Friendship is so important that, in 2011, the United Nations decided to make a special day for it! The International Day of Friendship takes place on 30 July every year. The idea is that friendship between different groups of people, countries and cultures can help us live more peacefully together.

Friendship Days around the world

The International Day of Friendship on 30 July is not the only day celebrating friendship around the world.     4     For example, Argentina, Brazil and Spain celebrate Friend’s Day on 20 July, and in India and the USA, they celebrate it on the first Sunday in August. In Finland and Estonia, people celebrate Friendship Day on the same day as Valentine’s Day, 14 February.

The main purpose of the International Day of Friendship is to show your friends that you care about them and that you value their friendship. You could make a card or write a note telling them why they’re such a great friend. Whatever you do on this day, it’s a time to have fun and celebrate with friends, and perhaps make some new ones! “Asian elephants often stay in one place. We seldom see them travel such a long way,”said Chen Mingyong, a teacher at Yunnan University.

Scientists are still not sure why they are doing this. Some believe it’s because they are looking for better food. According to Zhao Huaidong from the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the number of Asian elephants is going up because of human protection efforts（努力）. So their old homes may not have enough food for them. At the same time, the crops（庄稼）, vegetables and fruit that people grow also make elephants more interested.

Another reason（原因）, according to Chen, is that they have lost their way.

The Air Hollywood K9 Flight School is one place where such help can be found. The school has a piece of equipment（设备） that provides the sights, sounds and even the feel of an airplane in flight. Dog trainers say training is based on a simple rule: preparation. Dogs need to be trained gradually to the environment, to loud noises, to sounds and other dogs so that when this experience happens to them on a daily basis, they're able to act in a way that they're used to acting and that they don't get excitable. Dog owners who attended the training at Air Hollywood K9 Flight School say they now feel much more at ease about future flights . Their dogs also seem ready for take—off.
