The documentary Born in China was shot in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (青藏高原) and shows animals’ lives during different seasons.
It not only brings to audiences the lives of animals that are rarely seen in the wild—giant pandas and Tibetan antelopes (藏羚羊), for example— but also shows traditional Chinese culture. The film mainly focuses on life and love within three animal families— giant pandas, golden monkeys and snow leopards.
A symbol of China, the giant panda is both black and white. Its body is thought to show yin and yang. The panda’s gentle nature (本性) also shows how yin and yang, when perfectly balanced, lead to peace and harmony (和谐). This can be seen in the documentary when a giant panda mother guides her baby to gradually look for independence and explore the world.
Monkeys always have strong personalities. The best example might be the Monkey King, a character from the popular novel Journey to the West (《西游记》). On one hand he stands for impatience. But on the other hand, he shows cleverness and energy. Born in China follows a 2- year-old golden monkey who feels like his life has been changed for the worse by his new baby sister. He quickly joins up with a group of other free-spirited monkeys, but finally returns to his family and understands the meaning of responsibility.
A mother snow leopard faces the challenge of raising her two children in a harsh (严酷的) environment. The leopards, known for their rapid attacks and quick footwork, have inspired a form of pictographic boxing (象形拳) in Shaolin martial arts (武术).
“Born in China is a means to show Chinese traditional culture,” director Lu told the Binhai Times newspaper. “From five-animal exercises to pictographic boxing, Chinese people have learned from wild animals since ancient times.

One of the hottest places on the earth is Death Valley (死亡谷) in North America. The animals there don’t use technology to keep cool. Instead, they have special abilities that help them live.
The kangaroo rat is a special animal there. During the day, the Valley gets hotter than 100°F. The kangaroo rat rests all day in a hole in the ground. It covers the hole with grass to keep out the heat, and comes out at night when it is cooler. This little rat is also very good at saving water. It gets all the water it needs from the food it eats. Some kangaroo rats never take a drink of water in their whole lives!
Animals get too hot if they lie on the hot sand too long. One snake, called the sidewinder, can solve this problem. When it travels, the sidewinder bends its body into a “W” shape. Then it uses the bottom parts of the “W” like legs and walks sideways. That way it touches only a little of the sand at a time, so the hot sand doesn’t burn the snake.
A lot of water in the desert is too salty for most animals to drink. However, one kind of fish. the desert pupfish, can live in these salty pools because it can drink the salt water.

Do you know what happened later? The acorn planted in the forest lived happily. It enjoyed the sunshine and rich soil. It wasn’t afraid of strong wind and heavy rain at all because there were so many trees standing around it. It was protected well by them. It grew fast. It looked strong but in fact it became weak because it didn’t spread its roots (根) for support. At last, it was easily blown down in a storm. What about the acorn standing on a hillside? It had to face every storm and wind by itself. As a result, its roots was deep into the earth and spread in every direction, even wrapping (包裹) themselves around large stones. At times, it seemed the tree wasn’t growing fast enough but the growth was happening underground. It knew it must make itself strong enough to protect from the threatening (恐吓) of winds and storms. Year by year, it stood straight there all the time no matter how bad the weather would be.
So don’t be afraid of adversity (困境)! Welcome it, please! It is necessary for us to meet it because it is the route (途径) to every success.

I’m the type of person who acts without thinking things clearly. I just do things as they come and hope for the best. That’s why I wasted all the spring playing and missed the chance to get a part-time job for the summer. What a terrible summer it was! My friends had jobs and money to buy things with. But I was too late. My summer ended up being long and boring.
My aunt Sara, is known in our family as a wise woman. She told me a story. It was simple, but it made me think about my care-free (无忧的) life.
There were three fish living in a small river. Their names were Make Plans, Fast Thinker, and Wait and See. One day, they heard a fisherman saying that he would cast a net (撒网) into the river in the morning. Make Plans was not worried. At once, he decided to hide and stay away from the danger. Fast Thinker was not worried. He was sure he will have a plan. Wait and See was not worried either. “I will decide what to do in the morning,” he said.
In the morning, the fisherman cast his net. By this time, Make Plans was far away, but the other two fish were caught. Fast Thinker pretended (假装) to be dead. One day, as two little boys were walking along the road, they passed a woman carrying a large basket of apples.
The boys thought the woman looked very pale and tired, so they said, “Are you going to town? If you are, we will carry your basket.”“ Thank you,” replied the woman. Then she told them that she had a disabled son. She lived in a small house three miles away, and was now going to the market to sell the apples which grew on the only tree in her little garden. She needed the money for their living.
“ We are going the same way you are,” said the boys and they took hold of the basket, one on each side, and trudged along with merry hearts. The poor woman looked glad, and said that she hoped their mother would not be angry with them. “Oh, no,” they replied, “our mother has taught us to be kind to others, and to be useful in any way that we can.”
The woman then offered to give them a few apples for their help. “No, thank you, we want nothing for what we have done.” said the boys. When the woman got home, she told her son what had happened on the road, and they were both made happier that day by the kindness of the two boys.
Another day, the woman saw his son stop and pick up a piece of orange peel, which he threw into the dustbin, “I wish people would not throw orange peel on the sidewalk, ” said the son. “Someone may walk upon it, and fall.” “That is right, my dear,” she said. “It is a little thing for you to what you have done, but it shows that you’re thoughtful and considerate.”
