Scientists looked for paw prints(爪印) in the forests. In this way, they knew the number of pandas! “It’s hard to see pandas in the wild,” said Colby, a scientist. “They hide in the thick bamboo forests. “That’s why scientists used paw prints to get the number. The number of the pandas was a surprise to Scientists. They learned that more pandas lived in the wild!

“We found pandas living in areas we didn’t know,” said Colby. Although the news is good, pandas are in danger.

Here are some fun facts of pandas:

It takes a panda more than 10 hours to eat 9 kg to 14 kg of bamboo every day.

A newborn panda weighs 90-130 grams. That is about the weight of a mouse. A panda’s front paws have wrist bones(腕骨). The panda uses them to catch bamboo.

The main threat to pandas is that their land is becoming smaller and smaller. Pandas lose their land when people cut down parts of the forest for wood and farming. Now, China has13 nature reserves(保护区). People mustn’t cut down trees there. Scientists want to create more nature centres to give pandas a better chance to live.

Do you like exercise? Do you know something about plank (平板支撑) exercise?

Plank exercise has become more and more popular in recent years. It requires little time. It’s easy to do. What’s more, doing plank exercise regularly may bring you lots of benefits.

Performing plank exercise as a daily home exercise before or after school will not only speed up your metabolism (新陈代谢), but also keep your metabolic rate high all day long. Doing the exercise regularly will make you burn lots of calories. This is especially useful if you have to sit in the classroom for hours every day. A high metabolic rate will help you lose weight and keep in good shape.

Have you ever tried standing on one leg? You couldn’t stand straight for more than ten seconds, right? It’s not because you are drunk, of course. Instead, it’s because your muscles (肌肉) aren’t strong enough to give you the balance you need. Doing plank exercise regularly will improve your balance. Stronger muscles will also help you stand with straight posture (姿势) at all times.

_________ Just think about it: You are sitting in your chair, at home or at school, all day long. Your muscles get tired, and your legs get heavy. Plank exercise will relax the muscle groups that may cause stress in the body. As a result, it can have a powerful and positive effect on our mood.

文章大意:本文介绍了科学家研究发现吃大量的蔬菜可能不会大大降低患心脏病的风险。不仅蔬菜,还有一些其他的可能影响人们的心脏健康。

【推荐2】Doctors across the world tell us it is necessary to eat lots of vegetables to keep the heart healthy. But a new study in February, 2022 suggested eating a lot of vegetables may not greatly cut down the risk of heart problems.

The study is from universities in Oxford and Hong Kong, China. Almost 400,000 people took part in it. They answered questions about their lifestyle, food, and what raw (生的) and cooked vegetables they ate. The study actually found that the risk of dying from heart problems was around 15% lower for those eating the most vegetables, especially raw vegetables.

However, scientists explained that many other factors (因素) also have something to do with this 15% drop. These factors may affect (影响) our health just as much as vegetables. These include other things we eat, how much exercise we get, where we live and whether we smoke or drink. Lead researcher Dr. Qi Feng from the University of Oxford said, “Our large study did not find clear evidence (证据) that how many vegetables you take can cut down chances of heart problems.”

But does it mean that eating vegetables is futile? No. Many other scientists advise that people should still eat at least five kinds of fruit and vegetables every day. That’s because vegetables are important for keeping good health and reducing (减少) the risk of serious illnesses.

【推荐3】Have you ever seen people building houses? To build a house, you need workers. They use their hands, tools(工具)and machines to put things together. Building the ISS(国际太空站)is the same. The difference is that the workers are astronauts. They walk in space and use robots’ arms and hands to do their work.

In the space station, astronauts are comfortable. The temperature there is about 21°C. But outside the station, it can be too hot or cold for people. In the sunlight, it’s about 120°C. In the shadow(阴暗处)of the station, it’s about -85°C. So, when astronauts walk in space, they have to wear heavy clothes spacesuits.

Spacesuits also keep astronauts safe from flying rubbish(垃圾)in space. Each time people go into space, they leave rubbish there. Astronauts should be careful because there’s a lot of rubbish, and some rubbish goes many times as fast as a plane!
