Nowadays, many people choose to continue working in their spare time because of much pressure from supporting their families. However, a study shows that instead of spending your spare time at work in hopes of getting a raise, maybe you should go to the gym. That’s because it could make you happy just like the money you made during this time. A new interesting study in The Lancet found that people who enjoy doing exercise have a greater sense of happiness than those who don’t.
Researchers from Oxford and Yale Universities used data collected from more than 1.2 million Americans. They were asked, “How many times have you felt uncomfortable because of mental problems in the past 30 days?” They were also asked about their exercise habits and were able to choose from 75 kinds of activities, including doing housework and childcare, running, weightlifting, and cycling.
The researchers found that the people who exercise regularly feel bad for an average of 35 days per year while the people doing little exercise feel bad for an additional 18 days. From the study, people who exercised had 43 percent fewer days of poor mental health in the past month than people who did not exercise. All exercise types can lead to a lower mental health burden (负担).
Social activities for exercising like team sports had an even more positive effect, although cycling was the most popular. Perhaps that’s because it takes place outdoors, which is always a way for people to get rid of stress.
It is possible to get too much exercise. Business Insider’s write-up on the study said, “The mental health of those people who exercised for longer than three hours a day suffered more than that of those who didn’t exercise.” The right amount seems to be three to five times per week, lasting 30 to 60 minutes each. The key point should be that any amount helps, so don’t force yourself to hit that perfect balance. All exercise types result in a lower mental health burden than not exercising.

Health experts say the US adult now sits about 6.5 hours a day. That is up about an hour a day compared to 2007. The news is even worse for teens. They sit eight hours each day. The information was put out by the National Center for Health Statistics. It has collected the numbers for the past 16 years. It is worried about what it has found.
Research shows that people who are not active can get sick. Their bones get weaker. They burn fewer calories (卡路里). That makes them more likely to put on too much weight. They might even get diabetes (糖尿病). They are at risk for high blood pressure and heart problems, too.
Some experts also think sitting too much can influence how your blood moves through your body and how well your body fights off illness. Being active helps in lots of ways. It can make you happier, burn more calories and give you more energy. It can also help you sleep better.
About 60% of people in the US watch at least two hours of TV each day. That number has stayed about the same in recent years.
Computers are the biggest reason for more hours spent sitting. Computer use outside of work or school has gone up for all age groups. Now, 50% of adults spend at least an hour of their free time on a computer each day. That is up from 29% in 2003.
About 53% of teens now spend at least an hour of free time on computers. So do 56% of kids. As many as 1 in 4 people who use computers use three hours or more outside of work and school.
So get up, take some breaks and go outside. You might save your life by doing outdoor activities.

March 22, 2014 Dear Aunt Emma, I was so happy to get your letter yesterday. I am heavier than you saw me last year, and I’m even the heaviest in my class now. So Mom wants me togo on a diet. Vegetables are good for my health, but meat isn’t. Now I eat more vegetables but less meat and do more exercise than before. For example, I jump rope for thirty minutes every day and go swimming every weekend. By the way, I am the best swimmer in my class. I won the first prize at the swimming race last week. Dad often takes me to the beach in summer. Summer is the best season to swim. It’s also my favorite season. Summer is coming. It is getting hotter and hotter. Would you like to go swimming with us when you come back to Dalian this summer? It will be fun. Of course, to me, getting taller is important, too. I am only 150 cm tall now. 【推荐2】Have you ever watched a film with your friends and thought, “How wonderful!” or had a meal with your family and said, “That was the best!”?
Well, there may be a small secret about why you enjoyed it so much. Our experiences are stronger if we share them with someone. That means good experiences become better, and bad ones become worse. That’s according to a new study by Yale University.
Scientists did a small study on female college students. In the test they share chocolate with someone they thought was another participant(参与者). But in fact, it was a scientist. In each test, they got two pieces of chocolate. They ate one piece at the same time with the “participant” and another piece alone. The participants thought the chocolate was tastier and more enjoyable when they shared it with someone. Even though both pieces of chocolate were from the same box.
Scientists then did another experiment, this time with bitter, unpleasant chocolate. Again, the participants thought the chocolate was bitterer than the piece they ate alone.
“When people think of shared experience, what usually comes to mind is being with friends or family.” said scientist Erica Boothby. We often don’t know how much people around influence(影响)our decisions, according to Erica.
However, it does show that sharing things with a friend may just make your good way a little brighter. Because the study only looked at female college students, it doesn’t mean the whole picture.

【推荐3】Boys and girls, let’s do an experiment (实验) in today’s lesson.
What we need:
How we do the experiment:
1.Pour tag water into the glass until it is about 2/3 full.
2.Drop the egg carefully into the glass and watch it going down towards the bottom.
3.Add about five spoons of salt to the water. Test to see if the egg goes up.
4.Add more salt if the egg is still at the bottom.
The science behind it:
Things go down in the water when they are denser (密度更大的) than the water. By adding salt, we make the water denser. Once the water is denser than the egg, it goes up and floats (漂浮) on the water.
You can also try other things to see if you can have the same result.

Have things like this ever happened do you? If so, you may ask yourself, “who are these people? Why are they doing these things to me? “
These days many people don’t know their neighbors.Sometimes we share a friendly smile or say hello, but lots of people don’t even know their neighbors’ names! When you don’t know someone, it’s easy to be angry when something has happened that you think is unfair. You think, “Maybe they like to make me angry.” or “Maybe they do it on purpose.” Believe it or not, your neighbors probably don’t mean to irritate(激怒)you. Often, they don’t even know that they’re making you feel angry. So before you take unusual steps to fix the problem, you should discuss it with them first.
When you move towards your neighbor, you should talk to them in a friendly manner. Praise their children to make them feel good. Then explain the situation. And if you can think of a simple way to solve the problem, suggest it.
If talking doesn’t work, ask another person to help. This person can listen to both sides of the story and help you and your neighbor solve the situation.
Finally, sometimes it’s a good idea to avoid the problem. Depending on the problem it might be the best to just stay out of your neighbor’s say.

Artificial Intelligence(AI)is growing rapidly. We are living in a world that depends more and more on AI. AI is a group of technologies. It helps machines get, understand and use information to do tasks.
AI’s recent developments have got a lot of social attention. Some people have welcomed AI because it makes things possible. For example, AI will have a big influence on areas like medicine and engineering. But this attention has also produced a lot of fear. Especially many workers are worrying that AI could make them lose their jobs.
According to a recent study, nearly five percent of jobs disappear because of AI. In some industries, AI has already been doing the work that people used to do, such as assembling(装配)cars, digging the coal and lifting goods. Self-driving cars and trucks controlled by AI will also take away the driver's jobs in the future.
On the other hand, AI will also create many new jobs for people. More people will be needed to write programs for AI systems(系统)and they will set up and work on them too. Meanwhile, jobs that require(需要)feelings, excellent communication skills with people will not be replaced(取代)by AI. These include jobs in fields like teaching, nursing and personal training.
AI is here. It is changing how people live and work in many ways. That makes AI important to watch, not to fear.

Should students get paid for good grades? The following are some different opinions.
Sandy’s son is an 8th grader. She said she didn’t believe in paying kids for good grades. “They’re supposed to do well at school and always try their best.” she said.
10-year-old Lisa is a straight “A” student and she said the grade itself was the reward. “I think, ‘oh my goodness, I got an ‘A’. I’m still a straight ‘A’ student. I’m fine with that.”
Her father added, “She’s proud of what she achieves on her own. We don’t need to motivate (激励)her further. ”
However, Nikki said her son Seth, 13, did need the push. “For C’s we don’t pay anything, but for B’s we give him five dollars and for A’s we give him ten dollars.”she said.
“I wasn’t doing that well,” explained Seth, “and then they started paying me for grades and my grades improved quickly.”
While that might sound good, Sara, an expert, warns parents against paying kids for good grades. “Yes, we do see a change, but a lot of times students couldn’t be really motivated,” said Sara.
Mary, mother of 12-year-old David, said, “We agreed to pay him for doing his job of going to school. If he gets an ‘A’, we give him $10. If he gets a ‘B’, there’s nothing. If he gets a ‘C’, he owes us $10.”
“I like the idea because it motivates me to try harder,” said David.
Still, experts warn that paying kids like David who already do well, can decrease their motivation, their creativity and their performance.
So, before you put a price on that report card, try to think about it carefully.

【推荐2】You may hate that person your parents love more than you at home. From grades to sports, and of course job—your parents usually use “he” to judge you.
I know how much you want to explain this to your parents when they are comparing you with other kids. These words only turn into arguments and end up making you feel bad. So why not learn to solve it?
Never let such comparisons upset you. Spend your time on what you like and bring out the best in you. When you get good results, you will have reasons to stand by your own side.
Set your own goals. Under the pressure of society, parents usually do such comparisons. The society is ready to give you its standards(标准), but your own choices and goals are the most important.
Also, stop answering back to your parents when you are compared. Don’t accept that you are worse than your neighbor. Instead, tell them you might not be as good as him/her in that skill but will always try your best to improve.
Start comparing your improvement to yourself and talk to parents to do the same. Tell them you would like it better when they stop comparing you with others and start comparing you with your past performance.
I know it is hard to keep cool when parents start with this talk. So next time you have such a conversation, remember to try these methods and I believe you will begin to feel proud and less hurt.

Porridge (粥). It doesn’t have a very tasty name, does it? I’m here to try and tell you that porridge isn’t boring and tasteless, that it can be a delicious, easy to cook and very healthy way to start the day.
If you’ve never eaten it (although you probably have!), porridge is a kind of food for breakfast. It is usually a kind of grain (谷物) with either milk or water, and often warmed up. It is very healthy, so it’s a very good choice for people who are ill, and it gives long-lasting energy (能量) for the day.
Porridge preparation is up to what you choose to use. If I’m cooking for myself, I put a very big handful of oats (燕麦) in a pan, add a little bit of water and about 200 ml of milk, and let it boil. It takes about five minutes to cook. Once it’s cooked, the fun part is putting more things in for the flavours (味道). Porridge alone doesn’t have a very strong flavour. Although some people think this makes porridge boring, I think this is what makes porridge exciting! It is like a piece of white paper—you can put in almost anything you want in the porridge. Dried fruits and nuts are very healthy choices and can give you energy for the day. But if you don’t like these, then chocolate is also very delicious choice. (Just don’t add too much!)
One of the best things about porridge? You can make it almost anywhere in the world. You can usually buy big bags of oats, then add other things to make your porridge interesting—whatever is cheap and easy to find, wherever you are. Porridge? Hopefully, it sounds a lot tastier now!
