The Sahara is the largest desert in the world. It has one of the most terrible environments on the earth. It covers an area of about 600, 000 square kilometers. This is nearly the whole size of the United States.
The huge desert spans(横跨)11 countries. So it has many different land features(地貌特征). The most famous and beautiful one is the golden sand dune fields(沙丘地). Other land features include mountains, plateaus(高原)and so on. Some of the mountains have snow in winter. Thousands of years ago, the Sahara was not a desert at all. There were many plants and rivers. As the weather changed, it became hot and dry. Although the natural conditions are terrible, there are many plants and animals like snakes, foxes and birds living there. In some places, people grow fruit. Plants can grow there because their roots(根)can reach deep underground to get water.
More than 2,000,000 people live in the Sahara. Some of them move around from place to place with their camels. Others live in towns and cities. Camels are known as the “ships of the desert”. They can travel more than a week without water or food in the desert.
The desert is not always hot. The temperature changes a lot in a day in the Sahara. And the sunshine is strong there. So people have to prepare well if they plan to visit it.

“Transitioning (转变) from high school to university proves to be a challenge for many first-year students,” says Professor John Tyler Binfet of UBC. “Since students who experience homesickness are more likely than their non-homesick schoolmates to drop out of university, universities should support students during their first year.”
In the study, 44 first-year university students who were homesick were given a survey to measure levels of homesickness, satisfaction with life and connectedness (关联) with campus. Half of the students completed eight weeks of dog therapy, while the other half were told to take the therapy eight weeks later. Dog therapy included 45-minute weekly gatherings, like group activities with the dogs and their trainers, and meeting other first-year students participating (参与) in the study. After eight weeks, participants in both the treatment group and the non-treatment group completed the survey again.
Participants who completed the eight-week program were less homesick and more satisfied with school life. They reported that during the therapy they felt like they were at home talking with friends who brought their dogs. However, the non-treatment group reported an increase in their feelings of homesickness.
“Moving to a new city, I did not know anyone at the university and became very homesick,” said Varenka Kim, a student who took part in the eight-week therapy. “I stayed in my room and didn’t feel like I belonged here. Having dog therapy every Friday gave me a sense of purpose and I stayed positive about life.”
According to a 2009 study, 29 percent of students who dropped out of school believed that more communication and friendships with other students would have influenced their decision to stay longer.
“While further study is needed, a university’s ability to influence campus connections could be a useful tool in lowering drop-out rates in first-year students,” says Binfet. “Many first-year university students face the challenge of fitting into their new campus community,” he says. “Homesick students are three times more likely than those who manage their homesickness to drop out of university.”

My favorite area in Britain is a country called Northumberland in the north-east of the country. I like it because it has mountains, the sea and history. The mountains are not very high. In China you would probably call them hills rather than mountains as they are less than 1,000 meters high, but there is something wild about these mountains you get a feeling of space and freedom. You can walk for miles without meeting another person.
Northumberland is full of history. There are seven castles, some of them were ruined and the others still there as they were centuries ago. You can find graves going back to prehistoric(史前的), times and strange carvings on rocks which nobody understands. The coast line is dramatic too, with beautiful sandy beaches. These beaches are rarely crowded because the weather is unpredictable and the North Sea is very cold! People don’t go for seaside holidays to Northumberland because of the cold sea and weather, so even in high season there aren’t many tourists.
There is an island called Holy Island off the coast of Northumberland, you can get to the island by car or on foot when the tide is out. There is also one castle I particularly like. It is a 14th century castle which stands on a cliff right by the sea. The castle is almost completely ruined, but it looks dramatic and romantic because you can still see the gate and two of its owners. On a summer’s day you can lie on the beach nearby and let your mind wander as you look at this dream-like castle. On a winter’s day you can walk to the castle and watch the waves crash into the cliff, wondering how this castle has stood so long against the forces of nature.
I once said to a friend of mine that I thought this castle by the sea was the most beautiful place in the world. She laughed and said there must be many more dramatic places in the world. In one way, I’m sure she’s right, but for me, it’s not just about what a place looks like, it’s about what it says to you.

Natural scenes often become the themes of poetry. Poets watch nature closely and present(呈现) its beauty in their poems. For example, poets may describe natural scenes such as a spring day or a snowy day. Besides, poets often express their feelings about nature by creating lively images(形象) in poems. With images, poets can describe the details(细节) of something colorfully. Readers, on the other hand, can connect their own experiences with the images in the poems so that they can share the poets’ ideas. Now let’s read the poem “Who Has Seen the Wind?”
When we read the lines “When the leaves hang trembling” and “When the trees bow down their heads,” they remind us of a windy day. The poet successfully creates an image of the wind by describing details of the scene. These help the readers think of the moment when the wind passes by. We might even bow our own heads, imagining that we are the trees.
In the poem “Night”, Blake describes many details of a night scene. People know very well what they can see at night, like stars or the moon. However, Blake sees more than just the moon itself; he sees the moon as a flower, smiling at us from up in the sky. So the moon is really compared to a flower and personified(拟人化) as a smiling person.

You may have heard the saying “The Yangtze River is China’s mother river.” The main route of the Yangtze is almost 6,400 km long. As the world’s third-longest river, its valley(流域)covers one-fifth of China’s land area. The Yangtze River Economic Zone covers 11 provinces and cities, making up about 40 percent of China’s total population and GDP.
On Dec 26, China’s top legislature(立法机关)passed the Yangtze River Protection Law, which will work on March 1, 2021. It is the first law to protect a waterway in China, CGTN noted.
The “mother river” is in great need of protection because something is wrong with it. For example, the river’s Chinese paddlefish(白鲟)has died out after surviving for 150 million years because of overfishing and water pollution. There’re also desertified(荒漠化的) land and soil pollution near the upstream part of the river in Qinghai province, Xinhua reported.
The Yangtze River Protection Law includes bans(禁止)on activities that could have terrible influence on the river. It also includes heavier punishments for those who don’t follow the law.
According to the law, fishing will be banned in all of the Yangtze’s natural waterways, including its major tributaries(支流)and lakes. Those who are caught fishing will be fined 50,000 to 500,000 yuan.
Sand mining(采沙)will be strictly limited in the river valley. Many companies are mining sand along the river, as sand is a rare resource. However, this has led to lower water levels on the river, which has caused the river’s water quality to become worse.
Companies operating along the river will turn to green development. Companies that produce dangerous chemicals will move out, the law says.

For more than two months, you can’t see the sun, even at noon. In summer, days are long. For more than two months, the sun never goes down and there is no night at all.
The temperature is very low near the North Pole. In summer the temperature is below 0℃, such as -3℃, so people there have to wear warm clothes all year round. They make their clothes from the fur(皮毛)of animals, such as coats, and hats.
Life near the North Pole is very different. Because of the cold weather and the longtime of darkness, plants cannot grow there. Such weather is also unfriendly for most animals. And people there have to build their houses with fur, earth, stone or snow. You may think that snow houses must be cold. In fact, they are very warm inside and safe.
When people go out to catch or kill animals, they live in tents-something we can sleep in. When they move, they take their tents with them.

The Antarctic is the most southern part of the earth and it is the area around the South Pole. Both of the places have a lot in common, but they are also different in many ways.
WeatherBoth places are very, very cold. Both of them are covered with ice. Much of the ice there never melts (融化). You may be surprised to know there are not many snowstorms in either place. Small pieces of ice blow around and look like falling snow.
What is under the ice?On every big difference is what is under the ice. Water is under most of the ice in the Arctic. Land is under most of the ice in the Antarctic. The Antarctic is a large continent (大陆). It has plains (平原), valleys and mountains. They are covered with ice.
PlantsThe Arctic is warmer than the Antarctic. Small plants grow on the Arctic in summer. The Antarctic has almost no plants, because it is too cold. A few small plants grow there each summer.
AnimalsAnimals live in both places. Polar bears live in the Artic. Same foxes and wolves live there, too. Most animals can’t live in the Antarctic because it is too cold. However penguins (企鹅) can live there. There are some animals that can live in both places, such as whales.
PeopleMany people live in the Arctic. There are towns and small cities on the land areas. The Antarctic is so cold that nobody lives there for long. Scientists who study the Antarctic stay there while they are working. They live in special buildings and don’t spend much time outside.

Make a card about the size of a postcard and write two English letters "L" and "R" on it. "L" is on the left and "R" on the right. First, hold the card about 80 cm away and you can see both the letters. Then close your right eye and look at the letter "R" only with your left eye. And now, as you move the card slowly towards you, you'll find the letter "L" disappearing. But if you move the card nearer to your face, the letter will be seen again. Now do the same experiment with your left eye closed; you'll find the letter "R" disappearing.
Why do the letters disappear? It is because there is a blind spot in the eye. When the image (影像) of the letter falls on the blind spot, it won’t be seen. That’s why one of the letters disappears.

With Geoffrey, we do not need to keep delivery humans waiting for the food to be ready or restaurant humans watching their food get cold when the driver has not shown up—two big problems in food delivery industry. Tiny Mile now uses it to provide local food service in a small area. It can work for eight hours each time.
The manager Omar Elawi says, “Right now, the delivery robots are mostly controlled by young people with a history of gaming, who are comfortable navigating the streets on a screen with a joystick. But we are trying to push the idea of jobs for disabled people who could work from home.”
But some people doubt whether the delivery robots can work normally when they meet someone who tries to turn them over or bad weather. But Elawi says, “I here have been no real problems. A couple of kids were throwing snowballs. Many people would actually help when it got stuck in the snow.” Soon it will even have a speaker so that the driver can say thanks for the help.
Another different thing about the delivery robots is that Geoffrey drivers are paid a salary, unlike usual delivery robots which just take jobs away from delivery people. Founder Tartavull says, “Geoffrey is not here to take away jobs, but eventually creates more with higher pay.” It will also be more environmentally friendly. “A few years from now it is going to sound silly and unreasonable that we use a car to carry apple pie,” he adds.
