Have you ever heard Gaoshan Liushui, a Chinese traditional piece of music? Do you know why Gaoshan Liushui is often played in many occasions (场合)? It has something to do with “zhiyin” culture, which values close friendship. Do you know the story behind it? It’s the story of Yu Boya and Zhong Ziqi in the Warring States Period.
Boya was good at playing the guqin. One day, he was playing music on his way home on the boat, To Boya’s surprise, Ziqi, a woodcutter who happened to pass by, could understand exactly what he wanted to express through his music. After a long talk, they became good friends. Since Boya had to return to his state, they agreed to meet again in the following year.
Unluckily, when getting back to visit Ziqi, Boya heard that his friend had died from an illness. Boya was so sad. In front of Ziqi’s tomb (墓), he played again the music he had played when they first met. The feeling of the music was so strong that it was as if the rivers and the mountains were crying. When finishing playing, Boya broke his guqin into pieces. From then on, Boya never played again. But the famous music piece Gaoshan Liushui he played for his friend has been passed down.
“Zhiyin” culture has new development in the new period. And Gaoshan Liushui is performed in many important occasions. The musical performance not only shows the beauty of Chinese traditional culture, but also expresses China’s willingness to develop its friendship with people from around the world.

But here is what scientists found recently: people’s music tastes change as they age, according to a study published in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. So it’s likely that your own musical preference will follow a similar path to your parents’, whether you like it or not.
Researchers at the University of Cambridge, UK, collected data(资料) from more than 250,000 people over the past 10 years. They noticed that as people age, their social circumstances(环境) change, and so does their music taste.
There are three musical periods that people pass through as they grow.
The first period comes in the teenage years, during which time people like punk and rock because teenagers want people to regard them as independent individuals(个体).
But as people move into early adulthood, their lifestyle changes—they get to know more people and want to build close relationships with others. As a result, they prefer pop and R&B, which are often played at parties where people hang out together and chat.
When middle age comes, people like to listen to jazz and classical. They also like country, folk, and blues.
“During this period of life, many people often feel tired because of their work and family, and there is a requirement for relaxing and emotive(动情的) music,” said Jason Rentfrow, a research member.
But you must be thinking: “Aren’t there old people who still love rock music?” Of course there are. But Rentfrow explained that their reasons for listening to rock music may have changed. “We use music for different reasons,” he said, and at that age people may listen to remind themselves of their youths.

Sima Qian, an official (官员) during the Western Han Dynasty (206BC—AD24) wrote it. The work records the events (事件) beginning with the famous Yellow Emperor and ending with the first years of the Han Wudi period, covering around 3,000 years.
In this book, I really like how the writer describes different people. For example, there’s Da Yu, the founder of the Xia Dynasty. He tried so hard to stop a big flood (洪水) that he refused to enter his home while passing by three times. I hope to be a great person like Da Yu.
There are also two famous farmers, Chen Sheng and Wu Guang. They led a group of people against the Qin Dynasty and led the way for the Han Dynasty. Their story shows that every human, what ever their birth, can become something great if he tried his best.
When I read this book, I could see how Sima Qian made the characters (人物) come alive with his words. This makes the book full of strong feelings of love and hate, and I love the stories.

Over time the rich man saw that Zheng He was very clever and strong and they became close friends. In 1403, Zhu Di was made the King of China and he asked Zheng He to join his new government.

Learning the hard way
My mother used to say things just to make me mad. Like most teenagers, I thought I knew everything. And what I didn’t know, I didn’t want to be told. For example, if I said I was going to a movie, my mother would roll her eyes. On my way out, she’d shout: “You need to slow yourself down before something bad happens! You don’t want to learn that the hard way!” I didn’t know what that meant. I thought she just wanted me to stay home.
Many years later I had three teenagers of my own. They thought they knew everything. I would say the same things to them like my mom. That’s when I first saw it. My mother wasn’t trying to make me stay at home. She was trying to help me.
Why do we always have to learn things “the hard way”? Why can’t we just accept our elders’ wisdom? It’s a good lesson for anyone. Obviously, I still haven’t learned it.
Yesterday, I stepped out of the shower when I heard my cell phone ringing in the kitchen. Grabbing a towel, I ran through the house. I grabbed the phone and hit my left foot against the table. The X-ray showed that I’d broken two toes.
We all need to slow ourselves down once in a while, before something bad does it for us. My mother was right about a lot of things. I wish I could have told her.
