As is known to all, “No farmers, no food.” Well, we now have a new day of celebration, the Chinese Farmers’ Harvest (收获) Festival. It’s the first in China created especially for farmers.
“The Chinese Farmers’ Harvest Festival falls on the Autumnal Equinox (秋分) each year, starting in 2018,” said Han Changfu, the Minister of Agriculture. The Autumnal Equinox is one of the 24 solar terms in the traditional Chinese calendar. In 2018, the Autumnal Equinox fell on September 23, one day before the Mid-Autumn Festival.Itgives people in the city a great chance to travel to the countryside, enjoy the beautiful scenery and celebrate the harvest with farmers. Although climates and crops are different in many parts of China, the harvest time is usually in autumn. This is why the government decided to celebrate this festival on the Autumnal Equinox.
As a major agricultural country, China has the largest number of farmers in the world. And it can produce a large number of agricultural products every year. “I’m sure the festival will become one of the most popular and most important ones around the world,” Han said.
Shen Jianhua, a university professor, says farmers should have a special festival since they have made great contributions to our country. Setting up the festival can improve the position (地位) of farmers, increase their selfesteem (自尊) and create an environment where they are respected and valued.

We celebrated the China Hanfu Day from April 28th to May 13th, 2018 in Xi’an. There were catwalk shows and traditional music concerts. That day people wore traditional Chinese clothing. Hanfu fans from all over the country gathered there to take photos and put them online for a Hanfu photo competition.
China Hanfu Day is on the third day of the third month of the Chinese lunar calendar. In old China, this day was also known as Shangsi Festival. Its aim (目的) is to encourage young Chinese to be proud of traditional clothing, as well as Chinese culture.
Han people lived in China before the Qing dynasty. Hanfu is their traditional clothing. It has a history of about 3,000 years and it also changes. However, some of its main characteristics (特点) remain. For example, there are two parts that overlap (交叠) on the front. People call it “Jiao Ling”. On the other hand, people usually use ribbons (系带) instead of buttons (扣子). It is the main characteristic of Hanfu, too.
China is becoming a leading country in the world, and the Chinese people feel more confident about its traditional culture than ever before. Wearing traditional clothing might be an interesting way of showing how we feel about this.

Firstly, paper bags and straws are made from trees. Trees, as you know, can reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels in the air. They can slow down climate change. An increase in the use of paper bags can cause more deforestation.
Secondly, products made from paper require more energy and water. About 10% more energy than and four times as much water is used to produce a paper bag than a plastic one. You might say that we can use recycled paper to save that energy and water. This seems to be a good idea. However, it takes even more energy and water to go through the recycling process than to make a brand-new paper bag. Products made from recycled paper are also often short-lived.
Furthermore, paper products are heavier than plastic ones. That means they require more oil to transport. Seven trucks are needed to transport two million paper bags, while only one truck is needed to transport the same number of plastic bags. The increased weight also leads to a large amount of waste once the bags are thrown away.
Paper products are actually a lose-lose for both the environment and businesses. They are more expensive than plastic products. A paper straw costs about 5 to 12 cents, while a plastic one usually costs only about 2 cents.
The most environment-friendly solution is to avoid single-use products altogether. Products like glass water bottles and steel straws can be used over and over again. They are much better than either paper products or plastic products. Through increasing the use of these products, you can greatly reduce your throwaway waste and truly make our earth a greener place!

In Japan, most schools demand (要求) that students wear uniforms, such as sports suits or skirts. But many Japanese schools even regulate (规定) the colour of underwear (内衣)! They also demand that girls’ white socks be folded in a certain way and boys’ heads be shaved (剃掉). And Japanese schools also tell students that they may not date (约会), go to movies, leave home after sunset or play video games without permission from the school.
In America, for safety at some schools, students must have a pair of indoor shoes to change into at school every day. This makes sure students won’t fall over on the wet floors and keeps the schools clean. Gum (口香糖) chewing is not allowed in many US school buildings, as it is difficult to clean up. And if students chew gum in class, _______.
In Britain, strange hairstyles are not allowed in some schools. But they might allow students to wear certain hairstyles during the World Cup years. In 2020, Japanese space probe Hayabusa 2 brought back about 5.4 grams of sand from Ryugu, a near Earth asteroid. Scientists found over 20 types of amino acids in the sand. It was the first time that people had found amino acids outside the Earth.
What does that mean? Amino acids are the key to life. They are the building blocks of proteins. Proteins form our bodies’ organs and help us live. This finding shows that dust from asteroids, such as Ryugu, may have brought seeds of life to the Earth billions of years ago, according to Japanese professor Hisayoshi Yurimoto at Hokkaido University. “Life could have been born in more places in the universe than previously thought,” Professor Kensei Kobayashi at Yokohama National University said.
Previously, people found amino acids in meteorites—space rocks that fell to the Earth. But they were polluted by living things on the ground. Hayabusa 2 is special because it sent the sand to the Earth without letting it touch the outside air.
Hayabusa 2, launched in 2014, aimed to work out the origins of the solar system and life. NASA has a similar mission. It sent a probe to an asteroid named Bennu. The probe collected samples.
By comparing the samples from Ryugu and Bennu, scientists will better understand the chemicals in the universe and how life began, according to Science and Technology Daily.

Elephants’ long ivories make them look strong. But their beautiful ivories bring them bad luck. People kill elephants for their ivories. Do you ever have your teeth pulled out? It’s very painful (痛的). It’s even more painful for an elephant to lose their ivories.
Elephants use their ivories to fight, cut things, dig (挖) for water. But humans use the ivories to make things they want. In fact, humans don’t really need the ivories. Only the elephants need them.

Parades, music, art, and food from many different cultures…if this sounds fun to you, then you can’t miss the Mombasa Carnival, a huge multicultural street party that takes place every November in Mombasa, Kenya. It’s a festival that celebrates not only African culture, but also cultures from other countries.
Mombasa is the second largest city in Kenya, Africa, and since the 12th century, it has been a stopping place for many foreign traders. Indians, Arabians, as well as the Spanish, all came there and left pieces of their cultures behind.
During the festival, businessmen line the streets, selling products. Some traditional artists show and sell their works, and local bands play Afropop and other types of music while traditional and modern dancing all take place on stage and in the streets.
Men and women wear traditional clothing, such as the kikoy. It’s a large piece of cloth that covers around the body and is tied at the waist or below the armpits with bright colors, usually worn by both men and women. The cloth can also be a skirt or even be used as a bag to carry babies. This type of clothing represents African culture.
There’s plenty to eat and drink for sale, like mnazi, a drink made from coconut, and madafu, which is fresh coconut milk. There are vegetables or meat dishes, often very hot and served on rice. Or try nyama choma, made by beef over a fire.
