Doctors across the world tell us it is necessary to eat lots of vegetables to keep the heart healthy. But a new study in February, 2022 suggested eating a lot of vegetables may not greatly cut down the risk of heart problems.
The study is from universities in Oxford and Hong Kong, China. Almost 400,000 people took part in it. They answered questions about their lifestyle, food, and what raw (生的) and cooked vegetables they ate. The study actually found that the risk of dying from heart problems was around 15% lower for those eating the most vegetables, especially raw vegetables.
However, scientists explained that many other factors (因素) also have something to do with this 15% drop. These factors may affect (影响) our health just as much as vegetables. These include other things we eat, how much exercise we get, where we live and whether we smoke or drink. Lead researcher Dr. Qi Feng from the University of Oxford said, “Our large study did not find clear evidence (证据) that how many vegetables you take can cut down chances of heart problems.”
But does it mean that eating vegetables is futile? No. Many other scientists advise that people should still eat at least five kinds of fruit and vegetables every day. That’s because vegetables are important for keeping good health and reducing (减少) the risk of serious illnesses.

The awards are given every year to the 10 strangest research projects of the year. It is to "honor achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think"
On September 12, the 2019 winners of the Ig Nobel Prize were announced. Here are three of them.
Medicine Prize: Pizza
It's one of the world's most popular foods. but what if we told you that a pizza can protect you against illness and death? According to the Ig Nobel Medicine Prize winner, eating more pizzas can lower the risk of cancer and heart disease---if your pizza is filled with fruits and veggies. These provide flavonoids (类黄酮) to fight against certain diseases. So, if you're a pizza enthusiast, you now have one more reason to love it!
Economics Prize: Dirty Money
As one of the most frequently passed items on the planet, paper money is known to pick up all kinks of bacteria (细菌). Which country's money is the dirtiest? To find the answer, an international team of scientist compared seven countries' paper money. They found that the notes including more polymer (聚合物) specifically the Romanian Leu carry more drug-resistant pathogens (病原体). Perhaps this will make cashless payments popular.
Biology Prize: Cockroach(蟑螂)
Cockroaches are well known for their survival abilities, but few people know they can sense magnetic (磁性的) fields. More surprisingly, an international team found that dead cockroaches have more magnetic properties (特性) than live ones. That's because magnetic properties drop when the temperature gets higher.
So if you can stand cockroaches, they may be good magnetic sensors.

C.Because paper money is useless, this makes cashless payments more popular. |
D.Because cockroaches have magnetic properties, people may apply this feature to sensors. |

It happens during the period when a baby’s babbling (咿呀声) slowly changes from unclear voices into that first “mama” or “dada”. The babies have to find out how to shape their lips to make the sounds they are hearing, according to developmental psychologist David Lewkowicz of Florida Atlantic University, who led the study.
Clearly it doesn’t take them too long to understand the movements that match basic sounds. By their first birthdays, babies start changing back to look you in the eye again. It offers more clues that quality face-time with babies is very important for speech development more than, say, turning on the latest baby DVD.
But Lewkowicz went a step further. He and his student Amy Hansen Tift tested nearly 180 babies, groups of them at ages 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 months. How? They showed videos of a woman speaking in English or French to babies of English speakers. They found that when the speaker used English, the 4-month-old babies gazed (凝视) mostly into her eyes. The 6-month-old babies spent equal amounts (数量) of time looking at the eyes and the mouth. The 8-month-old babies and 10-month-old babies studied mostly the mouth. At 12 months, attention started changing back toward the speaker’s eyes.
But what happened when these babies are used to English heard French? The 12-month-old babies studied the mouth longer, just like younger babies. They needed the extra information to understand the new sounds. That fits with research into bilingualism (双语) that shows babies’ brains adjust (调整) themselves to tell the differences between the sounds of their first language over other languages in the first year of life.
The continued lip reading shows the l-year-old babies clearly still are fit for learning. Babies are so hard to study, says Duke University cognitive scientist Greg Appelbaum, who found the research so fantastic that he wants to know more.

The study was published by the medical journal The Lancet. According to it, the average height of 19-year old Chinese males is 175.7 centimetres. They are the fifth tallest in Asia and the tallest in East Asia. The average height of Chinese females of the same age is 163.5 cm. They’re also the tallest in East Asia. More importantly, from 1985 to 2019, the average height of Chinese males saw the biggest rise among all the 200 countries and regions surveyed.
The findings also reveal that the world’s tallest men and women are largely found in northwestern and Central European countries. On the other hand, the shortest people can be found living across South Asia, South-east Asia, Latin America and East Africa.
The Netherlands is well-known for its tall population. And unsurprisingly, the nation has the tallest average height on Earth. The average height of 19-year-old men is 183.8 cm while women of the same age are 170.4 cm tall.
The study shows that many factors arc crucial(至关重要的)to the healthy growth and development of children, such as social, nutritional and environmental factors at home, school and within the community. It has also urged actions to invest in the nutrition of schoolchildren to make sure the children can grow healthily.

A plastic straw usually takes more than 200 years to break down (分解). It slowly turns into smaller and smaller pieces of plastic. If they fall into the sea, seabirds and fish will think the pieces are food for them to eat. It is bad for their health and may even kill them. Paper straws are quite different. They start to break down within just three days. They are much safer for animals and better for the environment (环境).
However, some people still don’t like paper straws. They think that using a paper straw will affect (影响) the taste of the drink. If you are one of them, here are some other things you can use. For example, glass straws are easy to clean and can be used for a long time. You can even use straws made from real straws. That’s what many people did in the 1800s-before plastic straws were invented (发明).

A team of researchers from New York, US did the study, reported Yahoo News.
The team did a study on 109 office workers across the US. They found that some of the workers saw lots of light during the morning hours, between 8 and lunchtime. The researchers found these workers had a better sleep than other workers. They also fell asleep more quickly at night.
Why is sunlight so important to our sleep? Researchers say it helps us set our “body clock”. When there is less and less sunlight at the end of the day, our body starts to make melatonin(褪黑素). It makes us feel sleepy so that we know it’s time to go to bed. Our body makes the most melatonin at night. But during the day, sunlight tells our body to make less melatonin so that we can stay awake and do our work.
Researchers suggest that we should see 15 minutes of sunlight in the morning. It can help balance the melatonin in our bodies.
