It was a nice winter day. After dinner, Ms. Lee checked(查看) her e-mails as usual. One e-mail caught her eye. It was from Mary, a girl who sat at the back of the classroom. She answered questions a lot in class.
Ms. Lee,
I love you and your classes. They are always interesting and full of surprises. Wish you a good holiday! Well Steve, Ella and I want to improve our English during the holidays. We have no idea what to do. Any good advice?
Stopping here, Ms. Lee began to think carefully. “Steve spends lots of time remembering words, but always forgets most of them quickly. Ella didn’t do well in the final exam. She has to go over her lessons a lot. Mary will go to a writing competition. She needs to read more and improve her writing in a short time.”
Just then, her phone rang. It was a message from her best friend, an English teacher in another middle school. Her friend proposed a trip to Hong Kong. Ms. Lee told her she was available, but she wouldn’t like to travel because she still had no idea on how to help her students. Her friend laughed and soon sent her a picture with a QR code(二维码)in it. “It’s all you want,” her friend said. Ms. Lee scanned(扫描) the code and found it was an English homework project (项目) for the coming winter holiday. As she read it, a big smile appeared on her face.

I got $1,978 from them. But my goal was $2,000. To reach the goal, I joined a half- marathon(半程马拉松). I promised to run in the banana clothes if my friends helped me reach my goal of $2,000 on the day of the half-marathon.

Yang Liu, 24, is an inheritor (传承人) of bamboo drifting. She started to learn it from her grandmother when she 7. As she was weak in health as a child, her grandmother wanted her to get into better shape through this sport. On January 13th, Emma Oakes lost her dog Millie when they were out for a walk. Emma was very worried. She asked the team DDSAR for help. After about two hours, volunteers found Millie in a wetland. It was dangerous for Millie to stay there. The water was around her, and she might fall into it.
The DDSAR used a drone to follow Millie. Also, some policemen came and tried to get close to Millie by boat and on foot. But Millie was very afraid of those men. They made Millie move farther away from the safe place, so they had to stop their work. Later, one of the volunteers thought of an idea. He said they could use meat dangling from the drone, and then help Millie get to a safe place. The other volunteers and the policemen agreed with him and decided to do it.
Millie was very hungry and wanted to eat the meat. She followed the meat and left the wetland. Finally, Millie ran towards Emma. Everyone there was happy for them. According to a recent survey by China Youth Daily, more than 76 percent of young people in China said they felt their Chinese language skills have weakened. They don’t use difficult rhetorical technique (修辞手法) as often anymore. It is believed that digital technology and Internet emojis (表情符号) have changed their communication habits.
For example, direct expression is the preferred way to communicate online. When one sees something funny, one will simply type “hahaha” or use the “cry-laugh” emoji, Beijing Youth Daily reported. Also, “copy and paste (粘贴) ” culture is getting popular. People simply pick up expressions from the Internet without much thought. Many begin to use a fixed set of sentence patterns, such as “Whenever you disagree with each other, you ...”
Cai Xiaojia (not her real name), a teacher from Fuzhou, told China Youth Daily that words in general are being used less. For example, people can share photos online with little need for words to describe them.
If this trend (趋势) continues, it could influence our way of thinking, People’s Daily reported. When we use expressions without thinking, it means we have become too lazy to express our real feelings. If teenagers adopt casual (不正式的) methods of expression like emojis, they could lose the ability to use words properly.
To improve our language skills, experts suggest that we should try to think independently and develop our own language logic (逻辑).They also suggest that we should read more works of literature (文学). “Keep using different words to show your own feelings,” said Shen Xiaolong, a professor in the Chinese department at Fudan University.

【推荐3】Do you think high school students should read classic works of literature(文学)?
Lilian: We lack(缺乏) understanding in life so it’s likely that we may have difficulty understanding the deeper meanings under the surface of the classics. But this shouldn’t be a reason to give up reading classics. As Francis Bacon said, “Reading makes a full man; conference(谈话)a ready man; and writing an exact man.”
Harry: Classics are the treasures our ancestors left us. We have the duty to read them and pass them down through the generations. As the old Chinese saying goes. “One who is filled with knowledge always behaves with elegance(优雅).” Famous books can cultivate(培养)students’ cultural literacy(素养)and arouse their interest in culture.
Linda: Without background and life experience, students can’t resonate(与…共鸣)with authors from previous eras. What’s more, partly due to the writers’ outdated ways of thinking, there might be some misunderstandings. While reading, some students mainly focus on words and expressions without carefully reflecting on them. For this reason, reading classics might be a waste of time.
Dale: For one thing, not all classics are suitable for all students, as there are many complex(复杂的) expressions and deep ideas. For another, some classics have unique writing styles, but they may be too difficult for students to understand. If students are asked to read these classics, they probably won’t be able to understand them.
1. What is the discussion mainly about?
