There is a traditional toy called taiping nijiaojiao. It is a clay toy and also a whistle (哨子) in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu. It has a history of over 1,000 years.

Taiping nijiaojiao is made of the mud from the local mountain. It takes more than ten steps to make the clay toy, and the key step is to knead (捏) it with your hands. You can knead the clay toy into anything, like animals and plants. The blowhole is the most difficult part to make, for the size of the blowhole makes a difference to the sound. While coloring, you can use traditional cultural elements (元素) that carry good meanings. It’s hard to make taiping nijiaojiao. But when you finally make it, you will feel proud of yourself.

Zhou Baokang, a lover of folk art, learned how to make the clay toy from local artists about 20 years ago. He wants more people to know about it, so he has opened a museum to introduce the clay toy. He teaches kids how to make the clay toy, too.

【推荐1】It happens every night—bedtime. But what if you’re not sleepy? Should you still go to bed if you are just going to lie there with your eyes wide open? It’s a problem that has been around.

There are many reasons why you may not be able to fall asleep. You might be happy with everything you did that day. You might be excited about what you know you’re going to do the next day. Maybe you can’t sleep because you don’t like sleeping all alone in your room. All of these reasons are normal. However, there are some steps you can take to help you fall asleep.

One thing that can help is talking to a parent or another trusted adult about what you’re thinking about at bedtime. For example, if you’re nervous about taking a rest, or upset at school, it can really help to tell somebody.

Sleeping in a comfortable bed in a quiet and cool room is perfect. If there’s anything about your room that makes you feel uncomfortable at night, like a picture that looks strange in the dark, be sure to ask one of your parents to move it away. Making sure electronics are kept away from your bed is also recommended as these things can keep you awake, making it harder for you to fall asleep.

If you are usually restless around bedtime, doing certain things to relax beforehand may help you fall asleep when you go to bed. Try to take more time to relax by taking a warm bath, or listening to a bedtime story at least 30 minutes before you want to go to sleep. It also helps to follow a bedtime routine and go to sleep at the same time every night. As a result, your body will get the message that it’s almost time to sleep. Your body will know to start feeling tired.

In order to find the right solution for you, it’s important that you understand what exactly is keeping you up at night. 【推荐3】Do you remember where you were when you heard about that your close friends were injured in a traffic accident? The answer is probably yes. Do you remember what you were doing on your birthday that year? You may have to think a little harder.

People remember bad memories more easily and in greater detail(细节)than good ones. Why is that? A new study found that people do this because of evolutionary(进化的)reasons. Elizabeth Lee and her workers at Boston College, US, did a study looking at this. They found negative(反面的)feelings like fear and sadness cause an increase in brain activity. This activity happens in the part of the brain that control memories. So memories caused by negative feelings are kept in greater detail than other kinds of memories. For example, after seeing a man on a street holding a knife, people remember the knife clearly, but they forget the details of the street.

According to Elizabeth Lee, it is easy to understand this from an evolutionary point of view. She said that people pay attention to dangerous information so they can use that information to guide their actions and save their lives. They can also use it to plan for similar events in the future.

The scientists say more studies are needed on how we remember bad memories. This line of research could help solve stress disorders(应激障碍).
