I was on the train one afternoon. Our carriage was almost empty, just a few people.
At one station, a drunk man suddenly entered the train. He shouted and swung his fists at a woman holding a baby. Luckily, the baby wasn’t hurt. Then he tried to kick an old woman. Everyone was scared.
I’ve been learning aikido (合气道,功夫的一种)for the past three years. But I’d never fought in real life. As students of aikido, we are not allowed to start a fight. “Aikido, ”my teacher always told us, “is about solving conflict(冲突), not starting it. ”
I decided that this was my moment. If I didn’t do something fast, somebody might get hurt. So I stood up, ready to fight.
Just then someone shouted, “Hey!” It was an old man. He was smiling at the drunk man. “What have you been drinking?” he asked.
“I’ve been drinking wine, but it’s none of your business!” said the drunk man angrily.
“Oh, that’s wonderful!” said the old man. Then he told how he loved drinking wine with his wife and eating watermelon.
“And I also love watermelon.” said the drunk man.
“And I’m sure you have a wonderful wife too.” said the old man.
“No,” replied the drunk man. “My wife died.” Then he began to sob(啜泣). “I have no wife, no home, no job. I am so ashamed of my myself.” “Oh, that’s so difficult. Sit down here and tell me about it. ” said the old man.
As I got off the train, I realized I’d just seen real aikido in action. This was the real spirit of how to solve conflict.

Later, one or my sons went to Canada’s east coast (海岸) near a city called Halifax and the other moved to the west coast to Vancouver. My wife and I were left in the middle.
As we nearly retired (退休), we started to think where we should spend our final years. We decided to live in a small town on Vancouver Island, where was close to one of my sons. However, the son moved to Hollywood soon after he had got another job there. I helped him move.
We still lived a happy life in our little west coast town, but we have paid a price. We have not been there for some important events such as the births of our grandchildren, We have missed watching them grow up; we have missed backyard barbecues (烧烤) and basketball weekends with them. Our home, while very comfortable, was also very quiet.
Every fall we travel to see the children. We usually fly, first to California to see our son Scott and spend a week or more with him trying to catch up on everything we’ve missed, Then, usually in November, we make the even longer trip east across Canada to see Travis and our grandchildren, who were about their twenties.
Fortunately, both our sons are doing well and grandchildren are growing up straight and tall. We love all of them and they love us. We’re very happy but there are times I think about the things we didn’t see — the tears or the smile on the granddaughter’s face, their school graduations, my sons’ joy at successes in business.
Life has been good for our family but we have all paid a price.

At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals and other projects began to be built in my village, “Who are they?” I asked. “They are good men from our government,” my grandma replied.
Shortly afterwards, I moved to another city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard so villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed, a policy (政策) was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.

On Nov. 7, the 41-year-old made history. She became China’s first female (女性) spacewalker! Wang, together with astronaut Zhai Zhigang, completed a 6.5-hour spacewalk. They adjusted (调整) the station’s robotic arm. They also tested the safety (安全) of their spacesuits (太空服). These spacesuits were made by China.
