The Ministry of Education (教育部) announced a notice in 2021 that restricts (限制) primary and middle school students from carrying mobile phones to school.

The government wants to improve students’ focus on study and fight addiction (沉迷) to the Internet and games.

According to a 2020 report by the China Internet Network Information Center, China had 175 million Internet users under the age of 18 in 2019. This is worrying, as long-time use of smartphones harms children’s eyesight, cervical vertebrae (颈椎) and even the brain, according to the World Health Organization.

Many schools in Beijing have taken action to restrict students’ phone use at school. According to Zhou Dandan, an English teacher at Beijing No. 20 High School, every classroom in her school has a box to store students’ phones during class.

Li Jisen, a student from Beijing No. 101 Middle School, agrees with the new policy. Li believes that restricting phone use at school is a good way to put the focus back on schoolwork.

However, Liu Yanping, headmaster of First Branch of Beijing National Day School, told South China Morning Post that it’s not wise to take a “one size fits all” (一刀切) method.

Kathy Chen, a parent from Shanghai, allowed her daughter to take her phone to school. Chen said it’s more important to develop kids’ ability to self-manage and develop good habits of phone usage.

【推荐1】Zhu Xiangbing has been teaching at the Dongxi Primary School in the mountains of Hubei Province for 39 years. He has helped over 200 students get out of the mountains.

Back in 1984, Zhu graduated from middle school and was preparing to take the exam to enter high school. One day, the leader of his village came to visit him and asked if he would like to be the teacher at the village’s primary school. It was a hard decision for Zhu to make. Accepting the job meant he would not be able to leave the village, but if he refused the offer, the students there would be left with no teacher.

After spending a whole night thinking, Zhu decided to take the offer. Then he began to work hard to learn teaching skills. Besides learning from his own teachers, he also taught himself in his spare time. Quickly, Zhu became a good teacher. Zhu often walks for several hours on mountain roads to visit his students’ homes. He encourages them to study hard. With his help, more than 30 students from poor families have been able to go to school and receive education.

Because of the school’s terrible working and living conditions, many teachers don’t want to stay there. To get them to stay, Zhu tries his best to make them feel at home. He often invites them to live and eat in his house.

Over the years, Zhu has had many opportunities (机会) to leave the village, but he has turned all of them down. “I want to stay and help more young teachers grow and take root (扎根) here so that our kids can get a good education,” he said.

In China, lots of students often use much of their time to study their lessons and don’t help with housework at home. Some students don’t think they need to do housework. Some parents don’t let their children do it. As a result, students are all in need of basic skills.

Luckily, things are changing. In 2021, many schools began to teach students life skills. Guangming Middle School in Shenyang built some farming clubs. There students learnt to plant vegetables. “At first I thought I could only grow some vegetables here, but in fact, I learnt a lot about vegetables,” said Cheng Bing, a girl at the school.

In Hope Middle School, students have a special life skill class: They learn to make dumplings in different kinds of shapes. “I couldn’t make dumplings before, but now I am good at doing it. I really love my life skill class. It’s my favourite class,” said Jia Yan, a boy at the school.
