While there are many different stories of how the lion dance began, one story traces back to a village in China hundreds of years ago. The story says that the villagers were attacked by a monster (怪兽) called Nian. A lion scared the Nian away. But a year later, the Nian returned, and this time the lion was unable to help. So the villagers created the lion costurne of their own. The fake (假的) lion danced, and scared the Nian away. For this reason, people perform the lion dance on the night before the Chinese New Year.

There are two different styles of the lion dance. In a southern lion dance, the dancers base their performance on a lion’s behavior. The lion may scratch (挠) or shake its body. The dance can be funny. The other style is the northern lion dance. This style is closely related to the martial art. It includes rolling and jumping. Both styles require skill and practice to perform. And both are very interesting to watch!

We call Chinese New Year the Spring Festival. There is a name for each Chinese year. We may name it the year of Pig, the year of Tiger or the year of Dog. And 2023 is the year of Rabbit.
