadow puppetry is all about creating the puppets and performing with them. Wang’s hometown of Hua county (now Huazhou district), Shaanxi, is known as the birthplace of the folk art.
Puppet-makers must follow 24 steps to make the puppets, including washing the leather, carving(雕刻), and painting, according to Wang. Carving is the most difficult part. “We have special carving skill—moving the leather under the knife,” Wang said. “You have to hold the knife still in your right hand and only move the leather in your left hand.” It took Wang three years to master this skill. She used a brick to strengthen her left hand while practicing. “It takes about 3,000 carves to make a shadow puppet. The complicated(复杂的) steps make it hard to hand down the folk art,” she said.
But Wang has found a way to do so. In 2016, she made shadow puppets based on the cartoon series Huyao Xiao Hongniang (《狐妖小红娘》) and gave a lively performance. She used colors like blue and purple that are seldom seen in shadow puppetry and added more sticks to the puppets to make the performance more vivid.
