Kwanzaa is a celebration of African American history and culture. It begins on December 26th and continues until New Year's Day, January 1st.
During the festival, a family member, usually the youngest child, lights candles in a special candleholder. Each night a candle is lit. Traditionally there are three green candles, three red candles and a central black candle. They represent the seven Kwanzaa principles(原则). The principles are believed to play a big role in building strong, successful families and neighborhoods. In the evenings, adults share stories and explain how to follow the seven principles in daily life. On the sixth day, which falls on New Year's Eve, family and friends get together to enjoy a large meal.

Chinese New Year is based on (基于) the Chinese calendar. It is usually celebrated in late January or early February, lasting (持续) for 15 days. People celebrate the coming of spring and wish for good luck. They put good luck sayings in their homes and eat a family dinner together. People make a special dumpling with a candy in it. If you get the dumpling with the candy, then you will have good luck in the coming year! Then people watch a special TV program and talk with their family members. Children celebrate the New Year by wearing red clothes and eating a stick of candied red berries (糖葫芦). It is said that the color red can also bring good luck.
In parts of Southeast Asia, people celebrate the New Year in late March or mid April. It’s a very hot time of year—a time for the water festival. To prepare for the New Year, they save the water. It might easily be 38℃ on New Year’s Day. Because it’s this hot, a water fight (水仗) is the best way to celebrate! Then the water is poured (倒) onto people’s shoulders (肩膀) to bring them good luck.
In America, there is often a “ball drop (落下)” celebration during the countdown (倒计时) to the New Year. The most famous one is at Times Square (广场) in New York. The elephant-foot drum dance is very popular among the Dai people. It can be danced by one or two people or a group of people. It is often performed during festivals. This form of dance was at first used to scare off evil and welcome the new year. Now it is a way for the Dai people to show their joy as well as their village culture. It also shows that the Dai people are kind, friendly and inclusive (包容的).
Xie Wenping, who is 32 years old, learned how to make these drums from his grandfather. “I was determined (下定决心的) to make more and better drums when I grew up,” Xie said.
But making an elephant-foot drum is no easy task. “Making an elephant-foot drum takes about 30 steps and one month,” Xie explained. First, Xie needs to choose the right wood and shape it like an elephant’s leg. Then he needs to hollow out the inside and cover it with cowhide (牛皮). The cowhide needs to go through many steps before it can be used on the drum. After that, Xie paints the drum with special patterns and adds a protective layer (保护层) on top. The last steps are tuning (调音) the drum and making it look nice. “A good elephant-foot drum should sound loud and strong when you beat it,” Xie said.
Even though making these drums can be repetitive (重复), Xie always feels encouraged when he sees his grandfather’s smile while making them. “Over the years, the number of craftspeople (工匠) skilled in making elephant-foot drums has gone down,” Xie said. “I feel like it’s my job to keep this tradition alive.”
To make it easier for people to enjoy the elephant-foot drum outside of Yunnan, Xie came up with the idea of making a smaller version (版本) of the drum and designing key chains that look like the drum.

When you eat something, your stomach breaks down its large molecules (分子) into smaller ones. Many people like to eat pineapples. So when you eat pineapples, they can “eat” you by breaking down the molecules that make up the cells (细胞) in your body.
Pineapples have certain enzymes (酶) that can break down proteins (蛋白质). Many smaller molecules like the pearls (珍珠) come together to form the long pearl necklace of a protein. You can cut a necklace with scissors. In the same way, the enzymes in pineapples “cut up” proteins.
All living things have proteins. They are an important part of the cells in your body. If an enzyme can break down a protein, it can break down cells as well. So will the cells of your tongue (舌头) when you eat pineapple. This is why your mouth will hurt if you eat too much pineapple.
But luckily, the cells in your tongue cure itself fast. And after you have swallowed the pineapple, the special enzymes will be broken down by your stomach. It won’t “eat” you anymore.
Why does pineapple have these enzymes? In fact, the enzymes in unripe (未成熟的) pineapple are stronger than those in ripe pineapple. Therefore, some scientists believe that they are created by the plant to prevent animals from eating its unripe fruit. Once the fruit is ripe, its enzymes won’t hurt an animal’s tongue and the fruit will be okay to eat.
Another reason is that the enzymes help the seed to grow up. They play an important role in sending messages to the cells of the plant. These messages tell the cells when to start and stop growing. Without these enzymes, the seed may not be able to properly develop.

While the idea behind cloning (克隆) your dead pet sounds like something out of a sci-fi (科幻) novel, the technology is not actually all that new. Briefly speaking, cloning is to make a copy of any living things or a cell (细胞). It is always a hot topic of discussion among scientists and even ordinary people.
You must have heard of the famous sheep, Dolly. It was the first successful man-made cloning animal in 1984. But long before that, in 1958, F.C. Steward grew whole carrot plants from carrot root cells, which encouraged the idea that cloning from animals’ cells may be possible. After more than twenty years, in 2005, the first cloned (克隆) dog—Snuppy was born. It was a pet dog. And scientists were able to re-clone him and create four more “Snuppy” in 2017. While one of them died, the other three were all healthy.
Many people still share concerns about (担忧) cloning animals. They believe that cloning could cause health problems. The cloning company claims that cloned animals have even fewer chances to meet health problems than non-cloned animals. The cloning company hopes that the process will become more common and acceptable.
For pet owner, cloning their dead pets can deal with their sadness. But the cloning process is by no means a quick fix. “It is not a rebirth,” Rodriguez, the manager of a cloning company said. “It’s the memory of that original animal and I think that’s what our clients are hoping to get. I don’t think they want to replace that animal. They’re just looking to get a part of that animal back.”
However, not all people support the idea of cloning. They believe that if cloning is used for bad purpose, it surely will create great problems that we cannot imagine and lead to the destruction of humankind.

A team of scientists from Ohio State University did experiments on 33 volunteers. They found that persons who exercised while listening to Italian musician Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons did much better in language ability (能力) tests than without music.
The volunteers said they felt better after exercising with or without the music. But their improvement on the test doubled(加倍) after listening to the music during exercise. “Exercise seems to cause positive changes in the nervous system(神经系统)and have a direct result on learning ability,” said the psychologist Charles Emery. Scientists have found that music can be good for health and education. It helps relieve stress, sadness and nervousness, encourages relaxation or sleep, wakes up the body and improves memory and thoughts.
Psychologists have been using Mozart’s music, especially his violin pieces, to help children with speech disorders(言语能力紊乱). Mozart is often chosen because his music is not only exciting. A study showed students who often exercise to Mozart’s music go on to score higher marks in tests. With important exams drawing near, your parents will not probably allow you to listen to music.
