You may know the English letters A, B, C, but do you know there are people called “ABC”? You may like eating bananas, but do you know there are people called “banana people”? If you don’t know, I will tell you about them. They are some Chinese people like you and me, but they aren’t in China. Why do people call them like that?

If we call somebody an “ABC”, we mean he or she is a Chinese person but was born in America. Sometimes, people also call them “banana people”. A banana is yellow outside and white inside. So if somebody is a “banana person”, he or she is “white” inside and “yellow” outside. By saying that, we mean he or she has yellow skin (皮肤) but does things in an American way. “Banana people” were born in America and they live in America for a long time, so they think like Americans and do things like Americans. However, these people still have Chinese blood (血统). Their parents, grandparents, or even great-grandparents are from China. They all have black eyes and black hair, so they look like us, Chinese people.

There are many famous “banana people” in America. They do very well in America and they are really great in their own fields.

Tasty bananas are hard to turn down. They taste good and you don’t have to wash them before eating them. However, British scientists say that the fruit may disappear by 2050.

One reason for this is climate(气候) change. Scientists at the University of Exeter collected data from 27 countries that produce 86 percent of the world’s bananas. They found that climate change has improved growing conditions in 21 of these countries. For the past 60 years, the annual yields(年均产量) have been increasing by 1.37 tonnes(公吨) bananas per hectare. In this way, if temperatures rises all the time, this advantage will disappear. Ten of the countries, including India, the world’s biggest producer of bananas, will produce fewer bananas. By 2050, the fruit may die out.

Shouldn’t banana plants grow more easily if it’s hotter outside? In fact, the perfect temperature for growing banana plants is between 24°C and 32°C. If temperatures get too high, they will stop growing.

Diseases are another danger to banana plants. Unlike other crops, the banana plants we grow come from shoot cuttings(茎段) rather than seeds(种子). This shows that all banana plants have the same genotype(基因型). In other words, if a disease is able to kill one plant, it could kill them all.

For example, one serious disease is called Panama. Caused by fungi(真菌) in the soil, it spreads easily. It has spread across South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia. If one banana plantation(种植园) suffers from the disease, it will take 30 years until it is able to grow banana plants again. Scientists have to find a cure for this disease.

There are 24 solar terms (节气) in China, and the Grain Rain(谷雨) is one of them. It falls on April 19 this year.
This solar term is called the Grain Rain because it is known for “rain” that helps the grain grow. From its name, we can guess it means a time of more rain. So if you go out in the next two weeks, you may need to bring an umbrella with you.
But this is a great time for planting crops. If you miss the time for planting during the Grain Rain, you will feel sorry later. So maybe you can try to plant some flowers or vegetables in your garden. When the spring rain falls, farmers begin to grow crops (庄稼). Farmers often say, “Spring rain is as precious (珍贵的) as oil.” It brings farmers hope for a good year ahead.
There are also many interesting customs during the Grain Rain. In the northern part of China, people like to eat Chinese toon (椿芽) mixed with eggs. The food made during the Grain Rain tastes wonderful and is good for your stomach. In the southern part of China, the tea leaves are picked during the time. They are called Grain Rain tea, which is famous for its freshness and sweet smell.

Since the outbreak(爆发)of the pandemic(疫情), it has made its way around the world.

It has a strong influence on our daily life. People have found a way to protect themselves by wearing face masks(口罩). We must wear masks anywhere in public. But the masks are one-time items. This means that we need to discard them after one or two uses. The world has seen wasted masks strewn(散布在)all over the streets and filling up garbage bins(垃圾箱).

Experts have pointed out that the materials used in masks are difficult to degrade(降解). It will take at least 100 years for them to degrade naturally. Environmentalists become quite worried because a countless number of wasted masks have ended up in the sea! They are polluting the sea! The sea animals suffer(遭受)a lot and so do we humans. If the sea animals eat them by mistake, the rubbish will be hard to digest(消化)and stay in their stomachs forever. The bacteria on the masks may kill them too. They will not only largely influence the ecological balance(生态平衡)of the sea, but also can spread some more dangerous illnesses. People will also leave these harmful things in their own bodies and may become ill when eating these sea animals.

In general, the harm of wasted masks to the sea is serious, so we must take action to stop it right now. We should leave them in a safe place and find a wise way to recycle them. Let’s work together to protect the environment.
