Once upon a time, there lived a farmer. He grew very good corn. Each year, he would take part in the state farmers’ fair and win a top prize for his corn.
The story of the farmer’s success reached the ears of a reporter, and he wanted to interview the farmer. While he was learning about the farmer’s growing skills, he found that the farmer shared his best quality seeds(优质种子)with his neighbors.
“How could you afford to share your best corn seeds with your neighbors when some of them might go to the fair as well?” the reporter asked.
“Why couldn’t I?” the farmer replied. “The wind picks up pollen from the corn and moves it from field to field. If my neighbors grow poor quality corn, cross pollination(交叉授粉)will finally degrade(降低)the quality of my corn too. If I want to grow high quality corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn too.”
The farmer’s answer made the reporter understand how wise the old farmer was about connections in life.
It is the same with our lives. Those who choose to live in peace must help others around them to live in peace too. Those who wish to be loved must learn to love others too. I was angry and wanted to call her back. Then I suddenly thought of Grandma and what she had once done for me long ago.
It was a summer when I was eight. One day, Grandma decided to dress up my hair with some flowers. She spent a long time on it and she enjoyed doing that. When Grandma finished, she was so happy and I stood on a chair to look at myself in the mirror (镜子). My heart went cold.
“You can go out and play now,” Grandma said, smiling.
I nodded and slowly walked towards the door. I looked out of the small window in the door and saw some kids playing outside. My best friend, Liu Mei, saw me and waved (挥手) at me to go outside, but I couldn’t move. I knew everyone would laugh at my hair, but I couldn’t tell Grandma how I felt.
Finally, I went into Grandma’s room and said in a scared voice, “Grandma, I don’t think the flowers in my hair look nice.”
Grandma looked sad, but didn’t say a word. She stood me back on the chair in front of the mirror. While Grandma was pulling out the flowers gently (轻柔地). I realised she loved me so deeply that she put my feelings before hers. And that is the kind of love I try to pass on today.

One day Peter told Bill, “I’d like to give a party on Saturday, I’d like you to come and bring Martha, too.” “Thanks, Peter. China’s 15-year-old Chen Ye won gold in the men’s park final of skateboarding at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou on Sept.25.
Chen started getting into this sport in 2016. “I remember one day I went to a sports store, and by chance, I saw a skate board. I decided to give it a try,” Chen said to China Youth Daily. Although it was really challenging (挑战) to stay on the board at first, Chen found it very interesting. “Every time I did some difficult moves, I felt the joy of making progress,” said Chen. Slowly, Chen needed a better skate park for training. To meet this need, his father decided to make a skate bowl himself. “He would work on it late into the night, sometimes until three or four in the morning,” said Chen. “I'm really thankful for my father’s support.”

His only “privilege (特权)” was not having to take PE classes, so he could use that time to do his schoolwork. After school he needed to practice skateboarding for hours in his own skate bowl. He trained in the morning, studied in the afternoon and sometimes had to have special classes with the teachers’ help. While getting ready for the match this year, Chen even disagreed with his father over his study plan. He wanted to train for more hours at night to avoid influencing with daytime classes.

Since it came out in 1908, Anne of Green Gables (《绿山墙的安妮》) has been a favorite book of teenagers all over the world. What it teaches us is simple: How to grow up to be a happy and useful person.
Anne is an 11-year old orphan (孤儿) who arrives in the town of Avonlea, Canada. She helps Mathew and Marilla Cuthbert, a brother and sister, on their farm.
At first, Mathew and Marilla hope to adopt (收养) a boy, not a thin girl. Will she be of any use on the farm? It seems unlikely: Anne is very imaginative, talkative and easily distracted. That’s not what is needed on farm.
And yet, Anne proves that she can actually be useful. She works really hard. But she doesn’t lose her powerful sense of fun—and this is why readers love the story. She doesn’t become “a good girl”, if “good girl” means knowing only how to work and live unhappily. We see Anne’s love for life everywhere. She knows how to enjoy herself, whether it’s by eating ice cream or trying on a new dress.
Many stories for children are written to tell them how to behave well. Usually it means doing one’s duty and not having any fun. But that’s not the kind of story Canadian writer Lucy Maud Montgomery wanted to tell. The book gives readers a helping hand rather than trying to scare them into being “good” girls and boys.

A.证明 | B.推断 | C.想象 |
A.By acting like a good girl. |
B.By becoming another Cinderella. |
C.By having fun and getting the job done. |
A.Because it tells us what a good kid should be truly like. |
B.Because it educates us to work hard to be a useful person. |
C.Because it helps us know how to behave well when we grow up. |
