【推荐1】Mr. Guo is a teacher from Xi’an. He asked his students to hand in their homework through a QR code (二维码). “We spent an hour or two in class learning how to generate (使产生) the codes, and in the end everything gets easier.” Said Guo, “When students finish the homework, they keep it on WeChat. Then, each student makes his own QR code and gives it to me.”
The QR codes can be sent to Mr. Guo by email, QQ and WeChat. When Guo scans (扫描) his students’ QR codes, their homework appears on his phone. He finds that their homework becomes more creative, with many pictures, music and even videos.
Guo’s students like the new way and think it is interesting. “We are living in the information age. Many students like to work with computers, which makes learning more fun.” said Tingting, a student of Guo’s. Guo said, “It is worth trying to use new technology in education because education itself is a kind of creation. I don’t want my students to fall behind the times.”
However, some parents are worried. They are afraid that their children will spend too much time on computers. But in fact, it’s unnecessary. Students still need to look up information in books and write it down when they do their homework. Also for teachers, it allows them to check the students’ work at any time. And it’s also an easy way to share homework with other students.

2. What did Mr. Guo’s students think of the new way to hand in homework?
3. Why does Tingting think many students like to work with computers?

The world's leading tech companies are planning to build smarter online communities. They discussed this at the World Internet Conference, which was held from Dec 3 to 5 in Wuzhen, Zhejiang.
The development of arificial intelligence(Al,人工智能) was a hot topic at the conference. If a machine can learn and solve problems as humans do, it can be called AI.
The company Alibaba uses AI techology in its unmanned (无人的)supermarket in Wuzhen. There is no salesperson in the supermarket, just a tablet (平板电脑 )on a desk that says “please smile”. If you smile, it gives you a special discount (折扣) for your goods. The bigger you smile, the more discounts you get. Payment is done automatically(自动地) through your Alipay account (账户). When you first enter the supermarket, the supermarket's AI recognizes (识别)your face and your account.
There is also AI that can read lips. Sougou brought its lip—reading system to the conference. It recognizes your mouth's movements and turns them into voice or text messages. This could be very useful when you are trying to talk to someone on your phone in a noisy place. Police could also use the technology to help them find criminal suspects (犯罪嫌疑人) by lip—reading recordings from video cameras.
Another type of AI focuses on understanding human emotions. Microsoft's chatbot XiaoIce can not only provide useful information, but also chat with people like a real friend. XiaoIce has a WeChat account. After following the account, users can start talking with her. She knows when to comfort you or tell jokes. She keeps improving herself by talking with users.
These technologies are being put into wider use. We may see a smarter world and better lives in the near future.

With a smart phone in hand, life for most Chinese people has become easier. They can shop online, watch TV shows and call a taxi.

Although China has already had more than 900 million Internet users, among them, those aged 60 and above make up just less than 7 percent. Most of the old people mainly use the smart phones just for making calls. Other services are still difficult to them.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic (疫情), people are often asked to show a green health code on their smart phones to get into public places. But many old people don’t use smart phones. Even if they have one, many don’t know how to use it.

What Do No. 5 High School Students Do in Their Free Time?
Last month we asked our students about their free time activities. Our questions were about exercise, use of the Internet and watching TV. Here are the results.
We found that only fifteen percent of our students exercise every day. Forty-five percent exercise four to six times a week. Twenty percent exercise only one to three times a week. And twenty percent do not exercise at all!
We all know that many students often go online, but we were surprised that ninety percent of them use the Internet every day. The other ten percent use it at least three to four times a week. Most students use it for fun and not for homework.
The answers to our questions about watching television were also interesting. Only two percent of the students watch TV one to three times a week. Thirteen percent watch TV four to six times a week. And eighty-five percent watch TV every day! Although many students like to watch sports, game shows are the most popular.
It is good to relax by using the Internet or watching game shows, but we think the best way to relax is through exercise. It is healthy for the mind and the body. Today almost everyone has a smart phone booths are out of date and seem to be useless. But cities like Shanghai are trying to bring the old phone booths to life.
Shanghai will make changes to 263 phone booths in Xuhui District. The Library Booth is one of the six new kinds of booths, offering 60 booths for people to borrow and read. Another kind allows users to listen to audiobooks( 有声书)and even record their own voices.
Shanghai is not the only city trying to save the old phone booths. London cares about them even more, because the red booths have long been a special scene in London since the 1930s when they were painted all red. In recent years London has come up with many ideas to help phone booths stay useful. The UK company British Telecom has added screens and free WiFi to some booths. Users can use them to surf online and search for maps and weather reports. The company also allows people to rent(租)some booths to change them as they want to. Since 2009, more than 1,500 phone booths have been turned into flower shops, mini-cafes, art museums and even shower rooms.
In New York City, three phone booths in Time Square are turned into places for immigrant(移民) voices. When visitors pick up the phone, they can listen to oral(口述) histories of immigration from the newest New Yorkers. They can also open the books inside the booth to know more about the storytellers. Or they can share a part of their own stories if they wish.
Brazil made phone booths works of art. Sao Paulo paired 100 artists with 100 phone booths. Some artists painted on the booths, others made them sculptures- one was shaped like a brain and another wore a pair of shoes.
Phone booths are finding creative ways to live on. Will they succeed? Only time will tell.

March 25 is an important day in China. It is a day for school safety education. At school, the big accidents (事故) mainly are stampedes (踩踏), earthquakes and fires.
A stampede always happens in crowded places. When students around you begin to push, stand there and try to hold onto something. If you fall down in the crowd, put your hands around your head. Move to one side, and bend (弯曲) your body and legs.
Earthquakes happen all over the world. When you feel everything is moving, quickly get under a desk and hold on. If you are outdoors, find a place away from buildings, trees, and power lines (电线). In Japan, many schools take earthquake drills (演练) once a month. They help students stay calm in a real earthquake.
When there’s a fire, leave the classroom quickly. It’s better to put something wet over your mouth and nose. This way, you won’t breathe in (吸入) smoke. When there’s a fire, people can’t jump out of the window from higher than two storeys (楼层). They may hurt themselves. In the US, most school buildings have fire escapes (防火梯). They are usually made of steel and lie outside the building. People can get away from the fire and escape through a special door or a window.

I’m Mary. I began to send e-mails when I was 17 years old. I found Google five years later. Now, I use the Internet all the time. Internet has become so popular that about 90% of children aged 12 to 17 in America use it. About half of these children use the Internet every day. They visit chat rooms and send e-mails. They go to websites to get information for their homework.
“Children are now living in a virtual (虚拟的) world,” says Greenfield, a teacher at the University of California, “As the Internet is becoming more and more important for our life, we should worry about one question: ①good, children, the, or, for, Is, bad, Internet”

It was raining. I went into a cafe and asked for a coffee. While I was waiting for my drink, I realized there were other people in the place, but I felt loneliness(孤独). I saw their bodies, but I could not feel their minds because their minds belonged to the Net.
I stood up and walked between the tables. When I came to the biggest computer, I saw a thin, small man sitting in front of it.
“I’m Steve,” he finally answered after I asked him several times what his name was. “I cannot talk with you. I’m busy,” he said. He was chatting online and, at the same time, he was playing a computer game—a war game. I was surprised.
Why didn’t Steve want to talk with me? I tried again to speak to the computer geek(怪人), but not a word came out of his mouth. I touched his shoulder, but no reaction(反应). I was unhappy and then put my hand in front of the monitor(显示器), and he started to shout, “Leave me alone!”
I took a few steps back, wondering if all those people in the cafe were looking at me. I raised my head, and saw nobody showed any interest.
At that moment, I realized that the people there were having a nice conversation(谈话)with their machines, not with people. They were more interested in having a relationship with the computer, especially Steve. I would not want to imagine the future of human beings if they preferred sharing their lives with machines instead of with people.
I was worried and sank in my thoughts. I did not even realize that the coffee was bad, just as Steve did not notice there was a person next to him.
