The folk art form, kuaiban, which has a long history, can be performed by a group or a single person. With one or two pairs of bamboo clappers—a kind of traditional Chinese musical instrument in their hands, the performers tell stories in the local dialect(方言). These stories are usually folk tales or about social life.
Recently, Liu Jiming and Wan Yifu made and shared three short videos by using kuaiban which were viewed about 4 million times. As a result, Liu and Wan have gained more than 1million followers on the Internet. They’ve created many new works to raise people’s awareness. Some of their works are about the danger of drunken driving and food safety. They also write stories to show respect to people who make contributions, such as traffic policemen.
According to Liu and Wan, people can understand kuaiban pieces without difficulty. The stories told in kuaiban pieces are close to people’s daily lives. Thus, they consider that it is a fun way to introduce the Chinese folk culture through kuaiban. And what matters to them is that both young people and old people begin to know the charm of the art form, kuaiban, which may not be paid much attention to, compared to other traditional art forms.
Folk art forms, like xiangsheng, pingshu and kuaiban, share something in common. These traditional art forms show the beauty and value of traditional Chinese culture so they should be known by more people and get to more areas. Luckily, through the Internet, new performers who go on sharing kuaiban pieces, like Liu and Wan are playing an active role. Hopefully these Chinese folk art forms will be alive with the times.

Kiddles uses the same colors as Google in its logo and a similar design on its homepage, too — with an extra robot picture.
The top three Kiddle search results show safe websites and pages written specially for kids, and those websites and pages are well chosen and checked by Kiddle developers.
The fourth to seventh results will be safe and trusted websites that are not written specially for kids, but have content written in a simple way. These results are also chosen and checked.
Results on the eighth and onwards pages are safe and famous websites that are written for adults. They provide expert content, but are harder for kids to understand.
Unlike on Google, most results appear along with large thumbnail pictures(缩略图)to make it easier for children to find what they are looking for. For example, when searching for "meow meow". Google produces pages for information about a drug(毒品)that has "meow meow" as its nickname(绰号), but Kiddle lists information only about cats, even with some cartoon pictures.
The company explained, "Websites which appear in Kiddle search results satisfy family-friendly requirements, as we filter websites with unhealthy content."

The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms (节气). Start of Autumn/Li Qiu, the 13th solar term of the year, begins this year on August 7th. Although Start of Autumn reflects the end of summer and beginning of autumn, hot weather will not end. The period of hot days after Start of Autumn, usually lasting for 30 days, is called “Autumn Tiger”. The following are some traditions you should know about Start of Autumn.
1. Eating peaches
In Hangzhou, people eat peaches on the Start of Autumn day. The peach stones are kept until New Year’s Eve and thrown into the stove, burned into ash. People believed that in this way, plagues (瘟疫) could be prevented for the whole year.
2. Eating red beans
People in Yiwu, Zhejiang province, have eaten red beans on Start of Autumn day. They take 7 to 14 little beans, swallowing them with well water. When taking the beans, one must face west, it’s said, so as not to get dysentery (痢疾) during the autumn.
3. Eating gourds
People in Tianjing believe that eating melons such as towel gourd, white gourd and bitter gourd can prevent diarrhea (腹泻) in autumn and the coming winter and spring.
4. Touching Autumn
There is the custom of “Touching Autumn” in the north of Yancheng, Jiangsu province. On the eve of Start of Autumn, people can touch and take for free all kinds of fruits as they like in private or public gardens, and the owner will not be angry, no matter how much they lose. Many gardeners even leave some melon fruits in the field on purpose for the guests during the night.
5. Fleshing out in autumn (贴秋膘)
On the first day of the Start of Autumn, usually people will weight themselves and compare their weight to what it was at the Start of Summer. If one has lost weight during the summer, then at the beginning of autumn, he or she needs to flesh out by eating many different kinds of delicious food, especially meat.

The best paper comes from wood. Wood comes from trees, and trees are plants. Vegetables and fruit are plants, too, and we eat a lot of them. So can we also eat wood and paper? Scientists say, “All food comes in some way from plants,” Is that true? Animals eat grass and grow fat. Then we eat them. Little fish eat little sea plants. Then bigger fish swim along and eat them. Think for a minute. What food does not come from plants in some way? Scientists can do wonderful things with plants. They can make plants taste just like meat and cheese. And they can make it without the help of animals. Now they have begun to say, “We make our paper from wood. We can also make food from wood. The next thing is not very difficult.” What is the next thing? Perhaps it is—food from paper. ②So please… and letters. Maybe one day, they will be on your plate, if what scientists say comes true. |

Here in China, workers have longer lunch breaks, which gives them enough time to take a short nap(午睡). Therefore, Chinese people usually use lunchtime to rest. I often see office workers rest their heads on their desks. The room turns into a quiet "bedroom". Once, I even saw workers in a restaurant taking short naps as well. This is also very common for students in China. After lunch, they will go back to their dormitories(宿舍)or classrooms to take a nap. Chinese people believe a short nap at noon can help them feel more energetic(精力充沛的) in the afternoon.
In the UK, this activity is quite uncommon. British students usually have one hour for a lunch break. They don’t nap. Instead, they fill that time by playing sports or talking with friends.
Most workers in the UK don't get the chance to nap. They generally have short lunch breaks-between 30 minutes to an hour. There is not enough time to have a nap. Because of the shortness of their lunch breaks, it is common for people to work through lunch or just finish their lunch at their desk.

Fan Shenghua, 61, is one of the inheritors (传承人) of the Longjing tea roasting technique. His palms tell you everything—they’re thick, rough, and full of calluses (老茧), a reminder of more than 40 years of hard work. You have to touch the leaves with your hands to see how much water should be removed. Fan said, “If too much is removed, the leaves will break into pieces; if not enough is removed, the tea will taste bitter.”
This traditional technique dates back to the Ming and Qing dynasty. It not only ensures the quality of the tea, but also is an important part of Chinese tea culture. “Longjing tea leaves are famous for their color, taste and shape. Only by hand can we make the best of them. It’s like making a work of art.” Fan said.
These days, however, more people are using machines to do the job. “It’s easier, but the quality is not as good,” Fan said. “Machine-made tea floats longer in water and tastes bitter.”
When President Xi Jinping visited Hangzhou, he watched Fan roast tea leaves. Fan changed the strength and movement of his hands as he felt the tea leaves roast. Xi later said, “The things made by two palms cannot be replaced by modern technology?”
Fan is now taking apprentices (学徒). His son, a college graduate, is one of them. “It’s a tradition. We need to pass it down,” said the father.

In 1826, a Frenchman named Niepce needed pictures for his business. But he was not a good artist. So he invented a very simple camera. He put it in a window of his house and took a picture of his garden. That was the first photo.
The next important date in the history of photography was in 1837. That year, Daguerre, another Frenchman, took a picture of his reading room. He used a new kind of camera in a different way. In his picture you could see everything very clearly, even the smallest thing. This kind of photo was called a Daguerreotype.
Soon, other people began to use Daguerre's way. Travelers brought back wonderful photos from all around the world. People took pictures of famous buildings, cities and mountains. In about 1840, photography was developed. Then photographers could take pictures of people and moving things. That was not simple. The photographers had to carry a lot of film and machines. But this did not stop them. For example, some people in the United States worked very hard. Mathew Brady, a famous American photographer, was one of them. He took many pictures of great people. The pictures were unusual because they were very lifelike(栩栩如生). Photography also became one kind of art at the end of the 19th century. Some photos were not just copies of the real world. They showed some feelings, like other kinds of art.

One book in the collection was written by Phillis Wheatley. Wheatley was a slave(奴隶)who wrote poetry. She was the first African American to publish a book. Wheatley herself signed(签名)the book in the Claytons' collection. No one else owns a copy signed by Phillis Wheatley.
By the time she passed away at age 83, Mrs Clayton had more than 30, 000 books by or about black people. Her collection also includes papers about slaves, photos, movies, sheet music, and personal letters by black leaders and artists. It is one of the biggest personal collections of African American history and culture in the United States.
Avery Clayton's dream was to create a museum for his mother's treasures. Scholars say that Mrs Clayton's collection is very important. Without her work, part of African American heritage(遗产)would have been lost. "We didn't know these things existed(存在), a man from California's library says.
The collection's new home is likely to be in Culver City, California. Part of Avery Clayton's dream is to share the cultural riches(财富)his mother collected with others. He especially wants kids to have a chance to see the collection. "At present African American culture is being explained by pop culture,” he says, “It's important to offer a more complete picture. ”

Many people in their twenties say that their lives are almost fixed, even if they have dreams in their hearts, they always give up their dreams because of age and realistic reasons. Grandma Van Gogh, she started painting more than 70 years ago, but she was called "Van Gogh in rural China" by people. She once opened an exhibition in Hong Kong and was invited twice to have an appointment with Lu Yu. "Grandma Van Gogh" never gave up her dream in her mind, and became a farmer for a lifetime. When she was more than 70 years old, she picked up her beloved paintbrush, looked at the idyllic scenery of her life, and wrote into the painting one by one, warming countless people.
"Grandma Van Gogh" was just an ordinary peasant and an ordinary old woman. Many people know the story of "Grandma Van Gogh" and have speculated that she could make such paintings in her 70s, she must have been well educated before, at least when she was young, or "Grand Van Gogh" It was not a farmer in itself, but an educated youth who went to the countryside.
Not as netizens guess, "Grandma Van Gogh" is really an ordinary peasant. Why did she start to contact paintings was mainly because she described to her granddaughter living in the city how beautiful her village was, and how cute it was. Maybe she was with deep nostalgia for the hometown, when creating the painting, "Grandma Van Gogh" was like painting the body of God.

Hi! I’m the Beijing-Zhangjiakou railway (铁路), I’ve felt happy recently because a new high-speed railway now links (连接) the two cities. Do you want to know my story?
I was born in 1909. I’m 114 years old now. The one who made me was Zhan Tianyou. He was a brave and smart man. He believed China should build its own railways without other countries’ help. So he built me, China’s first self-built railway.
At first, my trains used steam (蒸汽) and they were very slow. Their top speed was only 35 km/h. Then, the trains started to use diesel (柴油). Later, there were even better trains which used electricity (电). But it still took more than three hours to travel from Beijing to Zhangjiakou Hebei.
In 2020, the new high-speed railway opened on Dec 30. I was so excited. It will help people travel more faster. The high-speed train has a top speed of 350 km/h! It only takes 47 minutes to travel from Beijing to Zhangjiakou.
During the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Beijing and Zhangjiakou, the two host cities of the event, welcomed lots of people from around the world.
I’m too old to keep working these days, but people will keep me as part of history. It’s a little sad. But I’m still proud (骄傲的) of all the changes China has made. Zhan Tianyou must be proud too.
1. When was the Beijing-Zhangjiakou railway built?2. How does the speed of trains change?
3. Was Zhan Tianyou a patriot (爱国者)? Why?
4. How long does it take if we travel from Beijing to Zhangjiakou by high-speed trains?

Few people would disagree that email makes our lives easier. But misusing email can cause problems. Answering all those emails and processing all that information can overload(使负荷过)the brain, causing stress. So says the Future Work Center, a business based in London. This company carries out psychological (心理的) )research on people’s experiences in their workplaces.
Dr Richand Memnon at the center was the lead author of a report on messaging habits. He calls email a double-edged sword: Emails provide a useful way to communicate, but they could add to tension(紧张情绪) in the mind, causing stress. Come rain or shine(无论如何),some office workers are under pressure to read and answer emails all day long. Psychologists care about the pressure that workers bring on themselves. Dr. Mackinnon says that while email can be a valuable, time-saving communication tool, it can also be a source of stress and even anger for many of us. He adds that the stress does not come from the number of emails you get. The problems result from when and how you deal with them.
According to the study, leaving email on all day and never signing off(签收), along with reading and answering emails early in the day and late at night, are what makes email stressful. Dr. MacKinnon says these bad email habits are linked to higher levels of stress in office workers. The report gives several suggestions on avoiding emails stress.
Use email with a plan. Do not just react to endless email. If you use email application, or app, close it down when you want to be left alone.
If you need to communicate with a co-worker, call or better still walk to their office and talk about it.
Be careful with the “ reply all” option. For example, if you are accepting an invitation to attend training, just write back to those who need to know. Trust me. Other workers on that mailing list will thank you.
And accept the fact that if a matter is urgent, employers will call you about it. Email is certainly not going anywhere, so it is important to take control of your emails and not the other way around.
