①Otters (水獭) are cute water animals. Recently, there has been a trend (趋势) of keeping them as pets. In Japan, some “otter cafes” are open for business. People can pay to play with the otters there and to take photos with them. In Indonesia, people go swimming with their pet otters and take “funny” videos. These photos and videos posted online have attracted more people to buy otters as pets.
②However, these photos and videos mask the fact that the online trade is doing harm to otters. In the wild, baby otters usually stay with their mothers during their first year of life. According to a report, 70 percent of otters sold online are under a year old. These baby otters have been stolen from their mothers. When they’re kept as pets by humans, they do not live full, natural lives.
③Otters are very social (群居的). They live in family groups of up to fifteen in the wild. Keeping an otter as a pet can make it very sad and lonely. These animals also need enough space to swim. Their owners’ bathtubs (浴缸) or pools are much smaller than the bodies of water in the wild.
④On the other hand, it is not wise to keep otters as pets at home. They have a very special fishy smell. If they’re kept indoors, they will leave a lot of droppings around the house. This would make the smell even more unpleasant. Besides, when otters are upset, they will make loud noises and even attack (攻击) people. If a person is bitten by an otter, he or she needs to go to the hospital immediately.
⑤So, what can we do to stop the otter pet trade? Well, one of the main ways is to let more people know that otters should not be kept as pets. We should also keep an eye on online posts about these animals. When photos and videos show baby otters being kept or sold as pets, don’t share them.

Love was first found on April 24th 2018, when Li Zengming, a farmer, drove past a reservoir in the countryside of Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi Province. Seeing it trying to fly but falling again and again, Li thought that it might be hurt. He drove to the shore and went into the water to rescue it. “I saw the white crane with dull eyes and a weak body. It was probably hurt. If I let it alone, it would be in danger,” Li recalled. After more than half an hour, Li finally took the white crane back to the shore.
Then he called his uncle, an experienced animal saver. for help. “Come over immediately and let’s send it to the police station right away” said his uncle. When seeing the weak wild crane, Jiang Qingchun from the Five-Star Police Station, put down his work and checked it carefully.
“At the end of April, migratory (迁移的) birds usually return to the north. It's abnormal for a white crane to still be living nearby. It may be left behind because of its poor health.” Jiang said. He contacted Wang at the Jiangxi Academy of Forestry for help. Wang's team found Love did not seem to be hurt or have illness, but it suffered from hunger and tiredness. After five days' treatment, its weight rose from 3.75kg to 4kg.
Being kept for long will be bad for birds' ability to survive in the wild. Wang's team decided on May 2nd to set it free at a place in northern China so that it could join the migrating group heading for Siberia in Russia. On May 8th, Love was set free at the Momoge National Nature Reserve.

It turns out that mosquitoes do have preferences, but it isn’t tasty blood that attracts them to their target. It’s all about how easily a person is to be found. Mosquito researcher Susan Paskewitz explains that “the main things are how you smell and how warm you are.”
When you exercise outdoors or go out in the heat of the day, your body temperature rises and lactic acid is produced. Mosquitoes are attracted to warmer bodies and to the smell of lactic acid, according to Smithsonian Magazine, so you are more likely to get bitten after a soccer match or a warm day in the playground.
When we breathe, we naturally breathe out CO2, which signals to mosquitoes that it’s dinnertime. John Edman, a scientist who studies insects, said that mosquitoes can smell CO2 from up to 100 feet away. The mixture of sweat, body heat, and short breaths after an energetic game is enough to send a mosquito over you for a snack.
Even your dressing style can affect whether or not you get bitten. Mosquitoes use colors to decide where to land, and they prefer dark colors. Wearing dark clothing or hanging out against a lighter background, like the grass, is a good way to turn yourself into a large target for mosquitoes. Wear white clothing, and they might fly right by.

Or can they? A new TV show gives us a new look at plants. Shown on Jan. 10 on Bilibili, it tells the secret lives of plants, and the wonderful and unbelievable ways that plants work.
Plants compete against each other to live. In the rainforests, different kinds of plants race for sunlight. The forest floor is described as a “battlefield”. Only two percent of the sunlight gets through it. Some plants spread their big leaves to reach light. But other plants may catch them up and get a lift. Finally, they are both overtaken (超过) by a fast-growing tree. Similarly, some trees may give out something to protect themselves.
Plants also help each other and even communicate. In deserts, if a tree finds water, it will share it with others. Studies also show that plants use fungus (真菌) in the soil as a way to “talk” to each other. It’s kind of like how Wi-Fi works. If a tomato plant gets a leaf disease, it can tell nearby plants about it.
The TV show not only makes us amazed at the plant world but pushes us to understand that plants are important. “Plants are the needs of all life, including ourselves. We depend upon them for every mouth of food that we eat and every lungful of air that we breathe.”, said David, the director of the show. It’s time to look after wild plants just as carefully as our houseplants.

According to the Sleep Council, "junk sleep" could compete with eating unhealthy junk food as a main worrying lifestyle for parents of teenage children.
Among the l, 000 students aged 12 to 16 who were tested in the survey, 30 percent just slept for 4 to 7 hours a day. Almost a quarter said they fell asleep, more than once a week, while watching TV, listening to music or using other electronic gadgets.
"This is a quite worrying trend(潮流)”, said Dr Chris Idzikowski of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre. "What we are seeing is the appearance of terrible junk sleep - sleep that is of neither the length(长度) nor the quality it should be."
Nearly each of the teenagers had a phone, music system or TV in his or her bedroom, with around two-thirds owning all three. Almost one in five of the teenage boys said the quality of their sleep had been influenced by leaving their TVs or computers on. The survey also found that 40 percent of youngsters felt tired each day, with girls aged 15 to 16 feeling the worst.

The app, called SocialRecall, connects names with faces through smartphone cameras and facial recognition (识别), avoiding the need for formal introductions. "It breaks down these social barriers we all have when meeting somebody," says Barry Sandrew, who created the app and tested it at an event attended by about 1,000 people.
After receiving an invitation to download SocialRecall from an event organizer, the user is asked to take two selfies and sign in through social media. At the event, the app is active within a previously set geographical area. When a user points his or her phone camera at an attendee's face, the app identifies (识别) the person, displays the person's name, and links to his or her social media information. To protect Privacy (隐私), it recognizes only those who have agreed to use. And the app's creators say it automatically removes users' data after an event.
Ann Cavoukian, an expert who runs the Privacy by Design Center of Excellence praises the app's creators for these protective measures. She added, however, that when people choose to share their personal information with the app, they should know that "there may be unexpected results down the road with that information being used in another situation that might come back to bite you."
The start-up project has developed the app for people who suffer from prosopagnosia, or "face blindness," a condition that prevents people from recognizing people they have met. To use this app, a person first receives an image of someone's face, from either the smartphone's camera or a photograph, and then tags it with a name. When the camera spots or recognizes that same face in real life, the previously entered information is displayed. The collected data are stored only on a user's phone, according to the team behind the app.
