Little Hands, a raccoon (浣熊) without parents, was just a few weeks old when it was found all alone on the side of the road. It was early June, and all the wildlife rescue centers (救助中心) in the area were already full. Then Nikki Robinson decided to take it home.
While Robinson was busy with her work, her mom, Linda, was retired at home. So after Robinson made it clear that she wouldn’t have grandchildren soon, Linda became Little Hands’ mom. “The first time my mom bottle-fed it and it looked up at her, her heart was greatly warmed,” Robinson said. “She treated it very sweetly early on because it liked to be touched a lot. So she created a strong connection with it, even knowing it would go back to the wild some day.”
Little Hands grew up strong, and by the end of the summer, it struck out on its own. But Little Hands kept coming back and remained friendly with the whole family and it was very kind and sweet with them. “My mom has a bench where she sits outside, and it would come up and climb onto the bench and sit beside her,” Robinson said. “It snuggled (依偎) up to my mom, and then it would have its food and run off. ”
Since Little Hands left the house, Linda has taken in many raccoon babies that have no parents. And each year, the raccoons she releases (释放) into the wild continue coming back. “Every day, she sits outside and waits, and even when they’re grown up, they’ll visit her and she just loves it,” Robinson said.
Because of Linda, the little raccoons are able to live out their lives in the wild, but just like her human children, they know they can always come home to Mom for a snack and a hug.

Australia is the only area of the world that has koalas. Koalas means “no water” in Australia. Because koalas hardly drink water, but they get fluids from their food — eucalyptus (桉树) leaves.

The event took place one snowy January morning. Thomas Smith was walking his dog, Jack, in the park. “As I was walking, I just saw Jack running onto the ice towards the ducks in the middle, and then he fell into the water and couldn’t climb out,” said Smith. He realized he had no choice but to try and save his dog. “Someone else told me the lake was only one-meter deep, but it was at least twice that. I had to break my way through the 6 cm ice. Finally, I got Jack by the neck, and pulled him out. I don’t think I have ever felt so cold by the time we got back to dry land. And when we got there, everyone was asking if Jack was okay. No one was particularly (尤其) worried, about me!”
A neighbor, Julie Brown, saw it all happen. “The dog went onto an icy lake. All of a sudden, it started to go under. There were crowds of people around, and they were all shouting and screaming (尖叫). Before I knew it, the owner Smith was in the water forcing his way through the ice. I can’t begin to imagine how cold it was. Everyone was very nervous, but he was as cool as a cucumber—he just crawled (爬) back out, put the dog on its lead (在沿上), and went home.”
Many regard him as a hero, but Mr. Smith is quite laid-back about it (心平气和) . “Most dog owners are the same as me. They would do what I did without a second thought. But in the future, I’m going to make sure he’s on lead near any ice ponds (池塘).” Pets are members of our family. Would you do the same for them?

Amy takes care of many animals in the park, but she also does important research. As she observes the animals that she looks after, she learns more about their needs and behavior. This information helps the animals in the park, but it can also be used to protect other members of the species in the wild.
It’s hard work to look after these animals. Their needs often change according to different hours of the day. So Amy must depend on her science knowledge and good number sense to help her make the right decisions all day long.
Even though dolphins spend much of their time underwater, they are mammals(哺乳动物). This means that they must come to the surface to take in air. Dolphins give birth to their young. They’re not hatched from eggs. Just like all other mammals, mother dolphins must nurse, or feed milk to their babies.
Amy and her team know this first-hand. One of their dolphins recently gave birth. A baby dolphin is not small, either. It was almost 1 meter long the day it was born. A big dolphin usually eats about 4% of its body weight in food every day. Amy knows that a mother dolphin that is nursing needs twice the food. So when the baby dolphin was born, Amy immediately doubled the mother’s food every day.
