How do you feel about nature? After spending hours indoors, do you feel better when you visit your local park? Most people think that nature is good for our bodies and brains. However, humans are spending more time inside and less time outside. For example, the number of visitors to Canada’s national parks is getting lower every year. And in countries such as the USA, only 10% of teenagers spend time outside every day. Many doctors feel that this is a problem in the twenty-first century.
As a result, some doctors are studying the connection between nature and health: one example of this is the work of Dr Matilda in Sweden. The doctor gave people a maths test. During the test, their heart rates (心率) were fast. After the test, one group of people sat in a 3D-virtual-reality (虚拟现实) room for fifteen minutes with pictures and sounds of nature. Their heart rates were slower than people’s in the other group.
The virtual touch with nature helped them feel more relaxed. Another good example of how nature is good for health comes from Canada. In Toronto, researchers studied 31,000 people living in the city. In general, they found that healthier people lived near parks.
Because of studies like these, some countries and cities want nature to be part of people’s everyday life. In Dubai (迪拜), for example, there are plans for a new shopping mall with a large garden so shoppers can relax outside with trees, plants and water. In Switzerland, “forest schools” are popular. Schoolchildren study their subjects in the forests and do lots of exercise outside. And South Korea (韩国) is another good example: it has new forests near its cities and around 13 million people visit these forests every year. So after building cities for so long, perhaps it’s now time to start rebuilding nature.

Animals in the wild must be very clever and quick to stay safe from danger. Just like you play hide and seek (捉迷藏), animals have their own ways of hiding and staying away from things that might hurt them. Their ears, noses, and eyes are all super important for sensing danger around them.
Some animals, like rabbits, have big ears that can hear really well, so they can listen for any sounds that might mean trouble. Also, their eyes are on the sides of their heads, letting them see around without having to turn their heads.
Animals like chameleons can change their color to hide from predators (捕食者) by looking very much like the trees and leaves they live in. Imagine being able to turn the color of the wall in your room to hide during hide and seek!
When some animals feel scared (恐惧的), they try to look big and scary, like porcupines who make their spikes (刺) stand up. Some animals, like opossums, even act asleep or don’t move so that a predator will think they are dead and not fun to eat and leave them alone.
When in groups, animals help each other out. Meerkats, for example, have one friend watch out for danger while the others look for food. In this way, there are always extra (额外的) eyes looking for safety.
By using their bodies and working together, animals have smart ways to stay safe in the wild!

Mold can grow on almost all kinds of food. It is usually green, white, black or gray. Mold makes food soft and changes its color. Mold food tastes quite bad, and it’s not safe to eat.
If you find mold in soft food, just throw it away. Soft food, such as bread, tomatoes or hot dogs, usually contains water. This allows mold to easily grow. Bacteria (细菌) can also grow along with it.
But it’s easy to remove mold from hard food. The mold can’t grow very deep in this kind of food. You should cut about 2.5 cm around and below the mold to remove it. It’s OK to cut the mold parts out of hard food and eat the rest. But if the food is covered with mold all over, you should still throw it away.

When we finish reading a newspaper, the paper will become waste. When TV sets or computers are broken, they will become electronic waste.
Plastic bags are often used in our everyday life. The number of used plastic bags is increasing day by day. We like to use plastic bags because they are convenient. When we get home, we throw the plastics away. These are called “white pollution” as most plastics are white. Rubber is also common in our daily life. Many of our products are made of rubber, just like the tyres (轮胎) and the bottom part of our shoes. It’s true that rubber plays an important role in our life. However, it also brings us some trouble when it has been used for a long time. The old rubber pollutes environment very badly because it can’t break down easily in nature — it will stay unchanged for a long time. This is really a big problem all over the world.
Everyone should play a part in saving our world. For example, when we go shopping, we can bring cloth bags instead of plastic ones. And we should do something to recycle rubber. Our small actions can make a difference and lead to a better future.
1. Why do we like to use plastic bags?A.Because they are very light. | B.Because they are always used. |
C.Because they are convenient. | D.Because they are used several times. |

Sometimes, using hand gestures can be more informative and convenient than using words, especially when you can’t speak someone else’s language. But before you head out into the world using the hand gestures you already know, you may want to do some research first to find out what signs are acceptable — and where.
V for Victory?
In Asia, "V" stands for victory. But in Western countries, it can mean peace, too. When you make the sign, be sure to have the front of your palm facing outward. Showing people the back of your hand is an impolite gesture in the UK.
L for Loser.
The letter "L", made with your thumb and index finger, stands for "Loser" and is an insult. So it’s best to avoid making this sign.
Blah-blah-blah!
This gesture looks like a talking mouth. It is often used to describe someone who is talking too much and doing too little. It’s also a little rude.
Fingers Crossed.
Crossing the index and middle fingers is used to wish for good luck. Students might make this sign before an exam. Of course, it doesn’t actually help!
ILY Sign.
This really nice hand gesture is from American Sign Language. It combines the letters "I" "L" and "Y" to mean "I love you".
Counting with Fingers.
And finally, for the most useful signs — how to count the numbers from one to ten. Notice how English-speaking countries use both hands instead of one. So the next time you go to a market in the US, remember to use these signs to bargain.
1. How many gestures are mentioned in the passage?A.3. | B.4. | C.5. | D.6. |
A.B lah-blah-blah. | B.Fingers Crossed. | C.ILY Sign. | D.Counting with Fingers. |
A.ictory | B.peace | C.polite | D.rude |
A.V | B.Counting with Fingers | C.Fingers Crossed | D.L |
5. According to the passage, which is TRUE?
A.It’s best to avoid making "L" sign because it is an insult. |
B.Crossing the index and your thumb fingers is used to wish for good luck. |
C.ILY Sign is often used to describe someone who is talking too much and doing too little. |
D.You can make "V" gesture anywhere because it always stands for victory. |

Sometimes one living thing kills another, one eats and the other is eaten. Each kind of life eats another kind of life in order to live, and together they form a food chain (事物链). Some food chains are simple, while others are not. But all food chains begin with the sun, and all food chains become broken up if one of the links (连环) disappears (消失).
All life needs sunlight to live on. But only plants can use sunlight directly. Plants are “factories”. They make food from sunlight, water and things in the soil and air.
Plants feed all other living things. Animals can only use the sun’s energy (能量) after it has been changed into food by plants. Some animals feed directly on plants, others eat smaller animals. Meat-eating animals are only eating plants indirectly.
What about human beings? We are members of many food chains. We eat wheat, rice, vegetables, and fruits and so on. We also eat meat and drink milk. But men often break up the food chains. They kill wild animals. They also make rivers, lakes and seas dirty. When these rivers, lakes, and seas are polluted, the fish in them can not be eaten. If men eat the fish, they will get strange diseases. Each form of life is linked to all others. Breaking the links puts all life in danger
