Chinatown is the name of an area (地区) in the middle of London. It is a large Chinese community (社区) with a lot of Chinese restaurants, Chinese supermarkets and shops.
In the 1950s, it was a poor area. Everything was very cheap. At the same time, the world rice market became bad and thousands of farm workers in Hong Kong lost their jobs. They began going to London to look for work. They found jobs in the restaurants in this area.
These restaurant workers often worked 17 hours a day and had no time to learn English. As more Chinese arrived, more shops and businesses grew up. Women came to join their husbands and children came to join their fathers. The community grew, and Chinatown was born.
In the 1970s and 1980s, British-born Chinese started to have a better education (教育) and this brought economic success to the area. Many families moved out of Chinatown, and there was more space for businesses. Chinatown soon became a popular place for tourists.

China’s first Mars rover (火星巡视器), Zhurong, drove down to the Martian surface at 10:40 a.m. (Beijing Time), May 22 and started exploring (探索), leaving the first mark of China on the red planet. It marched 0.522 meters on the surface of Mars to mark the important date.
Zhurong looks like a beautiful blue butterfly (蝴蝶). It is 3.3 meters long, 3.2 meters wide and 1.85 meters high. It has a three-Martian day cycle: first day for environmental perception (感知环境), second day for movement, and the last for scientific exploration.
Because of the bad Martian environment, Zhurong can work only one to two hours each time. It has to face a number of difficulties in order to work on Mars, such as the bad sunlight, low temperature, bad Earth-Mars communication and sand storms. For example, Zhurong cannot be controlled in real time. That makes its communication with the Earth really hard. The temperature on Mars falls below -130℃ a night. It’s also a huge challenge for Zhurong. What’s more, the wind on Mars could reach 180 meters a second, which is more than three times faster than a super typhoon (台风) on Earth. Such winds could start huge sand storms. These sand storms make Zhurong’s work harder. To deal with these difficulties, Zhurong works by itself for most of the time.

3. What is the size of Zhurong?
4. To work on Mars, what four difficulties does Zhurong have to face?

The Japanese are very good at recycling because they live in a very small place with a lot of people in it. They do not want to share that small amount of space with rubbish. But even so, the Tokyo area alone is thought to have three million tons of rubbish right now.
In Japan, some cities give children recycled paper in return for collecting newspapers for recycling.
In Rockford, a city in Illinois, U.S., the government chooses one house each week and checks its rubbish. If the rubbish does not have any newspapers or mental drink cans, then that house gets a prize of at last ﹩1,000. In one year British recycling
·1 out of every 3 newspapers
·1 out of every 4 glass bottles and jars
·1 out of every 4 shirts, trousers and other types of clothes.
In China, Hong Kong transported 1.3 million tons of rubbish to the mainland for recycling in 1999. And around 535,000 tons of rubbish were recycled in Hong Kong of China itself.
Over half the things we throw away could be recycled. That means we could recycle 10 times as much as we do now.
However, recycling needs a lot of planning and special machines. Also, there is not much use for some recycled things. People need to think of more ways to use things they recycle.
1. According to the passage, what can be recycled?(give two examples)2. Why are the Japanese good at recycling?
3. Where can people get a big prize if they do well in recycling?
4. Which things get recycled most in Britain?
