Self-service retail station(零售店) have been set up in various offices in Wuxi, East China’s Jiangsu province since August, allowing employees(职员) to take and pay for food and drinks without needing to leave the office.
Differing from the unmanned convenience stores or vending machines, which are usually placed in public places, these simple shelves packed with snacks and drinks are only found in private spaces such as office buildings, where they can help save workers the time and trouble of having to leave the office to buy food.
First, consumers scan the QR code to enter the station, select the products they want, using the mobile payment apps Alipay or We Chat Pay to complete(完成) the payment, and then take the things. The prices in the retail station are generally lower than that in most convenience stores.
“I used to have to walk a long way to buy food, but now I don’t even have to leave the room to fill my belly,” Mrs Xia said.

It is difficult for young people to go through puberty because it changes both their bodies and minds. They need to understand what is going on with their bodies, how to do with those changes and learn to take responsibility (责任).
A young person may begin puberty at 8, while another may not start puberty until 14 or 15. Usually, girls start puberty before boys do. For both girls and boys, it usually comes to an end by the age of 18.
During these years, the body develops in many ways. Feeling will also change quickly. Young boys at this stage are interested in having fun and being accepted by others. They need to think before they act and make up their minds for themselves.
A girl’s personality often does not develop in the same way as a boy’s. Young girls sometimes lose confidence in themselves. They are no longer sure of their own feelings. Yet they are usually afraid to tell their parents or teachers about their problems. For this reason, young girls should be encouraged to talk about things with trusted adults.

If you eat food with chopsticks, maybe your parents will tell you how to use them correctly: hold the chopsticks towards their end, not in the middle or the front third. When you are not using your chopsticks, or finish eating, put them down in front of you. Do not point with your chopsticks.
As we all know, the “rice bowl” culture of China influenced(影响)some Asian countries, such as Japan, Korea and Vietnam after we started to use chopsticks while eating food.
Chopsticks are usually two long thin pieces of wood or bamboo. Some people use plastic, animal bone or metal to make chopsticks as well. The most important thing is that chopsticks are a great invention(发明)in China.
Five thousand years ago, people usually cooked their food in large pots, using twigs(细枝) to remove it. As the population grew, people began cutting food into small pieces. People could eat the food easily if the food were in small pieces. And people changed twigs into chopsticks as the time went by.
Some people think that the famous thinker Confucius(孔子) living from 551 BC to 479 BC pushed the development of chopsticks. Confucius believed that using chopsticks instead of(而不是) knives would keep people away from killing at table.
Today we use chopsticks to enjoy our delicious food with our family members and friends, feeling peaceful.

Biangbiang mian is a kind of traditional food in Xi’an. It has a history of about 2,000 years. When the cook puts the noodles against the chopping board (砧板), the noodles make the sound “biang”. In fact, there is an interesting story about the word “biang”.
In old China, a scholar (秀才) goes to take exams. Unluckily, he meets some bad men on his way and loses (失去) all his money. He is very hungry. Then he sees a noodle shop and wants to eat a free bowl of noodles. He looks at the shop. There is no name for its noodles. He remembers his difficult trip. So, he has an idea of making the Chinese word “”. He writes it down on the paper. The shop keeper thinks the word is interesting and gives him a big bowl of noodles. Later, the scholar does well in the exam and people start to eat biangbiang mian. Because they think the noodles can bring them good luck.
Today, many people visit Xi’an and sit down in any restaurant to eat a bowl of biangbiang noodles.

The winter holiday is usually a good time to sleep in. But Gao Yuqi, a 14-year-old boy from Anhui, got up at 7 a. m. to run at least 2 kilometers every day during the holiday. In fact, this exercise was part of his homework.
Gao is not alone. Many schools across the country ask students to exercise during the winter holiday. The reason is that physical education test scores are now worth more on the senior high school entrance examination (中考). In Anhui, the score is now worth up to 60 points, which is the same as the score for an academic (学术的) subject.
Because of this, Gao’s school, Hefei Taochonghu Middle School, now asks students to run on sunny days and exercise indoors if the weather is bad. Students have to post exercise photos in their classes’ QQ groups. At the Golden Apple School in Chengdu, students have daily exercise plans. For example, they have to skip rope (跳绳) for two minutes and do three sets of sit-ups each day. Their parents will sign off (签字) on their plans after they finish exercising.
This has been a big challenge for many students, but has also helped to make exercise a bigger part of their lives. A student named Huang Zhicheng used to hate running. But he is now able to run for half an hour every day. “I have decided to keep doing this in the future,” he said.
Luo Zikun, a 12-year-old student at the Golden Apple School in Chengdu, fell in love with exercise during the holiday. He skipped rope for more than 10 minutes every day. “I didn’t exercise a lot in the past. Now it’s time to catch up!” he said.

Chips, cookies and ice cream... Many kinds of food we like are ultra-processed (超加工的). And you may want to eat them again and again, said a new study in the British Medical Journal.
What are ultra-processed foods (UPFs)? You can’t make them by yourself in your own house. They are usually made in factories. And they often have lots of materials you may never know. Such foods have more calories than natural foods.
The scientists studied 36 countries and found that UPF lovers may feel very bad if they stop eating the food. Why do people love UPFs? Such foods can bring dopamine (多巴胺) to people’s mind. This helps make them feel happier and want to eat more.
About 14 percent of adults and 12 percent of children are eating UPFs, said the study. They are not good for people’s health around the world. Scientists are now calling for more care about the UPFs.
1. Where are UPFs usually made?

When answering the phone, it is important for you to have polite and friendly manners. But do you know how to answer the phone properly? Here are some suggestions for you.
First, it is best to answer the phone after 2 or 3 rings. If you let it ring more than 3 times, the caller may become impatient and think you’re not available now. If you pick up the phone after the first ring, the caller may not have enough time to organize his/her thoughts.
Second, it is necessary to answer the phone in a quiet environment. If you’re in a loud environment, move somewhere quieter so that you can hear the caller, and the caller can hear you too.
After picking up the phone, greet the person politely first. If you don’t know who is calling, you can first say “Hello” and give your name. And then nicely ask who’s calling. Once the caller has introduced himself/herself, you can address (称呼) the caller properly. If you know who is calling, feel free to say something like “Hi! How are you today?”
Don’t talk to other people if you’re having some food. Take the time to swallow (咽下) it before answering the phone. In fact, you’re not supposed to speak with your mouth full at any time. Even when you’re talking to a friend, he/she may have a hard time understanding you.
1. When is the right time to answer the phone after it rings?2. Why is it necessary to answer the phone in a quiet place?
3. What should we do first after picking up the phone?
4. How can we greet the caller if we know him/her?

For a long time, Spanish people have had a traditional custom to celebrate New Year’s Eve. On the last day of the year, the 31st of December, they wait until 12:00 a. m. Everybody has to be ready to have twelve grapes to eat when the clock starts to chime(敲响). Each time the clock chimes, they put a grape in their mouth. Stories and Art of Chinese Fans
You may think you cannot live through summer without air conditioners (空调). But in ancient China, hand fans were almost the only ones to help people keep cool. Chinese people started to use hand fans over 2,000 years ago. The fans came in different shapes, such as round and square. They were also made from all kinds of materials. Palm leaf fans (棕叶扇) were cheap and easy to make. Feather fans (羽毛扇) showed the owner’s high status. Sandalwood (檀香) fans could send out a sweet smell.
Later, hand fans became far more than just something that could cool you down. They developed into art works, in which tuanshan (round fans)and zheshan (folded fans) were the most common.
In the shape of a full moon. tuanshan was usually made of silk. They had beautiful birds and flowers on them. Women especially those in the imperial palace (皇宫), liked to use them. Meanwhile, men, especially the literati (文人), used zheshan. The literati liked them because zheshan were usually made of paper and they could paint and write poems on them. It was a way for them to show off their ability in literature, painting and handwriting. Almost anything can be painted on zheshan.
Today, Chinese people still use these fans, only not many people write or paint on them anymore.
Next time when you are waving a fan, you may think of the stories behind it.
