Having joined in volunteer work for _______ 30 days to help fight the novel coronavirus epidemic in Wuhan, the epicenter of the epidemic in Hubei province, Hua Yuchen believes she has made the right _______.

The music teacher at Ganghua Elementary School in Wuhan has been filling in where help is most needed. She transported medical staff workers to and from work; she _______ temperatures of drivers at toll stations; she unloaded protective materials and served ________ a broadcaster at a makeshift hospital.

“In our team, everyone is contributing silently. There’s always someone who arrives earlier than I, does more work and leaves later,” said Hua. “The volunteers are passing _______ and responsibility around. I feel positive and energetic when working with them.”

Hua was often moved by medical workers. “When I take them to work, they always check if my protection is done _______. Some leave me masks, small bottles of ethyl alcohol, snacks, fruits and yoghurt. You can feel their gratitude through these small things,” she said.

“We are normal people. ________ can say they are not afraid and are sure that they _______ be infected. But the volunteers are _______ to stand up and do what they can. These may not be big _______, but it is the little deeds that makes you feel warm,” Hua said.

My husband Shane and I were hanging out on the street one evening. I was talking but he was looking over at someone.

He walked over to a young girl who was crying. As he talked to her, I could see from his body language that he was trying to calm her down. When I joined them, I realized that she had been homeless for some time. She told Shane that all she wanted was to go to her sister’s house in another city.

Some people would have handed her some money, offered her lunch or maybe allowed her to make a call. Shane did much more. He said, “Kelly, I can’t leave her here like this. Sometimes people need someone not only to help them but to believe they’re telling the truth.”

It was a bit cold, so we had an idea to take her home. When I asked her if she’d like to go home with us, she thanked me about a million times with tears in her eyes.

We went home and I gave her some clean clothes to wear and told her she could use the shower. We ate something. Finally, she told us her story.

In the morning she was finally able to get hold of her sister, so she had a place to go. Shane drove her to the bus station and bought her a ticket. 

Sometimes what people need is not just money, but people who will trust, listen to and understand them.

How do you feel about nature? After spending hours indoors, do you feel better when you visit your local park? Most people think that nature is good for our bodies and brains. However, humans are spending more time inside and less time outside. For example, the number of visitors to Canada’s national parks is getting lower every year. And in countries such as the USA, only 10% of teenagers spend time outside every day. Many doctors feel that this is a problem in the twenty-first century.

As a result, some doctors are studying the connection between nature and health: one example of this is the work of Dr Matilda in Sweden. The doctor gave people a maths test. During the test, their heart rates (心率) were fast. After the test, one group of people sat in a 3D-virtual-reality (虚拟现实) room for fifteen minutes with pictures and sounds of nature. Their heart rates were slower than people’s in the other group.

The virtual touch with nature helped them feel more relaxed. Another good example of how nature is good for health comes from Canada. In Toronto, researchers studied 31,000 people living in the city. In general, they found that healthier people lived near parks.

Because of studies like these, some countries and cities want nature to be part of people’s everyday life. In Dubai (迪拜), for example, there are plans for a new shopping mall with a large garden so shoppers can relax outside with trees, plants and water. In Switzerland, “forest schools” are popular. Schoolchildren study their subjects in the forests and do lots of exercise outside. And South Korea (韩国) is another good example: it has new forests near its cities and around 13 million people visit these forests every year. So after building cities for so long, perhaps it’s now time to start rebuilding nature.

Imagine sitting in a boat in the ocean. The sky is blue, the sun is out, and the water is clear. Suddenly, you notice something moving in the water, so you stand up to get a closer look.     41     And it’s a fast swimmer. It jumps out of the water and then it’s gone. You’ve Just seen an orca (虎鲸)!

Orcas, also called killer whales, live in every ocean on Earth.     42     Firstly, orcas are not really whales. They’re in fact the largest member of the dolphin (海豚) family. Secondly, they are usually harmless (无害的) to humans.

Orcas are quite playful. They live in groups called “pods”, with between 5 and 30 orcas, for their whole lives.     43     The orcas’ friendly nature is very useful for finding food. Orcas hunt (猎食) in their pods and then work together to kill.

There are about 40 orcas in aquariums(水族馆) all over the world.     44     The most famous orca, Keiko, who appeared in the film Free willy, was in an aquarium. Later scientists tried to help him go back to the wild. They were successful. Keiko became much healthier when he was moved from the aquarium to the sea. However, Keiko liked humans more than other orcas.    45    

For many people around the world, the third Sunday in June is a day to respect their fathers. It is Father's Day and     56    （celebrate）Father's important role in the family.
